A most unusual combination piece of matrix tanzanite, featuring two crossed crystals enveloped in a blanket of calcite. Minor diopside and graphite are also present. The tanzanite crystals measure 3.5 and 3 cm in length. One in particular is very bright and sparkly, the other darker and more intense in color. Such matrix associations are highly unusual!

This crystal is an incredibly glassy tanzanite, for lustre in the top percentile of the charts. It has a rare, straw-yellow color to it that is mesmerizing, if pastel in hue. So-called "Yellow tanzanite" in this quality is quite rare. At 31 carats (just over 6 grams) and about an inch in size, it is a perfect thumbnail, and is also complete and pristine all around.

A stunning, intensely colored crystal from a find of summer of 2010, that produced only a handful of such stunning pieces. They are noted for the intensity in "miniature size" that usually is reserved for larger crystals with a volumetric darkening of the coloration. This is a perfect, full miniature, complete all around and absolutely pristine. It has amongst the more intense red coloring on the c-axis as any I have handled in the past, and shows in a case without need for strong backlighting. Although it narrows at the tip and has less gem rough value than you might prefer, as a specimen it is really among the most showy pieces in its size class. For the miniature collector in particular, I would have to rank this as one of the best for its size in terms of overall impact!

This is an unusually elongated crystal, which really stands out in a display! At approx 31 grams (157 carats), it is large and impressive for the price. In part, the price is low because it shows no red along the c-axis as most larger tanzanites do - although, at the same time we are fairly certain it was not heat treated (which can remove that effect) to enhance the coloration. Its colors seem within the range of natural patterns, in other words, and my source claimed it was not heated. From late 2009 production, this is a large crystal at a frankly cheap price (by weight, it was listed in a lot to me at cost of $12,500 !) for a big, dramatic tanzanite that can hold its own with tourmalines in a lineup.

A GORGEOUS and to my knowledge unique thumbnail crystal, of totally gem clarity, that shows a pur epink color when lit from top or bottom. From the sides, it has a strange pink-purple mix of hues, but it really goes solid pink when well lit. I have not seen another like this, and aside from the color it is a fine thumbnail tanzanite in terms of condition and quality (complete all around, and pristine, with superb lustre). Unusual!

This is a natural tanzanite with excellent blue , purple dichroism. The lustre is superb, glassy, and top quality. It has also exceptionally well-formed faces and is complete all around, 360 degrees. This specimen, for quality of aesthetics , is hard to beat in this price and size range! Note also the gemminess...there is substantial cutting and facet rough value here. The matrix at the bottom perhaps acts to squelch the red c-axis color that might otherwise be present in natural tanzanites...for some reason that third color is not present here, but at the same time i am sure the crystal is not treated due to the shade of each hue (the purple would disappear and go blue in a treated crystal).

Zoisite, Zoisite (Var: Tanzanite) from Merelani Hills (Mererani), Lelatema Mts, Arusha Region, Tanzania [db_pics/mdpics/MD-103828a.jpg]

8.1 x 2.0 x 1.4 cm. A very showy, very blue, natural tanzanite that shows well the purple and blue dichroism inherent in the species from this locality. It is either natural in color or lightly heated to enhance the blue hue (a common practice there and considered acceptable by many collectors if price is adjusted accordingly). The purple hue is not as intense and is difficult to photograph. The crystal does have some attached matrix, of graphite. The crystal has a superb, tapered termination , most unusual for tanzanites which tend to end in more blunt chisel-shaped terminations. Ex. Ed. David Collection. Now in the Jack Halpern Collection.

5.5 x 1.8 x 1.7 cm. A LARGE, gemmy and lustrous tanzanite crystal with a gorgeous, sharp termination. As with most, they are heated to enhance the blue color. This beauty has excellent blue and purple pleochroism on the b- and c-axes, very intense and visible with any decent lighting. The crystal is contacted (not damaged, but growth-disrupted) on two sides, but this is a HIGHLY REPRESENTATIVE and large example of the species which otherwise is excellent in color and lustre. Tanzanite crystal supplies are drying up rapidly, as the Tanzania government has taken control of supply and distribution. 32 grams.

Zoisite from Ziller valley, North Tyrol, Tyrol, Austria [db_pics/mdpics/MD-154673a.jpg]

5.0 x 4.8 x 3.3 cm. A showy, old-time Austrian specimen of two, lustrous, partially gemmy, rose-red zoisite crystals nicely placed in a vug with quartz in banded gneiss from a CLASSIC locality - Zillertal. The crystals reach 3.2 cm and the terminations are contacted. This remains a highly representative specimen of the species, with uncommon coloration, from this famous locale. Ex. Harvard, Scalisi and George Elling Collections.

Corundum (Var: Ruby), Zoisite from Longido, Mt Kilimanjaro, Kilimanjaro Region, Tanzania [db_pics/mdpics/MD-159356a.jpg]

5.8 x 5.4 x 3.0 cm. You can clearly see the sharp hexagonal shape of the large maroon-colored ruby (corundum) crystal here, still encased in the surrounding green zoisite in which it crystallized. The ruby crystal measures 4.5 cm. From the collection of noted California collector Charles Hansen.

Zoisite (Var: Tanzanite) from Merelani Hills (Mererani), Lelatema Mts, Arusha Region, Tanzania [db_pics/mdpics/MD-164104a.jpg]

12 x 8 x 5 cm. This unusually large tanzanite is not just large, but is an elegant cluster as well. It is simply incredible for display impact. The cluster is heated of course, to get this uniform color (though probably not fully treated to saturation, and so it is hard to tell for sure just by looking). Out of the whole cluster, there is only one contact repair in the middle (seamless).

Zoisite, Prehnite from Trace Mine, Juarez, Mun. de Ensenada, Baja California Norte, Mexico [db_pics/mdpics/MD-170609a.jpg]

7.9 x 7.2 x 6.9 cm. An extremely rare Mexican specimen featuring sprays of zoisite crystals embedded in massive prehnite - an old specimen that even most Mexico collectors probably have not seen the likes of. The zoisite sprays, to 4 cm, have grown across a vug, and one of them is almost completely freestanding. This old-timer came out of the collection of James Manchester (1871 - 1948) through Florence Pilkington Manchester, and was obtained with other minerals from the estate by a mineral dealer about 10 years ago.

Zoisite (Var: Tanzanite), Calcite from Merelani Hills (Mererani), Lelatema Mts, Arusha Region, Tanzania [db_pics/mdpics/MD-197414a.jpg]

6.5 x 5.7 x 4.2 cm. This specimen features an approximately 6 cm crystal with natural blue-toned color, perched in calcite. Adjacent is a broken, but colorful, tanzanite crystal to the left that balances the piece nicely. The main crystal is a little rough at the termination but it is complete, just contacted. The calcite contrast is unusual and enhances the color. Very 3-dimensional, interesting specimen.

4.7 x 3.0 x 1.6 cm. This is a single sharp crystal with great gemminess. The specimen also shows the trichroic color change that is most desired (blue, purple, red colors depending on the axis of light entry).
