A superb, gem-quality Tanzanite that demonstrates the classic color change along a and b axes. It is exceedingly glassy and gemmy! The gem rough value here is considerable at $500 per carat wholesale in cutting rough - all you have to do is heat this to make it the deeper jewelry-type blue color and cut away. It should have a relatively high yield in stones from the large central zones.

Tanzanite from Merelani, Arusha District, Tanzania [db_pics/pics/nex5b.jpg]

This tanzanite crystal exhibits super clarity, and is exceptionally sharp. For a crystal of such size and gemminess, I think the price is pretty fair It weighs about 18 grams and several nice stones could easily be cut from the gemmier top half in particular. The blue color is vivid, and present on both axes which is unusual (in other words, it doesn't have tne usual blue/purple dichroism on a and b axes). With production waning in Tanzania, as of 2005 here, specimens of this quality have already become scarce.

Most collectors know about the zoisite var. tanzanite gem mines in Arusha, Tanzania but this is the first I have heard of zoisite from Baja, Mexico. The main crystal is 8.3 cm in length and is doubly terminated and apparently twinned. The crystal is lustrous and translucent with dark golden amber color. There is an impression from what was another zoisite crystal on the upper third of the main crystal, but to me this adds to its beauty.

Thulite turns out today to be known as a manganoan, pink variety of zoisite. It is still rather uncommon, and this piece has a large display face with crystalline thulite , particularly good on the right side.

THis is a whopper of a large crystal of tanzanite, showing an exceptionally sharp, steep termination and good color throughout. Uniform blue color like this indicates that, like most specimens of the material, it has been heat-treated to intensify that hue. However, this is considered par for the course for most tanzanites and is one of the few times in minerals I accept such treatment for the beauty it creates, so long as it is disclosed. The crystal is complete on front and sides, contacted only a bit on the backside. The steep termination is awesome from any angle and draws the eye. This is a giant for the price, too, considering what has been available of late (not much!).

This superb miniature is from a rare, small find of about 6 years back. It features mint-green grossular garnets ON tanzanite matrix! The garnets are good in and of themselves, and of quite high quality for the location. The combination, though, is just unique so far as i know.

A relatively large and extremely gemmy tanzie crystal at, I think, a very fair price! These are heated to get the color, but this is considered acceptable for the species. The crystal is complete all around save for a small , tiny, dign on top. Good tanzie specimens are now becoming very rare on the market as the source shifts to gem production in Tanzania itself, and rough supplies on the world market are drying up. It is almost pristine, and has a rich blue color to it that makes this material stand out in any case. 9.5 grams.

A VERY GEMMY, extremely colorful piece of this rare zoisite varietal which seems to turn up only very rarely, in small pockets, at this series of mines and pits famous for blue Tanzanite. This is an excellent piece with extremely glassy lustre, better than indicated in the pics and so brilliant that it looks polished (but is not!). Weight 86 carats!

T5G35 - Yellow Zoisite - SOLD
Merelani Mines, Arusha, Tanzania

thumbnail, 1.7 x 1 x 0.8 cm

Sorry, we have no images of this specimen at present.

A stunning, gemmy, "yellow tanzanite" crystal. It is not know why these specimens trickling out now lack the blue color component usually found in tanzies, but they sure are pretty nonetheless. 13.58 carats

A specimen of surpassing quality, with both gemminess and GEM VALUE going for it. This is a NATURAL tanzanite without having been heated to enhance the blues at the expense of the red hue. This piece is the most strongly trichroic tanzanite crystal I have ever had to offer. It glows with rich colors: blue, purple, and particularly red/maroon along the c-axis. The pictures only approximate the intensity. Moreover, it is a super-sharp, fully terminated crystal of the highest quality in terms of sharpness of form and fine termination. It has lustre like glass. this is a KILLER and of such quality that it is a miracle it was not cut for facet rough (certainly , though, it could be). This is the finest tanzanite I am aware of that is currently on the open market - I have seen 3 larger and more expensive (one heated, among them), but this is the finest in overall quality. I obtained this from Ed in a deal some time ago and he told me at the time that he had gottne this by request, upon asking Bryan Leees to find him the best possible miniature at the time (mid-1990s).

A larger miniature with very 3-dimensional form, and these nice clusters of prehnite perched upon shards of tanzanite that run underneath. Very unusual, and a good amount of prehnite for the price, from this find.

A brilliantly lustrous, intensely gemmy, "yellow tanzanite" with a unique yellow-green color that comes only rarely from these famous mines for blue tanzanite. The color on these, at their best like this one, is really more like brazilianite than any other zoisite find you might have seen. Crystals of this material tend to be very glassy and lustrous, as this one. It is complete all around and has a superb termination.
