Chrome Vesuvianite - Jeffrey Mine, Asbestos, Quebec, Canada (now closed!)

This is the loveliest Vesuvianite thumbnail that I have seen, for my tastes. The perfectly terminated crystals have a gemmy DEEP green color and superb luster that will knock your socks off in person....This is just a tremendous thumbnail, hands down. At first glance, you'd SWEAR this gem crystal must be a tsavorite garnet for the color intensity and gemminess. But, it's a humble old vesuvianite in exceptional form. These chrome-rich specimens were exceedingly rare at this now-closed locality, and I have had just a handful in 16 years of buying minerals from this mine.

One of the best miniatures I have yet laid hands on from the new finds of vesuvianite , which are nearly of the same quality as the treasured, rare, and highly expensive old Italian examples. BETTER IN PERSON, these crystals are of very high quality!

Featuring a central 2 cm crystal, doubly-terminated and wine-red, this is simply the most aesthetic and attractive miniature form the find I have seen yet. These started trickling out 2 years ago at Munich, and the flow has been pretty thin since. This piece, really, could hol dits own even with the classic Italian pieces said to be the world's best in previous centuries! The piece ALSO displays well from the other angle, with the dt crystal ATOP and the calcite serving as an accent at the base. TURST ME, its MUCH better in person and will blow you away for the quality you get for the price, compared to any previous finds of gemmyvesuvianite of this Italian alpine style.

This rich, display-sized specimen hosts a number of elongated, sharply crystallized vesuvianites to nearly 2 cm. These are classic, forest-green vesuvianite crystals from the Italian Piedmont. Nice clusters like this have tended to stay in Italy with the collectors, and we seldom see (at least in the US) anything really good. Unique compared to other locales, these are immediately recognizable classics.

NOT a Gaudefroyite ! this one fooled us at first, too! It is a SUPERB mangan-vesuvianite with deep wine-red color when backlit, so you can be sure of the ID. This specimen features xls of the highest quality and the best lustre, almost glassy in brightness - rare for the species. There is some damage to smaller crystals, but most major crystals are complete, and the display is phenomenal. The matrix is sparkling, minutely crystallized andradite garnet. The large single crystal atop is doubly-terminated and almost 2 cm long tip to tip.

An important and very fine vesuvianite from this classic locality! This specimen features fat, wine-red crystals (shown overlit in the bottom photo to be sure that is conveyed). They are glassy, translucent in the outer layers, and just plain beautiful. No damage on display face, though there is a contacted spot on the back of the top crystal and the rear of the piece. These Italian vesuvianites have long set the standard for the species as far as Europeans are concerned, and their only real competition, from the Jefrey Quarry, is of different color and crystal habit. I ahve sene much lesser pieces priced at double this price, in euros yet, on the tables at Munich.

4.4 x 4.2 x 3.0 cm. Gorgeous, very glassy and gemmy, light orange grossular garnets on matrix and nicely accented with green vesuvianite crystals from the famous and now-closed Jeffrey Mine of Quebec. The large garnet is 1.3 cm and the central crystals are undamaged, save for a trivial bruise on the large crystal. The periphery damage is certainly not detracting, as you can see. ex. Swoboda collection.
