7.8 x 5.3 x 4.2 cm. A striking, 5.2 cm, smoky quartz crystal "sentinel" is fully "clothed" on all sides with gemmy and lustrous, orange spessartines and "guards" impressive feldspar "porch" covered with spessartines and two smokyquartzes. Only the termination of the smoky lacks spessartines. The pointed termination is frosted. Complete all-around and pristine, this is an outstanding spessartine garnet and smoky quartz specimen from recent Chinese finds.
7.1 x 6.8 x 4.8 cm. Gemmy and lustrous, dark cherry-red spessartine garnets to 8 mm are richly and stunningly scattered on the dramatic, starkly contrasting, blocky, stepped, albite crystal matrix. An outstanding combination specimen from this well-known locale.
5.1 x 4.0 x 2.3 cm. Helvite is rarely found from Tongbei, China, which has become very famous for its spessartine. This excellent helvite specimen has one well-placed, dominant crystal measuring 1.5 cm, top to bottom. The helvite is complete and has textbook, octahedral form. The richly scattered, very gemmy, golden-yellow spessartine garnets on the contrasting orthoclase crystal matrix make for a nice accent, as well.
3.8 x 3.6 x 2.7 cm. A fine cluster of highly lustous and gemmy (yes, when backlit) garnet crystals from Aggeneys, South Africa. These garnets have a distinct cinnamon fire to them. The largest crystal is 1.5 cm across. An excellent specimen of garnets from a seldom-seen locale. Ex, Charlie Key stock.
2.2 x 2.2 x 2.1 cm (largest). A fine 2-piece set of fine spessartine garnets from a major recent find. The full locality information for this deposit is near the town of Loliondo, close to Serengeti National Park and 7 km from the Kenyan border, W-NW of the north end of Lake Natron. It is closed to heavy traffic and on Maasai tribal lands. Some of these are extremely large, but they typically get less transparent as the size gets larger. The crystals light up a pretty orangey-red color, similar to a Chinese scheelite, under good light. The crystals weigh 15 and 8 grams or 23 grams total.
An architectually superb specimen of very gemmy, lustrous and transparent orange spessartine garnet crystals to 5 mm coating sharp albite crystals from Tongei, China. The form is due to overgrowth upon feldspar crystals. We have posted several Chinese spessartines recently in auction, but this is one of the finest that we have had up. 6.7 x 4.2 x 2.5 cm
5.9 x 5.4 x 4.5 cm. A huge and superb gem example of a garnet from a major recent find. The full locality information for this deposit is near the town of Loliondo, close to Serengeti National Park and 7 km from the Kenyan border, W-NW of the north end of Lake Natron. It is closed to heavy traffic and on Maasai tribal lands. The crystals light up a pretty orangey-red color, similar to a Chinese scheelite, under good light. This large crystal is a slightly distorted trapezohedron. This one, again, has a lot of good transparency to it, yet weighs a stunning 210 grams.
6.7 x 4 x 2.5 cm. A classic Tongbei specimen - Smoky Quartz crystals generously covered with gemmy Spessartine Garnets. The Smoky QUartzes are up to 1.3 cm in size and have good color and luster. The beautiful spessartine Garnets are gemmy, deep orange, and have the superb, striated luster that makes them so special. Ex. Charlie Key.
1.7 x 1.4 x 1.4 cm (largest). A superb 2-piece set of gem examples of spessartine garnets from a major recent find. These crystals weigh 7 grams each or 14 grams total.
4.6 x 3.3 x 2.3 cm. A sharp, 1.2-cm, euhedral spessartine garnet on a complex albite crystal. The major and minor garnets glow once lit with even a moderate light source, showing a faint image of the underlying albite.
6.5 x 4.4 x 4.2 cm. Good spessartines from Arizona are rare. A 1.2 cm, incredibly lustrous and sharp spessartine is set on rhyolite matrix. This is excellent and seldom available material from the Aquarius Mountains. A couple of points of red indicate that this is spessartine.
3.8 x 3.5 x 2.2 cm. A 1.4 cm, sharp, gemmy, deep red spesartine garnet is beautifully perched atop a sculptural matrix of pearlescent muscovite and quartz on this aesthetic specimen from recent finds in the Shengus Valley of Pakistan. The garnet has textbook trapezohedral form and is nearly pristine. Very highly representative material from this well-known locale. The unretouched backlit photo highlights the gemminess and gorgeous red color saturation.
3.6 x 2.2 x 1.8 cm. A 1 cm garnet in schist from an unusual locality. Ex. John White Collection.
13.8 x 13.8 x 10.5 cm. A dramatic cabinet specimen from the less well-known Pack Rat Mine of San Diego County. Gemmy and lustrous, reddish-orange spessartine garnets are festooned on the starkly contrasting, mounded matrix of snow-white albite. This is seldom available, large material, and only available from insider collections. Older material from the Chuck Houser Collection.
3.6 x 2.9 x 2.3 cm. A surreal and superbly etched, but completely terminated spessartine garnet from the recent Brazilian find. The lustre and clarity are superb, and are complimented by the lovely wine-red color. The gemminess and the stepped patterns on this particular piece are amazing. The little, 4 mm, doubly terminated, gem quartz crystal perched on one edge is a fine accent. A very high quality spessartine from this find. Weighs 32 grams.
