Sphalerite from Hyatt Mine, Talcville, St Lawrence Co., New York, USA [db_pics/mdpics/MD-20698a.jpg]

A glowing specimen of VERY gemmy, brilliantly colored sphalerite from a small but classic find of almost a decade ago. Note that these crystals are all GEMMY, and twinned as well. There is some very minor wear and an internal fracture in one crystal (not damage ) , but overall the piece is in excellent shape and displays like such a killer you would not even guess it was a sphalerite! 2.6 x 2 x 1.25 cm

3.9 x 3.2 x 2.9 cm. This specimen is from an old stash, from an unusual pocket where the sphalerite had a stunningly colorful iridescence to it. That chink you see on the left side of the fluorite is a pocket contact that naturally healed while still in the pocket; little faces have formed on it - so it is not damage.

3.7 x 3.6 x 2.9 cm. A superb and classic purple fluorite cube on sphalerite matrix from the Elmwood Mine. This pristine crystal super edge zoning and two very nifty, notched corners. The nearly transparent crystal has beautiful, shimmering faces, which are actually secondary fluorite overgrowth crystals.

24.5 x 16.5 x 3.9 cm. A superb large cabinet plate from the mines at Naica, Mexico. Lustrous and translucent, sea-green fluorite cubes to 4.2 cm with an infinite number of second-generation fluorite overgrowths aesthetically scattered on massive sphalerite matrix covered with a variety of quartz forms. This fine, old-time piece dates to the 1970s. Ex. Brent Lockhart Collection, purchased in 1975.

4.9 x 3.9 x 2.0 cm. A sharp, sculptural specimen of densely intergrown, twinned crystals of sphalerite, from Naica. On the lustrous faces of the crystals you can see pretty, subtle geometric growth patterns. Old material. Ex. Dave Stoudt Collection.

3.9 x 3.4 x 2.2 cm. This specimen is from an old stash from an unusual pocket where the sphalerite had a stunningly colorful iridescence to it. Both the sphalerite and fluorite are complete (flat matrix contact on back of specimen) - the sphalerite has dozens of microfaces on it. What is interesting is that there are also some sharp euhedral isolated crystals of sphalerite elsewhere on the matrix, and they too are highly iridescent.

6.0 x 5.4 x 3.8 cm. Gleaming, razor-sharp, snowy-white rhombs of calcite are piled up on a matrix of intermixed, massive pyrite and sphalerite. You can see some tiny chalcopyrites speckling the surface of the calcites. Ex. Dave Stoudt Collection.

6.9 x 5.4 x 5.4 cm. A superb Elmwood piece out of the collection of Marty Lewadny. A fine calcite twin, measuring 5 cm, slants off a field of small calcites that cover the surface of a cluster of dark crystals of sphalerite.

Gypsum, Calcite, Sphalerite from Joplin Field, Tri-State District, Jasper Co., Missouri, USA [db_pics/mdpics/MD-209858b.jpg]

15.3 x 10.8 x 3.4 cm. An old Tri-State specimen that is quite unusual: on a surface of deep red micro-sphalerites (a few of them larger, with one isolated crystal measuring 1 cm) are several snowy white crystals. These are very sharp crystals of calcite that have been wrapped in a snowy layer of gypsum - and the note from George Feist on the bottom of its base indicates he thought that pseudomorphism was going on. If you look closely, you can see the sharp faces of the calcite crystals where they show in places through the gypsum, so this may be a replacement caught in progress or simply a very thick (and unusual) coating. Ex. George Feist Collection.

11.5 x 7.5 x 4.2 cm. This is an outstanding Tri-State specimen (probably 40-60 years old). Here you have four superb amber-colored calcites perfectly arranged along the edge of a matrix covered with sparkling, wine-colored sphalerites. The largest calcite measures 6.5 cm. Ex. George Feist Collection.

Sphalerite, Quartz (Var: Amethyst) from Commodore Mine, Amethyst Vein, Creede District, Mineral Co., Colorado, USA [db_pics/mdpics/MD-210596a.jpg]

5.3 x 3.5 x 3.4 cm. This is a very distinctive Creede Sphalerite association specimen. The Sphalerite is very gemmy with the typical honey and green color that one is accustomed to seeing from this mine, and they are associated with minor pinkish-purple Amethyst crystals and a few dull-grey cubic Galena crystals. The Sphalerite crystals on this specimen are very good sized for the mine. This piece was collected in 2004 (most likely off the dumps).

10 x 8.8 x 6.4 cm. Here are three gemmy, light amber calcite twins, with glassy luster, right next to a rich bed of super-lustrous crystals of sphalerite. The little white crystals are dolomite. Ex. Mullane Collection.

Fluorite, Sphalerite from Cave-in-Rock, Cave-in-Rock Sub-District, Illinois - Kentucky Fluorspar District, Hardin Co., Illinois, USA [db_pics/mdpics/MD-211917a.jpg]

10.4 x 8.2 x 2.4 cm. The beautiful balance of fluorite and crystallized sphalerite here looks a lot more like Elmwood than Illinois, but the razor-sharp, silky faces of the crystals say "Illinois". This is an unusual-looking specimen for this locality, and just beautiful. The crystals measure to 2 cm on edge. These pretty crystals even have phantoms inside.

14.4 x 7.4 x 2.9 cm. From the Feist Collection, a large matrix covered with dolomite crystals, upon which sit fat crystals of sphalerite (opaque-looking, but actually a coffee color inside). Atop a mound of the sphalerite crystals, a lone scalenohedron of calcite has grown. You can see little chalcopyrites scattered around as well.

18.9 x 15.2 x 12.2 cm. This is a very large, gaping pocket lined with sharp dogtooth crystals of calcite, upon which sit sharp crystals of sphalerite measuring to 1.5 cm. They are quite dramatic in their isolation on the contrasting stark white calcites. This fine piece is from mining in 1979.
