Sphalerite, Galena from Naica, Mun. de Saucillo, Chihuahua, Mexico [db_pics/mdpics/MD-137784a.jpg]

6.2 x 4.4 x 4.2 cm. Out of the F. John Barlow Collection (#3336) - an old Naica sphalerite with really sharp crystals, including a superb one right in the middle of the display face with gorgeous striations (actually minute stepping) in a band around the side and on the termination. These are large, euhedral crystals, not the usual shallow and rather nebulous ones. Fine luster as well!

Fluorite, Sphalerite from Minerva No. 1 Mine, Cave-in-Rock, Cave-in-Rock Sub-District, Illinois - Kentucky Fluorspar District, Hardin Co., Illinois, USA [db_pics/mdpics/MD-137953a.jpg]

4.2 x 3.9 x 3.0 cm. Look at the transparency of these super Illinois fluorites! They are perched beautifully on the matrix of sphalerite. The fluorites measure to 1.5 cm; they are in fine condition save for a couple of tiny contacts, which as you can see do not detract much at all from the beauty of this specimen.

11.9 x 8.9 x 4.8 cm. Another fine Tri-State piece - this, a large, gorgeous galena cube with four smaller ones accenting it. The big one measures 3 cm along the edge. There are some tiny ruby-jack sphalerites on the matrix as well. It is the isolation of these crystals and their attractive arrangement on the matrix that makes this specimen so showy. Ex. Feist Collection.

Sphalerite from Dojeshan Mine, Guangdong Province, China [db_pics/mdpics/MD-140480a.jpg]

8.3 x 5.5 x 4.5 cm. A SHOWY and EXCELLENT cluster of large, lustrous, striated, jet-black, twinned sphalerite crystals from a 1992-1993 Chinese find. This fine piece is a complete, PRISTINE, FLOATER and has many display views. Ex. Brent Lockhart Collection.

A really neat locality piece with an approximately 8mm amber-colored, gorgeous sphaerlite crystal completely enclosed within the tip of this undamaged quartz point! 7.1 x 2.8 x 1.7 cm

Sphalerite, Galena from Santo Domingo Mine, Francisco Portillo, West Camp, Santa Eulalia District, Mun. de Aquiles Serdán, Chihuahua, Mexico [db_pics/mdpics/MD-142208b.jpg]

6.5 x 6.4 x 5.9 cm. Because the lusters are so similar, it is hard to distinguish in the pics here where the galena ends and the sphalerite begins. But in general, the galena has formed between the sphalerite crystals with strange smooth, curved faces, and as you can see, the sphalerites have these intricately stepped/tiered faces, with a shiny black luster. There is very little matrix here - this is almost all intergrown galena and sphalerite.

Chalcopyrite, Galena, Sphalerite from Cavnic (Kapnic; Kapnik), Maramures Co., Romania [db_pics/mdpics/MD-142219a.jpg]

12.5 x 11.2 x 4.9 cm. I think you can see from the photo how wonderfully unique this LARGE Eastern European combo specimen out of the Wein Collection is. This is largely due to the extremely unusual rounded faces of the galena crystals - not to be confused with non-crystallized, massive galena - the faces are just super-modified and shallow. On them sit crystals of brassy chalcopyrite, and here and there, sphalerites - which stand out against this backdrop of silky silver galena. Ex. Wein Collection (Stuttgart).

Sphalerite, Chalcopyrite, Dolomite from Blue Moon Mine, Picher Field, Tri-State District, Ottawa Co., Oklahoma, USA [db_pics/mdpics/MD-142245a.jpg]

9.7 x 9.4 x 5.5 cm. At the top of this matrix is a cluster of BIG sphalerites, measuring to 4 cm across. They crown a matrix of white dolomite sprinkled with smaller sphalerites and little brassy chalcopyrites. Big sphalerites such as this from Oklahoma are not common at all on the market! These are complete except for at the very back where they contacted matrix. Classic mid-1900s Tri-State district material! Ex. Feist Collection

6.4 x 6.4 x 4.5 cm. A BIG compound crystal of sphalerite from Naica, a FLOATER with no contacts, decorated with a "snowfall" of little tan calcites. The complex faces all over this crystal really gleam, and highlight the pretty architectural striations.

Sphalerite from Iron Cap Mine, DeFrees District, Greenlee Co., Arizona, USA [db_pics/mdpics/MD-146041a.jpg]

3.0 x 2.4 x 1.9 cm. A superb Arizona sphalerite from the Iron Cap Mine, a mine south of Tucson that primarily mined gold, and secondarily silver and copper - but for mineral collectors, also turned out some really good sphalerites. This one is complete and very sharp as you can see, on a carefully trimmed matrix. The crystal itself measures 2.2 cm across. It is actually a very deep, slightly translucent olive-coffee color. Ex. Carlton Davis collection.

Calcite, Sphalerite from Elmwood mine, Carthage, Central Tennessee Ba-F-Pb-Zn District, Smith Co., Tennessee, USA [db_pics/mdpics/MD-146081a.jpg]

6.0 x 3.4 x 2.1 cm. A 4.8 cm twinned and doubly terminated calcite crystal aesthetically set on sphalerite from the famous and now-closed Elmwood Mine. This glassy, classic light amber beauty is nearly pristine and are now much in demand. The very faintest of termination edge wear is noted, but is certainly not a detraction, as you can see.

Galena, Sphalerite from Septemvri mine (Deveti Septemvri mine), Madan ore field, Rhodope Mts, Smolyan Oblast, Bulgaria [db_pics/mdpics/MD-146159a.jpg]

4.4 x 3.9 x 2.2 cm. One superb crystal of skeletal, battleship gray, galena, measuring 1.3 cm in length, is aesthetically perched on other galena crystals exhibiting various stages of etching. For added effect, scattered on the galena are several crystals of resinous, translucent yellow crystals of sphalerite to .6 cm across. The etching, and color contrast is super!

Galena, Sphalerite, Marcasite from Barr Mine, Vinegar Hill, Treece, Picher Field, Tri-State District, Cherokee Co., Kansas, USA [db_pics/mdpics/MD-148273b.jpg]

13.4 x 12.4 x 7.1 cm. An old label cut from a larger list says "from Barr Mine, Treece, Kansas, Boodle Lane, November 6, 1937". So this large and impressive old Tri-State specimen has a very specific date and locality to it! It consists of sharp cubes of galena on a glittering mass of microcrystalline, deep red sphalerite (the maroon color shows up under strong light), with minor associated marcasite. It seems to have formed as a thick knob around dolomite which you can now see in the center of the underside of the specimen.

3.0 x 2.0 x 1.9 cm. A showy and excellent cluster of frosted, gemmy, cherry-red rhodochrosite scalenohedrons on matrix and very nicely complimented by a sharp, isolated sphalerite crystal and a bit of white calcite. Highly representative of the species and famous locality, even with one broken crystal. Nearly all of the crystals are well-terminated.

Fluorite, Sphalerite, Baryte from Elmwood mine, Carthage, Central Tennessee Ba-F-Pb-Zn District, Smith Co., Tennessee, USA [db_pics/mdpics/MD-149509a.jpg]

18.5 x 11.5 x 5 cm. A terrific combination piece from the famous Elmwood Mine in Tennessee. The classic Baryte and Sphalerite is capped by a beautiful purple Fluorite that is 5 x 5 x 2 cm, and partially gemmy through and through. Although there is a little bit of edge wear on the Fluorite (thus reducing the value but not the showiness and impact visually of the piece), this Large Cabinet specimen is very aesthetic and virtually irreplaceable!
