7.1 x 3.4 x 2.9 cm. This is an exceptional example of this combination from Tongbei: the smoky quartz, rather than being just translucent and/or dull, is Swiss quality in transparency and luster.
6.8 x 5.9 x 3.8 cm. A fine Tongbei specimen. Here, you have several smoky quartzes crossing one another. They are unusually clear for this locality, and the spessartines are gloriously bright and gemmy. As you can see, the horizontal crystal is doubly-terminated - unusual for these, as they mostly grow up from the matrix. This one grew sideways across the vertical crystal.
2.7 x 2.3 x 1.8 cm. A beautiful floater crystal of gemmy spessartine garnet from recent finds here, of superb form, quality and gemminess. About an inch in size. Choice selection from a large pocket of the material.

3.0 x 2.9 x 1.8 cm. Marienfluss spessartines used to set the standard, and were considered at one time the world’s best spessartines for collectors, for sharpness, color, and gemminess. Today they are still desirable, just so rare most people have never seen one. This sharp crystal exceeds 1 cm and is very nicely colored a classic ultra-orange hue. It is, unusually, on matrix of quartz. Ex. Charlie Key.
1.9 x 1.6 x 1.6 cm, 1.8 x 1.8 x 1.4 cm. Two fine examples of garnets from a major recent find. The full locality information for this deposit is near the town of Loliondo, close to Serengeti National Park and 7 km from the Kenyan border, W-NW of the north end of Lake Natron. It is closed to heavy traffic and on Maasai tribal lands. Some of these are extremely large, but they typically get less transparent as the size gets larger. The crystals light up a pretty orangey-red color, similar to a Chinese scheelite, under good light. These two crystals weigh a combined 23 grams.
6.7 x 4.9 x 4.0 cm. Beautifully gemmy and lustrous, burnt-orange spessartine garnets, nicely accented by a lone, glassy, 1.5 cm, quartz crystal, cover the 3-dimensional matrix of this fine specimen from recent finds at Tongbei, China.
2.0 x 1.9 x 1.8 cm. Classic trapezohedral garnet crystal form. This crystal weighs 11 grams.
8.9 x 7.2 x 5.4 cm. A fine spessartine garnet and smoky quartz specimen from Tongbei, China. An imposing, 5.5 cm, mostly enveloped, smoky quartz "sentinel" protects the upright matrix plate covered with gemmy and lustrous, orange spessartines. Smaller smoky quartzes poking out are a nice accent. The termination of the smoky quartz is spessartine-free.
5.3 x 4.2 x 1.8 cm. These are big, gemmy, reddish-orange spessartine garnets from Tongbei, China. The large, beautifully striated crystal is 2.5 cm across. An excellent and uncommon plate from this very well-known locale.
5.9 x 5.0 x 3.8 cm. A beautiful and aesthetic plate dominated by a leaning, pristine, glassy, 4.2 cm smoky quartz crystal. The two smoky quartzes and the plate are richly covered with very gemmy, orange spessartine garnets to 6 mm. This is a highly representative example of the recent finds from Tongbei, China.
13.9 x 9.0 x 5.8 cm. Gemmy and lustrous, wine-red spessartine garnets to 1.0 cm richly cover the cabinet-sized matrix of contrasting, white albite crystals from recent finds at Shengus, Pakistan. These garnets are exceptionally gemmy for the locale, so this is a highly representative, large specimen for the species and locale. The garnets are very lustrous and these are modern classics.
2.2 x 2.0 x 1.8 cm. A top gem example of a garnet from a major recent find. The full locality information for this deposit is near the town of Loliondo, close to Serengeti National Park and 7 km from the Kenyan border, W-NW of the north end of Lake Natron. It is closed to heavy traffic and on Maasai tribal lands. The crystals light up a pretty orangey-red color, similar to a Chinese scheelite, under good light. This crystal weighs 16 grams.
9.1 x 6.2 x 3.8 cm. Gemmy and lustrous, sparkling burnt orange spessartine garnets cover the feldspar matrix on this fine, 3-dimensional specimen from recent finds at Tongbei, China. The three smoky quartz crystals are a nice accent and you can see where the garnets have totally encrusted blocky feldspar crystals to 3.3 cm.
