3.4 x 2.9 x 0.2 cm. These reticulated rutiles are like nothing else in the mineral kingdom, with their geometric crosshatched crystal form. Rutile of course takes on all sorts of forms, from the chunky crystals from Graves Mountain to the golden, needle-like crystals from Novo Horizonte you see associated with hematite or sometimes even inside of quartz crystals. This form has to be the most interesting of all, however.
5.0 x 3.8 x 2.7 cm. "Sagenitic" quartz is a familiar name for quartz included with acicular rutile, though in this case, the rutile is in the form of these weird elongated strings and sheets of triangular crystals, rather than truly acicular ("hair-like"). At any rate, what you have here is a rare Japanese specimen of this phenomenon. The faces have been polished, as the original crystal may have been coated or damaged and not given a clear window to the fascinating inclusions. This is an old-timer! Ex. Richard Hauck collection.
2.8 x 1.9 x 1.5 cm. A clear crystal of quartz in a bed of smaller crystals, shot through with glittering golden, acicular crystals of rutile.
5.2 x 4.4 x 2.9 cm. A strange and pretty mineral specimen out of the Sussman Collection, which is notable for its fine Namibian suite of minerals. This is a pseudomorph of limonite after a compound crystal of razor-sharp siderite, showing staggered rhombohedral forms. On the front face, you can see slender crystals of red rutile embedded in the face of the crystal! The specimen is actually light in the hand, as it is basically the same as rust chemically - though a whole lot prettier and obviously a significant and unusual enough specimen for the Sussmans to have in their collection. Sharpest crystal seen in a pocket they bought about 4 years ago.
3.4 x 2.4 x 1.8 cm. This sharp, gemmy and lustrous quartz crystal is shot through with glittering, golden needles of acicular rutile. Ex. Hauck Collection.
4.8 x 3.7 x 1.9 cm. Gemmy, deep wine-red rutile crystals epitaxial and aesthetically scattered on thick, lustrous, gray hematite blades on this very well-formed CLASSIC from the famed Binn Valley of Switzerland. This very showy and excellent, two-sided specimen is certainly dominated by the beautiful, large, 1.2 cm rutile crystal on one side. Ex. Dr. Gary Hansen Collection and not seen since the early 1980s.
6.7 x 5.2 x 4.2 cm. A large quartz point, transparent and with sharp faces, that is richly shot through with sparkling, golden acicular crystals of rutile. This is classic material from Brazil. Superb quality single point, all natural faces without polishing being applied.
6 x 3 x 0.3 cm. These absolutely stunning rutile crystals are nearly 6 cm in length, and shooting straight up from a platy hematite at the bottom.
7.9 x 4.4 x 3.7 cm. Despite a natural contact and some minor edge-wear (one tip is dinged), this is a REALLY impressive example of a clear quartz crystal shot through with shimmering, golden acicular crystals of rutile. They are spread liberally through the crystal, so you can see them flashing everywhere - particularly since the faces of the crystal are glassy and the interior is glassy-transparent as well. What is really cool is that this is a complete, DOUBLY-TERMINATED floater crystal - and large! Ex. Richard Hauck Collection.
5.4 x 1.9 x 1.8 cm (largest). Four gemmy quartz crystals shot through with shimmering, golden acicular crystals of rutile, from Brazil. The crystals are clear and glassy, so the view of the rutiles is wonderful.
2.8 x 1.6 x 1.5 cm. This is a large and well-developed xenotime crystal with unusually good lustre, rich chocolate color, and unusually equant crystallographic form. As a final accent, we have inclusions of golden rutile in the xenotime, included 0.1 to 1 mm below the surface.
3.0 x 1.5 x 1.2 cm. A fine xenotime crystal with multiple terminations included with rutile crystals.
3.4 x 2 x 2 cm. This is a large and well-developed xenotime crystal with unusually good lustre, rich chocolate color, and unusually equant crystallographic form. As a final accent, we have inclusions of golden rutile in the xenotime, included 0.1 to 1 mm below the surface.
5 x 4 x 4 cm. A very rare locality piece featuring a rare matrix rutile of relatively large size, for the Swiss Alps. The crystal is 1.7 cm, and is sharply twinned. Ex. Eric Asselborn Collection.
4.5 x 3 x 3 cm. A fine and extremely rare locality piece for this species. Ex. Eric Asselborn Collection.
