5.7 x 4.6 x 3.3 cm. A superb "flower" of radial Sphalerite crystals that range up to 2.5 cm. The luster is superb, and the crystals are gemmy enough to see the classic "ruby jack" red coloring on many of the tips. Ex. Charlie Key.

9.6 x 8.7 x 4.4 cm. Perched on a siliceous matrix with splendent, orange-black sphalerite crystals, to .75 cm across, is a large crystal of gemmy, lavender fluorite. Associated in the lower-right is a matte, battleship-gray, crystal of galena, 1.5 cm across. This slightly distorted cube measures 4.5 cm in length and exhibits edge color zoning. Ex. Harold Urish Collection.

6.3 x 4 x 3.5 cm. This is a very rare and complex carbonate species that was found only sporadically, in small pockets, in the older days of this mine. This is a niece specimen showing the paragenesis of the mineral, on altering fluorite matrix. Ex. Martin Zinn Collection.

11.8 x 10.8 x 6.4 cm. A large Illinois "classic" combo specimen, with zoned cubes of fluorite surrounding a central cluster of large sphalerites. The big fluorites, to 3.5 cm across, have golden-yellow cores wrapped in transparent purple. Sparkly baryte covers the back of the specimen, and you can see some accenting white crystals on the main display face as well.

5.5 x 3.6 x 2.7 cm. A fine sphalerite specimen from the famous Denton Mine of Southern Illinois. Sharp, highly lustrous, jet-black sphalerite crystals to 1.9 cm are scattered on matrix. Most of the crystals are twinned. Some of the smaller sphalerites have "ruby jack" gemminess to them. Ex. Ross Lillie Collection (1983).

Hemimorphite, Sphalerite from Mineral Point, Upper Mississippi Valley District, Iowa Co., Wisconsin, USA [db_pics/mdpics/MD-184602a.jpg]

8.0 x 4.3 x 7.5 cm. An unusual hemisphere of sphalerite has a coating of what seems to be ivory colored hemimorphite. Possibly this is a pseudomorph replacement caught in process. Ex. Carnegie Museum Collection.

Another first class thumb, this one a GEM yellow sphalerite from New York. Such pieces are extremely rare and this is one of the best of any size that I have seen or know of from this zinc mine. It is nearly pristine, is gemmy all through, and has a bright color that is easily seen without any backlighting at all, just like yellow glass! Thumbnail, 2.75 x 1.75 x 1.5 cm

6.8 x 5.1 x 3.3 cm. Sphalerite was the whole reason for the Elmwood Mine, as an ore of zinc, and you often see it as the "base" of calcite, dolomite and fluorite specimens from there. Occasionally, the sphalerite itself formed nice crystals, and large ones, as these, which measure up to 2.8 cm across, on sparkly micro dolomite. Ex. George Feist Collection.

4.2 x 4.0 x 3.9 cm. Semseyite is an uncommon lead, antimony sulfosalt, seldom found in well-formed crystal groups such as this. This is a superb, complete all-around and pristine cluster of sharp sprays of lightly iridescent, metallic-lustre semseyite blades on sphalerite matrix. From near the Type Locality. Ex. Ed Ruggiero Collection.

Fluorite, Sphalerite from Elmwood mine, Carthage, Central Tennessee Ba-F-Pb-Zn District, Smith Co., Tennessee, USA [db_pics/mdpics/MD-187521a.jpg]

8.9 x 8.9 x 3.9 cm. Glowing crystals of purple fluorite ring a rich mass of crystallized sphalerite, the zinc ore that was the focus of mining at the Elmwood for decades before it closed maybe 5 years ago. The fluorites measure to 1.7 cm along the edge. You can see how the deep coffee-colored sphalerite has formed large euhedral forms on the surface of which are hundreds of small, complex sub-crystals.

24.1 x 18.6 x 12.4 cm. This is a rich, superb old Tri-State specimen. The chert matrix is thickly covered with crystallized sphalerite, actually a deep amber to wine color. On top of the sphalerite are sprinkled hundreds of brassy little triangular crystals of chalcopyrite in an epitaxial (attached) overgrowth. Ex. George Feist Collection.
