12.6 x 11.4 x 4.9 cm. How many CABINET-sized specimens of Jeffrey Mine vesuvianite have you ever seen? But yes, that is what you have here - a 12-cm triangular matrix completely covered with vesuvianite crystals with the coveted lavender color. They are gemmy little crystals, sparkly and lustrous, that are piled up in ridges and cluster. Large, rich specimens such as this have always been quite rare, but with the closing of the mine a few years ago, there is little from the Jeffrey Mine to be found around on the market anymore.

Grossular, Vesuvianite from Lake Jaco, Sierra de la Cruz, Mun. de Sierra Mojada, Coahuila, Mexico [db_pics/mdpics/MD-146929a.jpg]

4.9 x 4.5 x 4.2 cm. This is not only a mind-blowing huge pink garnet - it has the added distinction of having a 2 cm vesuvianite crystal embedded in one of its faces! The luster is sensational, and the color is a beautiful pink - it is actually slightly TRANSLUCENT, too! There are a few contacts, as is usual for these, but for its size it is in great condition. An old specimen. Ex. Carl Stentz collection.

7.0 x 4.6 x 4.2 cm. Sharp, lustrous and blocky, olive-green vesuvianite crystals to 2.2 cm are nicely set in massive vesuvianite matrix on this showy, OLD-TIME specimen from a CLASSIC Norway locality - Hamrefjell, Buskerud. Seldom on the market in this quality and highly representative for the species and locality. Ex. Pearse, Harvard and Elling Collections.

5.3 x 3.4 x 3.3 cm. A monster crystal of vesuvianite from Lake Jaco, known both for these and even more for grossular garnets (some of which are embedded in the faces of the crystal here). This whopper has the typical olive color, and good luster. From the collection of noted California collector Charles Hansen.

Spinel, Vesuvianite from Aldan Shield, Saha Republic (Sakha Republic; Yakutia), Eastern-Siberian Region, Russia [db_pics/mdpics/MD-160200a.jpg]

2.7 x 2.4 x 2.0 cm. This exquisite matrix miniature of a spinel crystal is complete all around and free of damage, and beautifully terminated. It has a rich "satiny" lustre, characteristic of pocket-growth crystals that have never been covered by other rock, or calcite infill which has to be removed with acid. This locality historically produced spinels of this caliber, but they came out 20 years and more ago. This new find at the same old locale has provided us a small new supply of these spinel classics. What is nice , though, is that the overall quality for this combination of size and crystal habit of spinel has not been surpassed in the meantime - they stand as important spinels, not just as interesting locality classics, in other words.

1.4 x 1.3 x 1.3 cm. A sharp thumber of vesuvianite from the classic Italian locality - two crystals that are super-lustrous and sharp as razors, with a bit of accenting matrix. Vesuvianite got its name from Mt. Vesuvius, also in Italy, where it was first found. Old Gary Hansen dealer stock.

6.4 x 3.9 x 3.6 cm. A huge, complete floater crystal of vesuvianite from Lake Jaco. There are mauve-colored garnet crystals embedded in its faces. The color is the olive hue common for these, and the faces have good luster that does not come out very well in the photo. Large and fine for this locality!

Grossular, Vesuvianite from Lake Jaco, Sierra de la Cruz, Mun. de Sierra Mojada, Coahuila, Mexico [db_pics/mdpics/MD-166778b.jpg]

4.4 x 4.4 x 4.2 cm. This is a huge crystal of vesuvianite from Lake Jaco, with the most characteristic color from there (olive yellow) and the typical blocky form. On its lustrous faces, you can see that pale grossular garnets have formed. Lake Jaco is known for both of these, but not typically together, so this is an interesting association specimen.

Pyrochlore, Vesuvianite, Phlogopite, Calcite from Oka complex, Oka, Deux-Montagnes RCM, Laurentides, Québec, Canada [db_pics/mdpics/MD-171774b.jpg]

7.0 x 5.1 x 3.5 cm. Pyrochlore is an uncommon niobium oxide, found in unusual igneous rocks, such as nepheline syenites and carbonatites, and some granitic pegmatites. The Oka area hosts a classic carbonatite complex. A pink paper arrow points to a 7 mm, sharp, lustrous and partially gemmy, reddish-brown, octahedral pyrochlore crystal jauntily perched on the edge of pearl-white strontium calcite matrix. Lustrous, olive-green vesuvianite crystals and a couple of black phlogopite mica books are a nice contrast to the matrix. Accompanied by an old John Albanese label dating from 1953-1968. Ex. George Elling Collection.
