A highly unusual pollucite crystal we have nicknamed "the brain" for its weird patterning and selective etching of the surface. The crystal is 6 x 4 x 4 cm in size, and perched 3-dimensionally up on bladed cleavelandite matrix. Actually, the piece displays both vertical and horizontally, with equal impact. When vertical, a thin kunzite crystal on one end becomes its base and pokes out at the bottom. This is one of the most unusual pollucite specimens i have seen, and although irregular , it is nevertheless a beautiful specimen. ex Lockhart collection. Joe Budd photos. A brilliantly pink, almost purple crystal with the best color you can get for the locality in this hue. It has great clarity, gemminess, and lustre. It GLOWS on the long axis when lit from below or above , with the BEST lilac-pink color you could ask for in a kunzite (right-uppre photo, lit from below). It is also a doubly-terminated floater, complete all around! No damage, and excellent display appeal, at a fair price for the quality, in my opinion. IF YOU EVER WANTED A REALLY GOOD AFGHANI kunzite, in this price range, I cannot imagine better...

A gorgeous doubly-terminated and multicolored crystal with an unusual gradation of pink through yellow to green coloration! This is sharp and complete all around, a near-floater with a little bit of attached lepidolite matrix at the bottom serving as a natural "balance" or pedestal. It weighs about 1 pound, or 419 grams.

Kunzite from Afghanistan [db_pics/new2012/gems-241a.JPG]Kunzite from Afghanistan [db_pics/new2012/gems-241b.JPG]

Kunzite is a varietal name given to pink Spodumene that was named after the noted gemologist and author George F. Kunz who worked for Tiffany and Co. during the early 1900's. This material is well loved for its splendid color, attractiveness, and sometimes rather large stones. Kuznite is not a very easy gemstone to cut due to the perfect cleavage planes and well cut gems are much appreciated due to this characteristic. This gem is a very appealing bright well cut, very very slightly included gem with a "baby pink" color (with a slight lavendar overtone) and a standard "Step Cushion" cut. Despite the amount of Kunzite available on today's market there are truly only two major sources in the world that produce gem quality crystals for cutting. This is a good sized gem for the material, and these stones are becoming harder to find in the market today (especially considering the higher prices being asked).

Kunzite from Nuristan region is now fairly common on the market, but one still can seek out individual pieces which excel above the crowd. This exceptionally sharp, elongated, totally gem crystal masses 500 grams; and for its unique aesthetics was one of the few large gem crystals kept by Herb Obodda in his collection (which we recently acquired), over decades of travel to this region. Some people love matrix kunzites, some prefer these gem floaters (complete and formed all the way around). Although there are certainly bigger kunzite floaters, I have seen few this size with such elegance. The crystal has only two minor spots of damage on an edge, and a small contact with a bit of attached matrix in the middle - otherwise pristine. It is well-terminated and has a pleasing pink color.. A shocking locality specimen! This came out of a small pocket hit recently (2002) by mine owner Roland Reed. It is a vivid hue and has great glassy lustre to it. It is completely terminated atop and is complete all around except for a few small trivial cleaves along the back edge (facing away from the term). It comes with an equally significant gemstone cut from rough out of the same pocket (below). Chuck, Irv, and Roland have 3 of the 4 major pieces foudn between them (of which this is one), and I am told there were under 20 pieces of even remotely any quality in the history of the mine, of which this pocket was the best producer

This crystal has incredibly unique form and terminations for a San Diego kunzite. It is a floater, complete all around! It has rich Pala-pink color down the c-axis , though paler from the sides. THis locality was an important producer of gem-grade cutting material in the early years of the 1900s when specimen and gem mining in San Diego provided much of the world's supply of the new species kunzite. An important old kunzite!

This is a well-balanced, very sharp kunzite crystal that measures 6.5 inches tall and 2 inches wide. It is 1.25 cm, or half an inch, thick. The crystal is totally PRISTINE without a nick on it. The pedestal of cleavelandite in which it sits, stark and upright, is bright sparkly white, and extremely showy in person. The Crystal has razor sharp edges and a superb termination, unusual in quality for a piece of this size in that larger terminations are typically etched out a bit. At about the midpoint, there is a small natural fracture in the crystal on its left edge, but the result is actually more interesting than detracting as the small split during growth was held together by surrounding cleavelandite, and there are some interesting rehealing/regrowth effects in the slight gap that is preserved. You can often get big kunzites from Afghanistan on the market. Usually, though, they do not have good matrix in association. To get a matrix-bound crystal with such poise and balance, with both associated minerals contributing to the overall aesthetic instead of just "host rock" as matrix, is really the top aim of the collector; and this piece stands out to me as a superb specimen for those reasons. Spodumene, Spodumene (Var: Hiddenite) from Adams Hiddenite and Emerald Mine (Alexander Prospect; Abernathy Prospect; Hiddenite Mine), Alexander Co., North Carolina, USA [db_pics/mdpics/MD-104067a.jpg]

A rare MATRIX hiddenite, from the Adam's Farm locality which is actually the type locale for the original find of this material. It was most likely from that original era, in the late 1800s, though no detaile dhistory survives. I handled this piece the first time back in 1998 when I purchased it from the Barlow Collection dispersal, and now have the privilege to handle this special little guy again. 3.5 x 2.2 x 2.1 cm

8.7 x 4.2 x 2.7 cm. In person, this complete and terminated spodumene crystal has a faint green color, and a hint of pink (too subtle for the camera to pick up, unfortunately). It has fine transparency, and nice accenting albite matrix. There is a little tourmaline included inside the sharp chisel termination! The albite wraps around the back and both sides of the fine crystal to really set it off nicely.

11.4 x 9.5 x 7.9 cm. This is a spectacular specimen consisting of a very large, complete, terminated kunzite crystal, decorated with dozens of gemmy little tourmalines and some quartz crystals on the side of the kunzite and on the albite matrix. This gem crystal is very gemmy from top to bottom, and has a nice pink blush to it. The termination is superb.

16.6 x 3.8 x 2.8 cm. A huge GEM crystal of yellow-green spodumene, weighing in at a remarkable 452 grams! It IS doubly-terminated, though the terminations are rough. The center of the crystal is nearly glass-clear, with beautiful bright color. The crystal is an inch thick and really chunky, which does not come out too well in the pics.

Spodumene (Var: Kunzite), Quartz, Albite from Konar Valley (Kunar Valley), Konar (Kunar; Konarh; Konarha; Nuristan) Province, Afghanistan [db_pics/mdpics/MD-118153a.jpg]

9 x 7 x 6 cm. Lovely and intensely colored deep lavender Kunzite with Quartz and Albite. Kunzite: 5.5 x 2.5 x 1.4 cm. Not often will you find a Kunzite with this rich of a color, and consistent all the way through the crystal, no less (on all axes, not just the c axis!). The crystal has an excellent sharp termination and it has the brilliant silky luster that Kunzites are so well-known for.

Spodumene (Var: Kunzite), Quartz, Lepidolite, Tourmaline from Mawi pegmatite, Laghman (Lagman; Nuristan) Province, Afghanistan [db_pics/mdpics/MD-118155a.jpg]

13 x 7.2 x 6.3 cm. Classic Afghani Kunzite, like a chisel point, very sharp. It has great size (13 cm) and form, very good luster, and an attractive color that ranges from pink along the outside to a light green near the core. The matrix association makes the piece more valuable and rarer than a relatively common single would be, and the sharp termination adds appeal.
