This specimen hosts a 2 x 2 x 1.6 cm crystal, perched in isolation atop a natural pedestal of matrix. Well excavated, it displays beautifully. As with most of these, there are a few very minor bits of edge wear but nothing too distracting on the display face. It is complete except for a small portion of one bottom-facing edge only. Collected in the Sierra Mountains in about 1965 by a well-known field collector named Bob Raduenz, who to this day refuses to divulge the exact locality but has also failed to find more there. These are clearly distinct from the Champion Mine rutiles from Mono county in appearance, and in chemical composition as per the Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy report shown for this update (with Niobium running nearly 25% by weight).

This specimen hosts a complex 4.5 x 3.5 x 2.5 cm crystal, perched atop a natural pedestal of matrix. Well excavated, it displays beautifully. The long face of the crystal actually runs down the right-back side as shown, so that you can see more of the complex faces atop from the display angle, to my eye. As with most of these, there are a few very minor bits of edge wear but nothing too distracting. It is essentially complete even on the backside. This is the largest crystal I know of from this mystery deposit, the largest I have obtained from the source, and was in fact mounted for display in the past on an oldfashioned styrofoam base for exhibition by him.

This is my favorite piece in the lot, a 3 x 2.25 x 1.25 cm TWINNED crystal perched in isolation atop a natural pedestal of matrix. Well excavated, it displays beautifully. It is complete all around, even on the backside!

This specimen hosts a 2.5 x 2.2 x 2 cm crystal, perched in isolation atop a natural pedestal of matrix. Well excavated, it displays beautifully. As with most of these, there are a few very minor bits of edge wear but also this has two serious spots of damage to the top face and the left side, or it would cost a lot more. Still, it looks good from the front.

This specimen hosts an approx. 2.5 x 2 x 2 cm complexly terminated crystal atop a natural pedestal of matrix. Well excavated, it displays beautifully. As with most of these, there are a few very minor bits of edge wear but nothing too distracting on the display face. It is complete all around, as well. Collected in the Sierra Mountains about 1965 by a well-known field collector named Bob Raduenz, who to this day refuses to divulge the exact locality but has also failed to find more there. This is a huge crystal for the find, in fact one of the biggest! Tragically, it has some damage on several edges, and a sliver of the front seems to have been chipped off in collecting, and later repaired (with some gap). So it is a big crysatl, and worthy for research purposes, but not really a colelctor level specimen in the aesthetic sense i fear .

This is an approximately 1-inch, 3-dimensional, lustrous, super-sharp rutile crystal perched on matrix! It is a real prize for the size, because of the crystal quality and its balance on matrix. These came out in the late 90s in one small batch, and seem to have gone the way of the dodo since. Haven't seen one this nice in awhile.

An unusually large, very significant rutile crystal from the old Champion Mine, in the mountains of Northern California. The crystal has minor edge wear on a few edges, and is contacted in back, but nevertheless displays magnificently and is both large and extremely well colored for this locality. It is a major specimen, comparable only to a few others I know of from the place. Old material, seldom seen today. From the Larry Conklin collection

Undoubtedly an old specimen, this piece is typical of a size and style said to be found here in the very early days, late 1800s to early 1900s. I have seen only a very few rutile specimens even approaching this size (in the Smithsonian and American Museums), and its degree of preservation and perfection is shocking (it is pristine and complete all around!). I have seen no brookite of this size, period, from here. This is a kind of pseudomorph replacement called a paramorph, now. It is no longer a brookite despite its apparent habit: A paramorph (also called allomorph) is a mineral changed on the molecular level. The mineral looks identical to the original unaltered form of the brookite (which is normally orthorhombic and not as heavy or robust as rutile) but is now replaced by another form of natural titanium oxide, (tetragonal) rutile . This is, I think, a MAJOR US locality specimen and a major rutile by any worldwide standard

Well-defined and extremely lustrous on both sides, this is a lovely blade of hematite with classic form for the locality. Lustre is super! The natural contact on the left edge does not detract at all (and points back anyhow), and the red rutiles add to the overall aesthetics. A very showy thumb!

Although now almost impossible to find on the market, there were at one time a number of these available in the mid-1990s, mined by the crew of a colorful ex-KGB colonel-turned-mineral-dealer. I have not had a good one back in years. This was a fine, very highly rated miniature which i sold back in the late 1990s and got back recently. It features a crystal of 3 cm across, perched smartly atop crystallized quartz matrix. The association, and the quality of these lustrous rutiles, made them instantly wanted by the top collectors at the time. And none were found since, seemingly. This crystal is doubly-terminated and complete all around save only a shallow contact groove in the upper-rear side, not seen from the display face in any case. Joe Budd photos

Rutile is usually only seen as inclusions in other gems like Quartz, and is rarely found in crystals that are suitable enough to cut stones. Rutile is usually cut as a novelty, and typically faceted stones are extremely dark. With that said, this "Narrow Emerald" stone actually shows an amazingly rich blood red color when backlit, and is nearly eye clean. You really don't see much faceted Rutile on the market, so this is a unique opportunity to obtain an unusually rare gem to fill a spot in your collection. Stone with this clarity and rich color are rarely seen, so don't miss out on this one.

These absolutely stunning rutile crystals are nearly 6 cm in length, and shooting straight up from a platy hematite at the bottom – one of the more aesthetic specimens from this find I have seen. These are often sort of clunky, with jumbles of hematite and smaller rutiles. Specimens with good aesthetics are generally small ones. This one has size AND perfection! And it is robust enough, it can even be shipped. It is a mesmerizing thing in a case, looking manmade, not natural.

This is a killer miniature rutile ! FEW are found so sharply twinned, and this is as sharp and as lustrous as you can get. The faces are so reflective you could shave in them. The bevelled edges, also. The piece has a slight red sheen to it, that when strongly lit is obviously more apparent (rightmost photo) although not how it looks in a normal case with normal llighting (leftmost photo)
