Bright spessartine garnet xls to several mm on matrix , from recent finds! 8.2 x 7.3 x 3.8
4.9 x 4.8 x 1.4cm. From the personal garnet collection of Bill Larson, a sprinkling of jewel-like, orangey-red crystals of spessartine, unusually (for this locality) isolated on the feldspar matrix rather than massed together - and therefore very pretty.
13.4 x 12.4 x 6.8 cm. A large plate of superbly lustrous, wine-red spessartines to just under one centimeter – there are dozens here, shining like jewels and set off strikingly against the stark white marble matrix.
8.4 x 4.9 x 3.4 cm. Compared to the usual Tongbei spessartine specimen, these crystals have a slightly silky luster to them that is really pretty - even compared to the usual adamantine luster. What is more, they are very transparent, as the slightly less reflective faces allow better vision into the gemmy interiors of the crystals. Finally, they have good size to them as well - to 0.7 cm.
7.1 x 2.1 x 1.8 cm. This is a complex compound crystal of slightly smoky quartz, of unusual quality and transparency for these finds, providing a perfect setting for the jewel-like orangey-red spessartines climbing up its sides. Note the interesting triple-termination on top.
5.2 x 4.3 x 1.1 cm. Here is a fine spessartine specimen from China, with the gemmy spessartines on a matrix of pale feldspar.
1.6 x 1.5 x 1.2 cm. A fine example of a gem garnet from a deposit near the town of Loliondo, close to Serengeti National Park and 7 km from the Kenyan border, W-NW of the north end of Lake Natron. The crystals light up a pretty orangey-red color, similar to a Chinese scheelite, under good light. This crystal weighs 8 grams.
3 x 2.7 x 1.4 cm. A beautiful and complex single, floater crystal of the now-famous Brazilian Spessartines. The luster, form, and gemminess are outstanding. Ex. Charlie Key.
4 x 3.2 x 2.5 cm. These garnets have a beautiful uniform deep orange color, fine gemminess, and excellent luster, reminiscent of Jeffrey Mine specimens. Most of the Spessartines are 2-3 mm, but some actually reach .5 cm, and with their gemminess, they absolutely glow under light. The small (.5 cm) Smoky Quartz crystals are well-terminated, while the largest are contacted on some sides. Ex. Charlie Key.
6.0 x 5.4 x 2.4 cm. These Tongbei spessartines are usually on a flat microcline matrix, sometimes with smoky quartz crystals – but here, they are densely covering a euhedral microcline crystal. The spessartines are the very gemmy, orange-red, with super luster flash to them.
1.8 x 1.6 x 1.5 cm. From the thumbnail collection of Allan Young of Idaho, a large, textbook spessartine garnet, with pretty geometric epitaxial faces and perfect form. The color is a very deep wine-red. The exact locality is Toghla.
7.8 x 5.9 x 5.9 cm. It is not unusual to see spessartines on quartz or albite from Shengus, but it is unusual to see them on such a large, sharp and well-formed single crystal of albite. The spessartines, a deep wine-red color, measure to around 0.9 cm (though most are smaller). These are attractively isolated on the stark white albite. On the other side of the albite crystal are two tabular quartz crystals (there are some conventional prismatic crystals on the "underside" as well, demonstrating that this crystal was loose in the pocket, becoming a "floater" and allowing crystals to form on all sides).
7.0 x 5.2 x 5.1 cm. A classic, old-time and very showy combination specimen from the historic Elba Island of Italy. Extremely gemmy, orange spessartine garnets to 4 mm and lustrous smoky quartz crystals are aesthetically scattered on the orthoclase crystal matrix. The sharp, 4.0 x 2.2 cm, pearlescent, Carlsbad-twinned orthoclase crystal is superb. Ex. Richard Hauck Collection.
A really attractive large specimen featuring a classic Little 3 assemblage in decorative arrangement...the smoky in the middle is pristine save for one small contacted face (not damage), and is nicely accented by stark white albite and dozens of glittering little orange spessartines perched on every other species present (quartz, albite, muscovite blades) and even included within the smoky! 12.3 x 7.5 x 7.4 cm
A CLASSIC San Diego garnet, most likely dating to the Louis Spalding Sr. era of mining when the best all came out of this small mine in remote San Diego County. This is a SUPER specimen as it features a crystal which is not only large (2.5 cm) but sharply formed whereas most of them are etched and partially dissolved. Large, intact spessartines of this size are VERY scarce on the market and even in the major collections in San Diego where they are considered one of the top collectibles from the area. 6 x 6 x 5 cm
