Found in the late 1800s, these were old classics even before the mines were shut down and closed. GEMMY, brilliantly purple CRYSTALS of this tremolite varietal abound in massive matrix of the same. This is a large, rich piece. You could certainly break it up into many smaller specimens with ease, each with some gemmy crystals in it. This is typical of the higher quality level I see every now and then, preserved in old collections.

This is OFF THE CHARTS (Charlie's favorite phrase for pieces he thinks have real significance!). This specimen hosts a SUPERB, 4.5-inch, translucent, lustrous crystal of hexagonite, the largest I have personally seen and far more importantly the largest that Charlie himself has seen in over 50 years of dealing fine minerals. He told me to put at least 10k on this one, and frankly it is tempting to do so but we tried to amortise things fairly for the non-Kalahari parts of his collection. This is a piece he obtained over 25 years ago, he said, and has kept ever since as part of his suite of "random and interesting American things I really liked." Found in the late 1800s, these were old classics even before the mines were shut down and closed. This is a large, showy, cabinet-sized display piece that has real significance for the state and the mineral.

2.2 x 1.2 x 0.6 cm. A terminated gem crystal of tremolite from Madagascar - rather rough on the surface but absolutely gemmy, with fine bottle-green color, through the interior.

[Originally uploaded as diopside. An identical crystal has been analyzed by RRUFF (RRUFF Id. Tremolite X050169) by Raman spectroscope and was found to be a tremolite]

12.4 x 8.5 x 6.9 cm. An old-time, showy CABINET specimen of solid, radiating clusters of pearlescent, grayish-white, acicular amphibole variety tremolite crystals from Switzerland. Classic and historic material from the Tremola Valley of the St. Gotthard Massif and the Harvard and George Elling Collections.

2.7 x 1.3 x 0.6 cm. A STUNNING, GEMMY and lustrous magenta tremolite variety hexagonite crystal from a CLASSIC locality - Fowler, New York. Hexagonite is the manganoan variety of tremolite and is VERY RARE in this quality. The crystal has an unusual, etched termination. Hexagonite is a VERY RARE tremolite varietal, found in only a few localities in New York. Ex. Dick Jones Collection. 14.74 carats or nearly 3 grams.

13.8 x 13.8 x 6.5 cm. This is a RARE and INCREDIBLY large and rich specimen of hexagonite out of the Elling Collection. Hexagonite is a monoclinic variety of the also rarely crystallized (but otherwise common) mineral tremolite. This variety gets its purple-red color from manganese content. It is known ONLY from two counties in New York State and nowhere else, in this quality and coloration. This large matrix is MOSTLY made up of hexagonite with a few sharp crystals mixed in - no doubt if you slivered it or cleaved it, you could make a few dozen specimens. You just do not see these around; and it’s pretty and historic as well.

Quartz, Tremolite - http://www.palagems.com/mineral_news_2008_v2.htm.

4.4 x 2.7 x 2.0 cm. This is an extremely rare doubly terminated quartz crystal with light brown tremolite (asbestos) inclusions from a unique 1956 find at the famous Crystal Peak quartz locality in La Paz County, Arizona. Faint fibers to about 1.0 cm are visible with strong backlighting within the very showy pair of lustrous, translucent, quartz crystals. The terminations at either end are very distinctively different. An ultimate Arizona rarity I first learned about seeing a famous old piece from the John Sinkankas Collection, that was similar, years ago. You can read more about this unique find at Bill Larsons Pala Gems website link: http://www.palagems.com/mineral_news_2008_v2.htm.

14.5 x 7.0 x 4.5 cm. Lustrous, white tremolite blades richly invest the striking elongate vug and are also part of the serpentine matrix on this excellent cabinet specimen from a classic Austrian locale - Totenkopf Mt. The tremolite and serpentine column is a highlight. There are vugs of tremolite on both sides of this seldom available material from the Rolf Wein Collection, a noted Alpine collector. The piece dates to 1979 and his number is 8452.

17.0 x 9.9 x 6.5 cm. Hexagonite is the very rare manganoan variety of tremolite and is distinguished by its lilac to purple color. It is only found in two counties in New York. Hexagonite was supposedly a hexagonal form of tremolite, but was shown to be monoclinic. That being said, this is an incredibly huge, 10.8 cm long, gemmy and lustrous, lilac hexagonite crystal in a solid large cabinet matrix of smaller hexagonite crystals and needles. There is an impression on the back side, where another fairly large crystal once rested.

7.0 x 3.0 x 1.6 cm. A rare and unusual, not too ugly pseudomorph from Madagascar. Moderately lustrous, ta, tremolite has pseudomorphed a complete-all-around, sharp wollastonite crystal. A very uncommon pseudomorph of the species and locale. We have not seen others.
