14.3 x 6.5 x 3.0 cm. This etched and unusually-formed, bi-colored spodumene is glassy and gemmy. A portion of the crystal is pink Kunzite and the rest is the pastel yellow-green color commonly referred to as Triphane. Such bi-colored crystals are unusual. A large specimen a bit taller than a soda can. Weighs approximately 560 grams.
3.5 x 1.2 x 0.9 cm. Super gemmy and lustrous yellow spodumene (var. Triphane) crystals of this quality are highly desirable and rarely encountered. I am not sure if it is twinned, as some people say they are. The sharply formed crystal has vivid yellow color and a strange, rounded termination. It LOOKS like Heliodor, but isn't. Exceptional material from Afghanistan. Ex. Marcus Budil inventory.
6.0 x 3.5 x 2.0 cm. A complete, doubly terminated, floater gem crystal of kunzite from recent finds at Mawi, Afghanistan. Most of the crystal has fine transparency with very high lustre. Some faces are well-striated and some are glass-smooth. The crystal has gorgeous lilac color, especially on the C-axis and the crystal is also twinned on the C-axis. A striking, steeply terminated, and very colorful pristine crystal. Weighs 75 grams.
A gemmy and INTENSELY lilac-colored kunzite crystal with an unusual smoothed termination from Afghanistan. The C-axis views of this crystal really show the beautiful color. The back of the crystal is contacted but is totally out of view. This piece definitely has cutting rough value. The color is astonishingly deep! 4.4 x 2.6 x 2.2 cm
4.5 x 4.0 x 2.0 cm. A superb miniature from a spectacular, lucky, freak find in the late 1970s. Much was sold as facet rough but some specimens were retained by the finder for many years. I and others purchased them in the late 1990s. This is an outstanding piece because it has a real termination that is sharp, uncommon for the county, and it has intense color. Also uncommon for any mine hereabouts but the old Chief. Ex. William Larson Collection.
8.5 x 2.3 x 1.0 cm. A classic old kunzite from one of the earliest locales in the County. Weighs 40 grams. Ex. William Larson Collection.
5.7 x 5.0 x 1.5 cm. A well-formed, greenish pastel colored spodumene from this classic San Diego County locale…though they are rarely seen for sale outside of the county and in any case most people would think this was from Brazil. Ex. William Larson Collection.
6.5 x 3.7 x 1.5 cm. A very gemmy, transparent, bi-colored spodumene from this small mine, collected by Roland Reed and sold to Chuck some years ago. It is complete-all-around and quite more appealing in person. Ex. Chuck Houser Collection.
9.6 x 6.8 x 1.8 cm. A doubly terminated kunzite crystal with striking elongated-but-complete terminations from the famous find known as the Beebe Hole, hit by Loren Beebe while garnet-prospecting over 25 years ago in remote San Diego County. This one has excellent pink color for the find. It is large, and exceptionally translucent/gemmy. The Beebe Hole was hit by accident when Loren Beebe was prospecting for garnets (around 1976) in this remote area and stumbled on a spodumene shard loose on the ground. Exploration led to a single pocket which he collected in its entirety and hoarded for several decades, selling primarily the cutting rough and keeping most of the better specimens until only recent years when they have been sold locally in the Southern California area. Spodumenes of this quality are quite uncommon in San Diego County and most were found rather further north in the Pala area, so the Beebe spodumenes are important in that they come from a different region of the county than the famous old turn-of-the-century Pala pieces. Ex. Chuck Houser Collection.
10 x 2.1 x 1.0 cm. A sculptural, strangely shaped, etched, doubly terminated triphane (yellow-green spodumene) from the Beebe Hole Mine in rural San Diego County. This gemmy and lustrous, cabinet-sized crystal has an unusual, angled termination. The C-axis termination shot highlights the subtle yellow-green color. Specimens of this quality were produced from 1974-1986. Ex. Wes Parker Collection. Weighs 20 grams.
A GORGEOUS, GEM, doubly-terminated and lustrous lilac CABINET kunzite crystal from Afghanistan. C-axis views of this lovely crystal really highlight the intense lilac color of this piece. Weight is 112 grams so it is of good size. 10.6 x 3.4 x 1.5 cm
2.7 x 2.6 x 1.3 cm. From one of the most classic and productive regions in the world to date for gem quality pink Spodumene. This unique and partially hydrothermally etched gem crystal has great form, wonderful luster, sharp faces, and a classic soft pink color. The piece was not easy to photograph, but it's a wonderful gem crystal of this classic material. It honestly looks like a sculpted piece of pink glass.
13.4 x 4.8 x 2.9 cm. The yellow varietal of spodumene, called triphane, is less common from these rich gem crystal localities than green and blue spodumene. This piece is a floater, totally complete-all-around - including the quartz attached atop as a nice accent. It is from the private collection of a native source of mine in Pakistan, who collected really unusual kunzite and spodumene crystals over a period of about 10 years through the 1990s glory days here. He only had about 2 dozen pieces in the collection, each carefully chosen to be unique. I believe his eye is good - this is a most unusual specimen for its color, its unusual bar-like shape, and for the floating quartz attached atop. The color is, if anything, more intense in person than in the photo. Most yellow triphanes are etched out and have poor surfaces, for whatever reason this occurs. This piece, though, has straight, glassy faces on the front and back in particular, that are so flat and smooth they seem polished. Weighs 367 grams.
4.8 x 4.0 x 2.8 cm. A classic, strongly striated, doubly terminated, floater, light pink kunzite crystal from Afghanistan. The arrowhead termination is striking. This is a transparent, gem-quality, perfect, very stocky crystal. Weighs 99 grams.
26 x 17 x 13 cm. Unrepaired and a pristine floater complete-all-around. The morganite measures 8 x 8 x 3.25 cm and is the size of a hockey puck and as symmetrical as a crystal model. It is perfect, as if it were carved from pink ice. The color is a classic pink, not peachy-orange. The contrast of the pastel pink morganite and its sharp hexagonal form to the strangely tilting vertical spray of intense pink kunzites is, obviously, quite startling and exciting to see. It is one of the most 3-dimensional mineral specimens I could imagine. This is a world class gem pegmatite combination specimen.
