This perfect, equant, textbook-quality crystal is a VERY SIGNIFICANT example of this rare species for San Diego, of which few better exist. I recall the handwringing it caused when Chuck traded this from Irv Brown in the mid-1990s. By any standard, this is a beautiful example of the species from any US locale.

This is a gorgeous, very glassy, deep red tourmaline crystal in its own right. However, more than that, it is a unsique specimen as it features wonderful, translucent-to-transparent lustrous brown crystals of Stibiotantalite literally perched ATOP the termination! The piece is striking for gemoetry and color contrast aside from the rarity. Stibiotantalite is only rarely associated directly with tourmalines, and this is one of the most dramatic examples of the association I have seen from anywhere. Stibiotantalite is particularly rare from the Himalaya , moreover.

Stibiotantalite, Quartz - Himalaya Mine (Himalaya pegmatite; Himalaya dikes), Gem Hill, Mesa Grande District, San Diego Co., California, USA

4.2 x 2.2 x 1.7 cm. Stibiotantalite is a rare, rare-earth oxide and is very uncommon from the Himalaya Mine. This is a particularly rare specimen of brown stibiotantalite feathers richly included in a complete-all-around and pristine, water-clear quartz crystal set in feldspar matrix. Ex. Chuck Houser Collection.

3.0 x 2.0 x 1.0 cm. A rare association of two species of tantalite, from a small find here in the early 2000s. Obtained from the miners, the Gochenour brothers. I would say this must be fairly rare, two such sharply different and related species together like this. Ex. William Larson Collection.

1.8 x 1.5 x 0.1 cm. Stibiotantalite is a very uncommon species in this pegmatite, and these orange-red gem crystals are always highly treasured among collectors there. This is a fine thumbnail for sharpness, condition, color, and obvious gemmy transparency. Ex. William Larson Collection.

2.6 x 1.2 x 0.6 cm. Stibiotantalite is a very uncommon species in this pegmatite, and this is a very robust crystal for the locale (most are rather slender). Ex. William Larson Collection.

Stibiotantalite, Tapiolite, Quartz, Tourmaline, Albite - Cryo-Genie Mine (Cindy B-Cryogenie; Lost Valley Truck Trail prospect), Warner Springs, Warner Springs District, San Diego Co., California, USA

This is a unique specimen, the best of its small pocket. It was in the Chris Korpi collection and he made a point to obtain many of the oddball things that came out of this small series of pockets we lovingly call a mine. This is one that he had kept for a reference suite, when I bought the core of his collection some time ago. It remains an interesting and unique piece. 4.4 x 2.1 x 1.8 cm

This specimen brings together two of the rarer members of a complex pegmatite association of minerals. A navy blue crystal core of elbaite var, indicolite morphed into a city scape of pastel blue, translucent, pyramidal, terminations. Flanking the indicolite is an acicular spray of snow white albite and a complex crystal of very lustrous, golden-brown, stibiotantalite that even emits red highlights, The indicolite measures 3.0 cm in length and the stibiotantalite is 2.5 cm across. This is truly, a fine and rare combo specimen.

Stibiotantalite - Himalaya Mine, Mesa Grande, San Diego County, California, USA

Stibiotantalite is a VERY uncommon species in this pegmatite, and these orange-red gem crystals are always highly treasured among collectors there. This is a fine thumbnail, about as good as it gets for sharpness, condition, color, and obvious gemmy transparency. I do not think there is better quality of this species from any US locality and, in this size and beauty, i cannot think of transparent crystals from any other locale either.

Stibiotantalite is a VERY uncommon species in this pegmatite, and this is a very robust, fat crystal for the locale (most are rather slender , as with the one above).
