STRONTIANITE and CHALCOPYRITE on BARITE - Dreislar, Sauerland, Germany

Dreislar is a classic locality for barite, to be sure, but I personally haven't seen STRONTIANITE from here before, and this piece hosts superb crystals of lustrous beige strontianite to 1 cm in size. This barite crystal is not as thinly bladed as normal from here, but rather is a thick, chisel-shaped crystal.

Strontianite, Celestine - Stoneco quarry (Maumee Stone Quarry; Maumee Quarry; Lime City Quarry), Lime City, Wood Co., Ohio, USA

9.6 x 6.7 x 5.7 cm. A STRIKING and VERY SHOWY Ohio specimen of lustrous, white strontianite partially pseudomorphing gray celestine crystals to 3.0 cm on a bit of limestone matrix. The crystals look hexagonal, but are in fact, parallel growth. They are WHITE FLOURESCENT and PHOSPHORESCENT! This very striking two-toned habit is unusual and was found only a few times in the late 70s and early 80s. The locality is now closed. Ex. Clyde Hardin Collection.

6.5 x 6.3 x 5.1 cm. A RARE, HUGE ball of glassy, colorless strontianite crystals on a bit of snow-white matrix from a CLASSIC Austrian locality - Oberdorf, Laming Valley, Styria. VERY SELDOM available in this size and quality. Also, most have a beige color or some shade of off-white. this one is shimmering and beautiful in its colorlessness. Also it has Light pink fluorescence. Ex Vienna Natural History Museum and James Zigras, and George Elling Collections.

4.7 x 3.8 x 3.0 cm. A RARE and BEAUTIFUL radial spray of white strontianite needles from a very famous locality - Cavradi, Switzerland. I have never seen such a good one for sale from here. A very small area of broken crystals is noted, but is certainly not a major detraction to this fine piece. The characteristic transparent, flattened, 2.3 cm quartz blade on the back proves this piece is from Cavradi and not from Illinois, as I would have initially thought. Ex. Brent Lockhart Collection.

7.2 x 4.7 x 2.9 cm. A showy and excellent German specimen from a famous locality - the Dreislar Mine, Sauerland. A sharp, knife-edge bladed, complete all-around and pristine, parallel-growth baryte crystal cluster with lovely pink highlights has sharp, lustrous and colorless strontianite crystals aesthetically scattered on the front and back. Brassy chalcopyrite crystals nicely accent this fine piece. Ex. Wilhelm Leithauser Collection.

Strontianite - Magnesite deposit, Oberdorf an der Laming, Laming valley, Bruck an der Mur, Styria, Austria

7.3 x 6.5 x 4.3 cm. It is very rare to find strontianite in sharp, hexagonal crystals, and this excellent and very rich example from this classic old locale is exceptional for this reason alone even if they weren’t also so pretty to look at. The largest crystal is 2.3 cm and is doubly terminated. The lustrous, translucent, colorless prisms are richly and aesthetically strewn on a maze-like, box-work matrix with sparkly dolomite. Ex. Helmut Bruckner Collection, a well-known German dealer and collector.

4.9 x 2.4 x 2.1 cm. Strontianite is a rare carbonate mineral (strontium carbonate) and one of only a handful of known strontium minerals. Crystals are rarer than the massive forms. Typical specimens have spiky, minute crystals in radiating aggregates or tufts, exactly as you see here in this fine miniature from the Minerva. Ex. Consie Prince Collection.

Strontianite, Magnesite - Magnesite deposit, Oberdorf an der Laming, Laming valley, Bruck an der Mur, Styria, Austria

Extremely fine (and rare for the species) hexagonal crystals sitting on a lovely drusy matrix (more strontianite?), all perched atop large magnesite crystals... Rarely do you see Strontianite in this habit and these sharp lustrous crystals with such a soft creamy color make you wish it was more common. This remarkable piece was in the Ed David collection, though my friend here trimmed it down from its previous incarnation as a big clunker into this well-balanced miniature. It is sawed on the back and bottom, but that doesn't show from the display face 5.6 x 3.5 x 3.5 cm

15.4 x 9.5 x 5.7 cm. A fine Ohio large cabinet specimen of lustrous, white strontianite partially pseudomorphing gray celestine crystals on limestone matrix. The huge crystal is 5.3 cm. The crystals look hexagonal, but are in fact, parallel growth. They are white fluorescent and phosphorescent. This very striking two-toned habit is unusual and was found only a few times in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The locality is now only sporadically accessible to collecting but these have not been found in some time, anyways. Ex. George Feist Collection.
