This complete-all-around specimen of lemon-yellow sulfur crystals is from one of the classic locales, and hard to obtain today. Note the nice old label from the collection of Lord Calvert! You can see more information on him here
BEM-24 - Sulfur - $ 850 Assoro, Val Guarnera, Sicily, Italy miniature, 3.7 x 2.5 x 2.1 cm
A complete-alla-around, gorgeous miniature sulfur crystal from a classic old loclaity. It has the most intense yellow color and a very nice sculptural appeal to the aesthetics, with that gemmy 3.5-cm doubly-terminated crystal hanging off the end so nicely for display! Comes with 2 old labels from Colombia College in NY and an older label from the 1800s, in antique French.
CAR-105 - Sulfur on Aragonite - $ 1800 SOLD Girgenti, Sicily, Italy cabinet, 17.8 x 13.7 x 6.0 cm ex. Andrew Carnegie
A very colorful and showy plate of bright lemon-yellow sulfur crystals, on matrix! Though there is some damage here and there, it is minor in context and does not detract much at all. The piece looks good from EITHER side, depending on personal tastes! For some reason his number on the specimen is blacked over, on the actual piece, so we had to guess at the real catalogue number. We think this is because it was erroneously labeled as #105 "Nicholsonite on Aragonite from Tsumeb" at one time (this number survives under the second coat of black paint on which he wrote his numbers on many pieces) and was perhaps recatalogued under another number that came off in the cleaning. Regardless, it is prominently seen in the photo of the lefthand case, in the middle of the second shelf up. You can see which side Carnegie liked!
D05-37 - Sulfur - $ 150 SOLD Napa, Potosi Department, Bolivia thumbnail, 2.8 x 2.2 x 1.9 cm ex. Sam Nasser
Superb, sharp, colorful crystal...this is of unusual size for the locality, and is razor sharp!
ES104 - Sulfur on Aragonite - $ 750 SOLD Agrigento, Sicily, Italy cabinet, 14.5 x 14.2 x 4.2 cm ex. Ernie Schlichter
A matrix of lustrous, white, twinned, doubly terminated aragonite crystals to 3 cm across, forms the backdrop for lemon yellow, flat lying, sulfur crystals which occur in the interstices between the aragonite crystals. This combination of colors gives this old specimen an interesting look. Note that this is the original aragonite here! IN MOST CASES with this association form this mine, the original aragonite has been replaced by alteration and is now calcite. Sulfur on this natrual aragonite is quite rare, in fact. This beautiful piece is the largest such I have seen for sale. BETTER IN PERSON!
ES47 - Aragonite and Sulfur - $ 450 SOLD Girgenti Mine, Sicily, Italy small cabinet, 9.6 x 9.4 x 3.6 cm ex. Ernie Schlichter
From a deposit long since closed, I think this is an outstanding aragonite from a classic find of the early 1970s. On a crust of massive aragonite with minor sulfur are numerous colorless, twinned, lustrous, gemmy aragonite crystals up to 2.5 cm in length. The basal pinacoids (flat faces atop) are gemmier than the prism faces which can be opaque and chalky white in places, creating a shocking contrast . These are highly fluorescent
ES67 - Sulfur - $ 2000 Agrigento, Sicily, Italy small cabinet, 5.5 x 5.5 x 5.1 cm ex. Ernie Schlichter
Elemental sulfur in crystals this size, to 5.5 cm in length, are fairly rare, and will be harder to find in time considering the demise of italy’s famous sulfur deposits. This lovely group has rich golden-yellow color, transparent and lustrous crystals of size, along with an aesthetic size and arrangement. Together these qualities make this piece very choice. It is nearly complete all around with just a small bit of contact at the lower periphery and only very miniscule wear - remarkable, for a mineral of such fragility and softness. The being said, it is a sturdy specimen with phenomenal showmanship.
J08-12 - Celestine With Sulfur - $ 1800 SOLD Agrigento, Sicily, Italy cabinet, 15 x 13 x 10 cm
In this update are other classic old European association specimens out of the Rolf Wein Collection of Germany, where what is usually the "accent" mineral is instead the star. Here again, where usually the sulfur crystals get all the attention from the loclaity, here, the sulfur is a druse of microcrystals, and the pizzazz is in the large, elongated, gleaming celestites measuring to 5 cm. They stand out strikingly from the surface of the sulfur-covered matrix, and lie across small pockets, exposing them all around. A classic, but in rarely fine form, for celestite from this locality.
LW114 - Sulfur on Aragonite - $ 1450 SOLD Cianciana Mine, Agrigento , Sicily, Italy miniature, 4.5 x 3.2 x 2.8 cm ex. Martin Lewadny
Stunning miniature! A good Sulfur inhabits most everyone’s list of "must-haves", but to find two such quality crystals together , isolated on matrix , is a minor miracle. Note the sharp form of these crystals, quite a bit less modified than one normally sees and more "textbook" in style. The larger crystal, pristine and 2.3 cm in height, is deep yellow, GEMMY and lustrous. The second crystal, equal in size, but just slightly lighter in color, is nearly as perfect save a very small side contact and one small unobtrusive ding. All in all, a remarkable pair of Sulfur crystals that is so finely displayed you can look at it from any angle pretty happily, 360 degrees. This sulphur specimen is much much rarer than the Cozidizzi Mine stuff....Not from that mine. This is from a much rarer mine during the "old days" of mining!
LW40 - Celestine on Sulfur - $ 250 SOLD Machow Mine, Tarnebrzneg, Poland small cabinet, 8 x 6.4 x 4.5 cm ex. Martin Lewadny
Nice cluster of partially gemmy prismatic Celestine crystals growing on top of lemon yellow Sulfur crystals. There a few minor dings, and just a few of the smaller Celestines have damage. These are really exceptional quality celestine for the locality! A good combination piece from a classic locality.
LW82 - Celestine with Sulfur - $ 400 SOLD Cozzodisi Mine, Caltanissetta, Sicily, Italy small cabinet, 7.7 x 6.5 x 4.2 cm ex. Dr. Eugene Meieran ex. Martin Lewadny
Very nice combination piece with prismatic, partially-gemmy Celestines to 2.4 cm intergrown with and coated by Sulfur. The Celestines are lustrous and have a sharp, chisel-point habit. VERY attractive old classic!
NEX50 - Sulfur - $ 1250 SOLD Canizzaro Mine, Sicily, Italy miniature, 4.3 x 4.1 x 2.5 cm
A stunning, unusually sharp miniature without the usual rounded edges one often sees on large, isolated sulphur crystals! This is VERY transparent and gemmy! Old specimen, and rar ein this preservation given the notorious softness of the species.
PB25 - Sulfur on Aragonite - $ 2200 SOLD Agrigento Mine, Sicily, Italy small cabinet, 7.1 x 6.1 x 3.4 cm ex. Peter Bancroft
Have you noticed how hard it is to find a great sulfur specimen, today? The Sicilian mines have been closed for years and the old pieces, like this one which is particularly fine because of the aesthetic arrangement of crystals, are hard to obtain. It is a fragil emineral and so you assume that many old ones are simply destroyed over time. This one is not only aesthetic, but of superb quality as well: with the wonderful, rich, lemon, color. These sulfur crystals, the largest of which measure 3.0 cm across, are well formed, translucent and lustrous. They color contrast nicely with the underlying druse of white aragonite. This almost pristine specimen is certainly one of the best I have seen recently. AND IT IS MUCH BETTER IN PERSON. There are "decent" sulfurs and then there are truly oustanding specimens. This one, for the size , is outstandign and a worthy part of any serious collection. And the color...also much better in person!
RUSS-19 - Sulfur - $ 850 Vodinskoye, Samara Oblast, Russia miniature, 3.8 x 3 x 2.5 cm
Good sulfurs from Russia are extremely hard to get these days – much harder to get, in fact, that old Italian ones. Though we look, we find maybe 3 or 4 a year that are good. Here is a wonderfully transparent, architectural crystal, complete all around! It has a mesmerizing geometry to it, and is complete, bright yellow...would be a killer single crystal even from Italy where many came. From Russia, its a real surprise and of more significance for the locality
RUSS-20 - Sulfur - $ 275 SOLD Vodinskoye, Samara Oblast, Russia miniature, 3.5 x 3 x 2 cm
Good sulfurs from Russia are extremely hard to get these days – much harder to get, in fact, that old Italian ones. Though we look, we find maybe 3 or 4 a year that are good. What you have here is a crystal so fine it looks like a bright JEWEL perched on a field of dark bitumin-coated smaller crystals. The crystal measures 1.3 cm So rare in this quality and condition . . .
