A DRAMATIC and AESTHETIC Elmwood CABINET plate of highly lustrous "ruby-jack" sphalerite crystals on matrix with a beautifully set 2.3 cm, doubly terminated, glassy, light amber calcite crystal. SUPER GEMMY and LUSTROUS, yellow sphalerite crystals to 1.0 cm aesthetically set atop magnetite matrix from the famous Pierrepont Mine in New York. An edge bruise on the termination of the large crystal is on the back and is out of sight. RARE material from finds in the late 90s. Hard as heck to get today, espeically in combo pieces like this! 3.0 x 2.8 x 1.7 cm

Fluorite, Sphalerite from Elmwood mine, Carthage, Central Tennessee Ba-F-Pb-Zn District, Smith Co., Tennessee, USA [db_pics/mdpics/MD-38296a.jpg]

We have been buying all the really good Elmwood material we can get our hands on, with it disappearing so quickly from the market. This superb mini features three silky, transparent, intergrown crystals of purple fluorite, on a carefully-trimmed base of crystallized sphalerite. The crystals measure to 1.5 cm on edge, and are complete and undamaged. 4.5 x 2.9 x 2.6 cm

A VERY AESTHETIC and pristine specimen of a lustrous, COMPLETE ALL-AROUND, 2.0 cm galena cube beautifully perched on lustrous sphalerite crystal with a scattering of tiny, gemmy calcite crystals. This exquisite Lewadny Collection piece is from the now-closed Cumberland Mine, which is near the famous and now-closed Elmwood Mine. NOT your common galena specimen! 3.7 x 3.6 x 2.7 cm

Sphalerite from Elmwood mine, Carthage, Central Tennessee Ba-F-Pb-Zn District, Smith Co., Tennessee, USA [db_pics/mdpics/MD-38415a.jpg]

These rainbow-glittery irridescent sphalerites came out of only one pocket about 5 years back at the Elmwood. They were always scarce on the market, and with the mine now closed, all Elmwood pieces have now greatly jumped in value. These isolated crystals measure to 2 cm. The two larger ones on top are complete on the display face, with the back being contact where they were attached to the matrix (the contact is a bit on top of the uppermost crystal). Other complete crystals are isolated in the foreground. The sphalerites sit on a bed of sparkly dolomite. 7.7 x 7.7 x 4.8 cm

A CLASSIC, CABINET Tri-State District specimen of lustrous, deep-red, ruby-jack, sphalerite crystals and a scattering of calcite crystals on matrix. The gemmy, very sharp, doubly terminated, 1.8 cm calcite crystal REALLY adds character to this old-timer. Ex Ed Ruggiero Collection, who purchased this piece in 1975. 14.3 x 10.7 x 8.0 cm

A sharp calcite twin , terminated on the top end (the back/bottom is a natural contact face where the specimen was removed from the pocket wall), with sphalerite accenting both sides. Sphalerite was the major zinc ore that was the whole reason for the Elmwood. 5.5 x 5.3 x 2.5 cm

Attractive, translucent, color zoned, fluorite crystals, with dark purple cores and lilac edges, measure 5 cm across. In addition, there are euhedral galena and sphalerite crystals on the back side of the specimen. It is a stunning example of classic, purple zoned fluorite from these now defunct mines! Fluorite, Sphalerite from Gordonsville Mine, Carthage, Central Tennessee Ba-F-Pb-Zn District, Smith Co., Tennessee, USA [db_pics/mdpics/MD-39991a.jpg]

Bright, lustrous, black, sphalerite crystals to 1.5 cm across, form the matrix for a magnificent, translucent, deep purple fluorite cube (2 inches or 5 cm across!). The equant fluorite even exhibits slight color zoning at the crystal’s edges for added visual impact. I know this is "just" fluorite and sphalerite, once common from the mine, but try to find a better one for the price today and you will be hard pressed. This specimen is superb in its aesthetics and even when the mine was producing would have been a top-notch specimen 11.1 x 7.6 x 6.5 cm
