A super specimen with gem crystals, on matrix, from a surprising and small find of late 2005. These are the best seen in 20 years, of this rare gem species related to ettringite and sturmanite. And, they happen to be gorgeous! In person, there is more lustre. I was able to get some of the cherrypick of the lot, when they were found, and all of these were selected for best quality gemminess and lustre, as well as aesthetics.

8.4 x 7.2 x 5.4 cm. This is a beautiful Virginia old-timer, a knob of translucent sea-foam-green prehnite in association with thaumasite, not an unusual association from this locality. The crystallization is fine all the way around. Ex. Richard Hauck Collection.

1.4 x 0.9 x 0.7 cm. Thaumasite is a rare member of the ettringite group, seen in its best gemmy crystals from the N’Chwaning Mine - where this thumbnail is from. This little crystal is doubly-terminated, with a cluster of little sidecar crystals sticking off the side.

Thaumasite from N'Chwaning Mines, Kuruman, Kalahari manganese fields, Northern Cape Province, South Africa [db_pics/mdpics/MD-196771a.jpg]

1.2 x 0.3 x 0.3 cm. From the Kalahari Manganese Fields, a very rare gem crystal of thaumasite -- a strange mineral with an extremely unusual chemical composition: Ca3Si(CO3)(SO4)(OH )6•12(H2O). In fact, the name is derived from the Greek thaumasion, which means "surprising". It is sometimes classified as a silicate due to its silicon content, but there is an argument to be made for its classification as a carbonate as well. However it does belong to a predominantly sulfate mineral group, the Ettringite Group, and its properties seem more in line with its inclusion into the sulfate class. It is quite rare in gem crystals, and they are inevitably small, as this one is. This is a complete, very gemmy crystal, finely terminated, with a little sidecar crystal.

6.5 x 4.5 x 3.4 cm. Sparkling, pastel-yellow, gemmy thaumasite crystals to 9 mm completely cover front and particularly the crest of this nicely shaped matrix. This is a very fine and rich specimen from the find. They actually came out labeled as ettringites, but it has now been shown they are the much rarer member of that series. Ex. Rob Smith Collection.

4.2 x 3.1 x 1.2 cm. An excellent plate of gemmy hexagonal Thaumasite crystals on matrix. The prismatic crystals average .5-.6 cm in length and they generously cover the matrix. This rare gem species is related to Ettringite and Sturmanite. Very aesthetic - good overall quality, gemminess and luster. Ex. Charlie Key.
