Fabulous light gray-brown specimen that came from the famous finds of the late 70's. These crystals show the typical barrel/hopper form of Pyromorphite, and the luster on all crystal sides is excellent...except it really IS vanadinite. OK, so they come red now to be sure, but these interesting waxy brown vana's are just as classic, and much rarer. For what it is, this is a gem.

Killer miniature from the world's most famous locality for the species. The thick (up to .9 cm!) crystals have very nice orange-red color and highly desired mirror-like luster on all six sides of the crystals. OLDSTYLE, fat, lustrous crystals which are quite readily different from the more contemporary material in person.

A VERY RARE turn-of-the-century specimen of yellow vanadinite, previously thought to be an entirely different species and given the name of "endlichite," from a classic silver mining district that in its early days produced some of these things in the upper levels. Sadly , few specimens from those days remain today, at least on the open market. I have seen only 2 other specimens of this material in the past, both thumbnails. From the miniature rarities suite of Lawrence Conklin, who exchanged it from the American Museum of Natural History, where it landed with the donation of the Clarence Bement collection around 1910 by JP Morgan.

A very rare old vanadinite from one of the oldest localities for giant crystals of this species, Abenab in former Southwest Africa. This is a huge hoppered crystal, complete all around, that has a brown-red color inside. As is typical for the locality, there is a yellow-brown coating of descloizite and/or mimetite mixed in microscopic crystals, atop. Pieces of this size are VERY uncommon on the market today! It was acquired from Pala Properties by Ed Ruggiero in 1977.

Attractive, and quite unusual, this orange-red Vanadinite consisting of a series of stacked tabular crystals. The color is a fine and bright fire-like hue, and each of the crystals has very good luster and complex individual habit, almost rosettes perched upon tabular crystals. The largest is about 2.5 x 2.3 x .2 cm. Very aesthetic. AND, there is a definite weird orangey color to this piece! it is not a pure red tone as usual. FLOATER!

"Striking" is the only way to describe this incredible Vanadanite which REALLY stands out from the crowd! The main crystal is 2.7 cm across, it has superb luster, and a beautiful deep orange-red color. The tabular portion is nearly .5 cm thick. However, that is just the beginning. In reality, portions of the Vanadanite grow to a thickness of 1.2 cm! Intergrown in the back, as well as on the main face, are numerous high quality Vanadinites. Some in the back themselves reach 1 cm across and .6 cm thick - on their own they would have made a great Vanadanite specimen. Overall, this is a fantastic specimen - aesthetic, unusual, and sharp as can be. It is a FULL and imposing thumbnail. ex Sam Nasser collection

LW105 - Vanadinite - $ 450 SOLD
Western Union Mine, Mohave County, Arizona, USA
small cabinet, 6 x 4.4 x 2.3 cm
ex.  Martin Lewadny

Sorry, we have no images of this specimen at present.

Another fine Vanadinite from the Western Union Mine. These crystals mostly have a short C-axis, creating numerous and attractive equant crystals with excellent luster and a lovely orange color. The evenly dispersed Vanadinites on the black coating create a very aesthetic specimen! I admit that I had never seen material from this mine before, but here you have it! I am now told that these were not from the 60s as previously stated but rather: They were collected in 1988 by Mark Hay, Dick Morris and George Godas. See MINERALOGICAL RECORD: The Western Union Mine, Cerbat Mountains, Mohave County, Arizona (by Mark Hay) 28: 167-174

For all the world, these Vanadinites look like fine Pyromorphites, and for many years they got away with this masquerade in marketing them in the late 1960s and 1970s when they came out befor ethe red ones for which Morocco is now famous. Now we know better. These barrel-shaped crystals, up to .8 cm, have good color, excellent luster, and a nice translucence, and are superb vanas' , not pyros! This a terrific specimen, well above average for the location and style.

Beautiful cluster of lustrous doubly-terminated prisms of a most unusual habit for Vanadinite. The crystals, which range up to .8 cm in length, have a lovely rich red color and a uniform bright luster. The overall aesthetic appeal is excellent, and it is even better than the pics convey. I admit that I had never seen material from this mine before, but here you have it! Vanadinite, Psilomelane - Taouz, Er Rachidia Province, Meknès-Tafilalet Region, Morocco

24.5 x 16.6 x 9.0 cm. A very rare piece today not only for size but for overall aspect, from the early 1980s finds at Taouz which preceded major finds at Mibladen that later made people forget about these small finds out in the further desert. However, these older pieces are of a unique style with startling contrast when on this great velvety matrix, were more rare when found, more valuable when found, harder to get then and still rarer today. I have seen pictures of this forbidding locality in a slideshow by Vic Yount, recently, and let me tell you I am amazed we have ANYTHING from there. The place is near the OPEN border with Libya. It consists of a warren of natural caves accessed by dangerous un-supported shafts dug by hand. And it is in the middle of a very hot desert! I am shocked a large specimen like this survived unscathed. The velvety surface is especially prone to damage and you have to think about the care taken to get it from the mine to the market and then through 30 years of collectors hands. Charlie bought it soon after it was found at Tucson of 1984, directly from Vic Yount who handled most of them at the time. It is a dramatic display piece and happens also to be really good for what it is. This is a key piece form the Charlie Freed Collection out of Los Angeles.

12.6 x 11.2 x 6.8 cm. Tremendous specimen of the classic Vanadinites-that-look-like-Pyromorphites. The display surface is completely covered with undamaged crystals that range from a few mm up to 2 cm. The color is a tannish-grey and the luster is superb. Many of the crystals are hoppered, and many of the others have a preferential coating on the termination that mimics hoppering.

6.2 x 4.7 x 3.4 cm. These are incredibly lustrous crystals of vanadinite (to 0.8 cm), with intense red color, on the very desirable matrix of white barite. They sit up on the edges of the barite ridges, so they are really beautifully exposed. A choice specimen!

10.3 x 7.1 x 3.9 cm. A large, dazzling specimen of bright candy-red vanadinite crystals, spread richly over thick bladed barite on matrix. The crystals measure up to 0.8 cm. They contrast wonderfully with the white and black-mineralized barites.

5.3 x 4.8 x 4.3 cm. Very appealing specimen of lustrous orange-red Vanadinites resting on contrasting grey-black Goethite. The largest is .9 cm. The Vanadinites are quite gemmy, and they have the gorgeous orange-red caps on top of the gemmy portion that we have seen only in the specimens from this one lot. These Vanadinites on Goethite have become classics because of the beautiful contrast, but these with the caps are even more desirable. Very aesthetic and attractive all the way around. Ex. Steve Smale Collection.
