ex. Phil Scalisi
Chains of sylvanite crystals showing a classic form, and bright silver colors, are richly embedded I this extremely large matrix specimen from the classic locality for the species. The piece probably dates back hundreds of years, though no label survives. It is extremely rare to find such a large piece, and this one is actually not unattractive due to its rich coverage
5.2 x 3.5 x 2.5 cm. LARGE, lustrous, platy, metallic-gray sylvanite crystals to 7 mm richly cover quartz-rich matrix on this showy and excellent old-timer from the famous Cripple Creek District of Colorado. Sylvanite is an uncommon gold, silver telluride and this is a good one from this well-known locality which produced mostly in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Specimens with any display quality such as this one, and with good crystals as well, are hard to come by. Accompanied by an older label from the Bradleys, East Coast mineral dealers.
4.8 x 3.5 x 3.1 cm. A RICH, old-time and showy combination specimen from the famed Cripple Creek District of Colorado of metallic-bright, platy sylvanite crystals to 4 mm richly scattered on all four sides of matrix and very well complimented by purple fluorite. Sylvanite and fluorite are an UNCOMMON and HIGHLY DESIRABLE combination from this well-known district and this is a very highly representative specimen. Sylvanite is a rare silver, gold telluride and Cripple Creek produced about the best, mostly over 100 years ago. Ex. Charles Hansen Collection.
13.7 x 8.6 x 3.4 cm. A very massive specimen rich with embedded Sylvanite crystals. Freestanding crystals are present to several mm, and several larger, flat crystals to 5 mm are present, all around one end of the piece. Ex. Rice Northwest Museum Collection.
11.1 x 7.6 x 3.7 cm. This is a very rich and attractive specimen of sylvanite with good size, coverage, and excellent crystals for this, the type locality.
13.1 x 7.5 x 6.4 cm. A large matrix specimen with a front display area showing brilliantly metallic elongated crystals of sylvanite, on white quartz. Typical for the locality. Ex. Philadelphia Academy of Sciences Collection.
This specimen is LOADED with the rare silver-gold-telluride sylvanite, much of it in the form of flat, bright crystals as well as rich seams! The bright veins run all through the matrix, both back and front. A really rich specimen of a much sought-after mineral! 6.7 x 4.8 x 3.2 cm
7.5 x 5.2 x 3.7 cm. Sylvanite, the rare silver and gold telluride, was discovered here at the type locality in 1835. It is known at its best for this surreal, metallic-organic growth that seems to have pattern, when crystallized at we see here. More technically speaking, these are flat-lying crystals in the form of typical graphic intergrowths ("Schrifterz"). The effect is bizarre, and beautiful. Good hand-sized specimens from this type locality, most surely dating to the mid 1800s or before, are extremely rare. Ex. Dr. Werner Paar Collection.
9.5 x 4.5 x 4.0 cm. A fine, 2.7 cm, dendritic aggregate of flattened sylvanite crystals set on contrasting calcite. This old-time specimen, certainly dating to the 19th Century, is from one of the historic, gold-mining districts of Romania - Offenbanya. Ex. Mullane Collection.
5.4 x 5.2 x 2.8 cm. Nagyagite specimens from the famous Type Locality of Nagyag (now called Sacarimb), Romania are quite rare. The splendent, laminar crystals in this one are of considerable size and well defined for the species, up to 2.6 cm. This outstanding, two-sided, combination specimen also has long, dendritic, hair-like crystals of sylvanite to 1.9 cm on one side and matte-black sphalerite crystals on both sides. This excellent and classic, old-time piece probably dates to the 1800s, but no proof. Ex. Eric Asselborn Collection.
5.3 x 4.1 x 2.6 cm. This well-trimmed matrix features a 2-cm-long crystal of sylvanite. Sylvanite is a very rare silver gold telluride. Large crystals are only known from a few locales, of which the most historic are in the now defunct old mining districts of Romania and in Colorado. Seldom do you see such large crystals, in particular from Colorado. This crystal measures 20 mm in size, and is superbly displayed on a well-trimmed matrix. Minor microscopic purple fluorite is in association. This is a major specimen for the species and locale, far more impactful and important than its physical size would indicate otherwise. From an old collection.
2.3 x 1.7 x 0.8 cm. This is a rare gold, silver telluride from Cripple Creek. It is embedded in massive quartz and features many mm size crystals which emit a bright metallic luster and silvery color. Extremely rich. Ex. Marilyn Dodge Collection.
4.0 x 3.3 x 2.3 cm. A good representative specimen of the rare Gold Silver Telluride Sylvanite. This piece hosts several small, sharp, highly lustrous, whitish-gold colored, striated, metallic, monoclinic blades on Quartz matrix. The crystals are small (approximately 1-2 mm), but this species is rarely seen for sale on the open market, and is one of the most highly sought after species from this historic Gold mining district. Ex. Richard Kosnar Collection.
7.6 x 6.0 x 4.1 cm. Lustrous, dendritic aggregates of flattened, golden-silvery sylvanite crystals richly cover the dense matrix coated with contrasting calcite. This old-time specimen is from the historic gold-mining district of Offenbanya, Romania, the Type Locality for sylvanite. An old paper label in German attached to the piece has an 1854 date on it. This is only 19 years after sylvanite was discovered at Offenbanya. Certainly, one of the larger and richer sylvanites you will see from this historic locale. The label is a bonus.
4.1 x 3.8 x 2.4 cm. A classic and certainly rare matrix wire gold specimen from one of the northern most mining districts of the Colorado Mineral Belt. This particular specimen was collected by Russ McClellen in 1961, and was part of Rich Kosnar's Colorado Gold suite (specimen number G571B) for over 30 years. The piece features several small, stout, heavily striated "wires" of Gold which are associated with razor sharp, highly lustrous pyritohedral Pyrite crystals, and many bright metallic white, bladed crystals of the telluride, Sylvanite with Quartz on matrix. A great historic, documented Gold specimen from this famous district in Colorado.
