4.4 x 3.8 x 2.2 cm. The borate deposits of California have produced some really beautiful/unusual mineral specimens. Few are as unusual as ulexite, also called "TV rock" for its fiber-optic-like optical properties. This particular matrix specimen is features a radiating spray of discrete ulexite needles, something you almost never see in the mineral. The needles have superb lustre and a pearlescent, white to tan color. The ulexite needles are in association with some tan, translucent calcite crystals in rounded masses. Ex. Jim Minette Collection.

4.7 x 4.5 x 3.1 cm. The borate deposits of California have produced some really beautiful/unusual mineral specimens. Few are as unusual as ulexite, also called "TV rock" for its fiber-optic-like optical properties. This particular specimen is composed of white, knobby masses of parallel-growth fibers. Ex. 9 x 8.5 x 5.0 cm. This is a very fine, rich, and large example of ulexite from Peru. It is crystallized in globular clusters, and complete all around. Ex. Philadelphia Academy of Sciences Collection.

Ulexite - Boron, Kramer District, Kern Co., California, USA

This is a great example of the transparent and colorless mineral known as "TV rock" because it has optical properties like fiber-optic cable. It is transparent along the perfect vertical axis, while opaque along other axes. When polished, as this is, you can hold it over writing and witness this phenomenon. Is this a fine mineral specimen? No, not really. But it is really "neat" material and I wasn't sure those outside of California had been exposed to it. It does get sold widely to museums and rock shops, again labelled as "tv rock" or "fiber-optic rock". Fun for kids... 5.3 x 3.7 x 1.5 cm

This is a huge, solid specimen of pearlescent white, "TV rock". It actually is a whole crystal, reaching from one floor of the pocket to the top and thus with each termination bracketed by attached matrix 15 x 4 x 2.75 cm

The borate deposits of California have produced some really beautiful/oddball mineral specimens. Few are as unusual as ulexite, also called "TV rock" for its fiber-optic-like optical properties. This particular matrix specimen is TERMINATED, something you almost NEVER see in the mineral; and it has superior prismatic luster and a pearlescent, white color. In association are some really neat golden, translucent calcite crystals to 1.0 cm in length. SUPERB FOR THE SPECIES AND VERY RARE as a specimen, instead of simply as cleavage masses! This specimen is 3-dimensional and complete all around 7 x 5 x 4.8 cm

Hayesine is a discredited species name now shown to be the same as the previously described species Ulexite. This is, however, a VERY fine, rich, and large example of ulexite from Peru! It is crystallized in globular clusters, and complete all around.
