Beautiful and complex single crystal of the now-famous Brazilian Spessartines. A floater , complete all around ! The luster, form, and gemminess are outstanding. This is an excellent miniature from a now classic find, and impresses in person.

Brilliantly spessartine-orange garnets from the famous early 1980s find at Marienfluss! Almost all were found loose and although this isn't the gemmiest of them, its on matrix...something almost unhear dof for the find! This locality is long sinc edefunct.

This impressive locality garnet specimen has a very odd point to it, and I thought it was a zircon til I saw Charlie's label with it. For the size and lustre, also, you would never guess it was from Utah! I just have not seen this quality, from the state before. Amazing, sharp, brilliantly lustrous crystal

LW103 - Spessartine Garnet on Galena - SOLD
Broken Hill, New South Wales, Australia

miniature, 4.2 x 3.5 x 2.2 cm
share specimen

ex.  Martin Lewadny

Sorry, we have no images of this specimen at present.

Not surprisingly, good Aussie Garnets from Broken Hill, found in the early to mid 1900s, are hard to come by... so this excellent Spessartine is well worth looking at. The main crystal is lustrous, 2 cm in length!, and has a deep red surface sparkle to it that pleases the eye. In addition, there are numerous small and ultra-gemmy Spessartines populating the Galena plate. A nice find!

The recent discovery of these highly etched but completely terminated Garnets created quite a splash, and you can see why. The luster and clarity are superb, which are complemented by the lovely wine-red color. It is safe to say these have become very sought-after, and this is an excellent example of this recent find because it is so gemmy whil emost are a bit thick to see the color so nicely without holding them on top of a flashlight. It is even better in person.

8.0 x 5.7 x 2.2 cm. Yet another "look" for Tongbei spessartines - these are the TOP QUALITY, truly RED crystals of unusually large size for the locality (to 0.8 cm) - with sharp, shiny faces. The deep red ones are quite hard to find compared to the orange ones. GEMMY and fine!

Spessartine, Quartz (Var: Smoky Quartz) from Wushan Spessartine Mine, Tongbei, Yunxiao Co., Zhangzhou Prefecture, Fujian Province, China [db_pics/mdpics/MD-113438a.jpg]

4.3 x 3.8 x 3.4 cm. These new Spessartines are some of the most attractive and highly displayable specimens to come out of China in the last few years. This particular piece features several lustrous, gemmy, bright orange trapezohedra with dodecahedral modifications associated with a few highly lustrous, gem quality Smoky Quartz crystals and light greenish color Muscovite crystals on Orthoclase. The color in these crystals is very attractive, and they are not at all dull or pitted. This material is becoming less and less available on the market, and keep in mind that there are only a few worldwide localities that produce this color of Spessartine in fine specimens. Bright orange Spessartine specimens are NOT easy to find these days from any locality.

7.7 x 7.0 x 4.5 cm. Spessartine garnets are not rare, but in this size they are, and go for hundreds. This one is isolated on matrix, with a quartz crystal behind it and an accenting muscovite right beside it. The spessartine measures just under 2 cm across. It has fine deep red color and sharp, lustrous faces!

10.1 x 8.9 x 6.4 cm. Tongbei is still cranking out these marvelous spessartine/smokies. Not many are of this quality, however, with the garnets ISOLATED on the contrasting feldspar, so that they jump out at you like little jewels. There are four good smokies sticking up as accents. The size here is impressive as well!

5.6 x 3.5 x 3.2 cm. Gemmy and lustrous, orange spessartine garnets richly cover matrix and preferentially coat the large, upright smoky quartz crystal on this showy and excellent specimen from the Tongbei Area of China.

2.9 x 2.3 x 1.9 cm. This would be a cute spessartine specimen for Pakistan, but for Arizona, it is really great! You do not see these Aquarius Mountain specimens around on the market. This one measures 1.5 cm, and is on a carefully-trimmed matrix. It has sharp faces, and is undamaged. In person, the color is a dark maroon.

5.4 x 2.1 x 1.6 cm. An UNUSUALLY striking example of this now classic Chinese combo - not the usual plate of small spessartines with smokies sticking up, but a single uncommonly gemmy smoky with isolated spessartines on it.
