RLKG10-191 - Smithsonite (rare yellow color) - $ 350

Smithsonite (rare yellow color) from Masua mine, Sardinia, Italy [db_pics/new2010/rlkg191a.jpg]Smithsonite (rare yellow color) from Masua mine, Sardinia, Italy [db_pics/new2010/rlkg191b.jpg]

The Masua mine in Sardinia, Italy has produced some of the most impressive and eye-catching yellow Smithsonite from any locality. This material is most likely either Cuprian and or Cadmian Smithsonite, but there's no denying the beauty and sheer impact of the electric yellow color of the material! This stone is a wonderful, bright lemon yellow color stone with a "Pear" cut. The gem itself is translucent, but I have never seen completely transparent stones from this locailty. As a matter of fact, I have only seen a handful of these gems in my life, and yellow stones are certainly hard to come by, especially anything that comes close to the intensity of this stone. The gem looks good in the photos, but even better in person. A wonderful opportunity for a collector to snag this attractive and rarely seen gem.

Gorgeous cluster of water-clear transparent scalenohedrons of Smithsonite, with the longest being 1 cm! Remarkably, two of the crystals are actually pink! These crystals are so colorless and sparkly that it actually makes it hard to photograph, so keep in mind that this terrific, aesthetic specimen is even better in person. Purchased in 1975 from Bill Larson.

A wonderful, very large single scalenohedral crystal of Cobaltian Smithsonite. The light pink color is complimented by the translucent to transparent clarity and a superb luster. When backlit or toplit, it just glows! In person it is slightly more pink than beige. Damage free, and sharp in every respect. A terrific single. Purchased in 1975 from Bill Larson.

A beautiful specimen of over a dozen modified rhombohedrons strung like pearls along creamy matrix. This Cuprian Smithsonite is one of the rarest and most sought-after varieties because of its vibrant apple-green color, and you can see why. Combine this with excellent luster, and you have an outstanding specimen of this rare habit. Purchased in 1976 from famed Tsumeb dealers , Miriam and Julius Zweibel.

Lovely cluster of sharp, striated scalenohedral crystals up to 1.6 cm in length. The crystals are remarkably gemmy, glassy, have superb luster, and show just a hint of pink . This excellent miniature is much better in person! Purchased in 1976 from the Zweibels.

Sheaths of crystals form plates and ultimately several mamillary structures (the largest is 2 cm across!) that reflect light and glow like you only dream of! It looks like they are coated with SUGAR, in person! The crystals are clear and slighly green-tinted. This is an unusual form and habit for Tsumeb...because it isn't from Tsumeb. Material from Berg Aukas was often sold OUT OF shops and dealerships in Tsumeb and the error passed on to collectors in the 1960s and 1970s. In retrospect, we know very well that this style of bundled translucent crystals is from Berg Aukas. Doesn't change its value here, or its desirability! They are equally rare specimens from an equally defunct mine. Purchased from Bill Larson in 1976

Very sharp and large (up to 1.5 cm on edge) rhombohedrons of almost colorless Smithsonite. The luster is very good, and the main crystals are virtually ding-free. Naturally, there is contact damage along the edges of the specimen, but it is trivial. The display face is pristine save for a contact on the lower-right crystal. Purchased from the Zweibels in 1976

If you look at almost anyone’s Tsumeb wish list, you would certainly find razor-sharp pink scalenodral Cobaltian Smithsonites (faintly pink, as the habit tends to be - they look more beige in pics). Elsewhere on the list you would also find a lustrous cyclic twin of Cerussite. Here we have a rich specimen with freestanding cobaltian smithsonite crystals of high translucency and good size (to 1.5 cm), with very sharp Cerussite twin (with only minor chatter on it) perched upon it! Super minaiture, and one of our favorites of the lot! BETTER IN PERSON. Purchased from the Zweibels in 1976

Attractive cluster clear, gemmy Smithsonite crystals, many of them doubly-terminated. This is a superb specimen of Smithsonite with incredible aesthetics for a miniature, and the rarest of habits - the elongated scalenohedra. Purchased from the Zweibels in 1978

This is one of the more attractive, and certainly most amazing, Smithsonites that I have ever seen. It consists of sharp red phantoms within clear scalenohedral crystals. To say that this is unusual would be putting it mildly. SMALL but BEAUTIFUL! Purchased from the Zweibels in 1979

These stunning smithsonites, a lustrous apple green in color, came out at the Denver show of 1999 with dealer Dan Belsher (now deceased) and were immediately snatched up by the top collectors. Resale prices a day later were already double and triple the starting prices from the mine, in a rather intense competitive sprint to own one. NO MORE were ever mned, of this starling quality for size, thickness, color, and translucency. To many of us, for its unique combination of qualities, this single pocket has produced the finest overall smithsonites ever to come out of Mexico. The best pieces, as with this one, had a startling 3-dimensionality and the very distinct association with beautiful hemimorphite. They were, even at the time they came out, priced like gold. There was some debate about whether the green color was caused by minute copper content, and I am not sure how that played out. Certainly, when compared to green smithsonites from other locales, these are a different, very unique hue. Today, the few you ever see come to market are usually small ; and yet cost already $4-5k. This piece has a very solid provenance in the find. California dealer Cal Graeber got most of the lot when they came out, and this piece was sold to a good collector and customer of his in San Diego, Irv Brown (it was later traded out when he switched from collecting small cabs only, to all sizes of specimens). The Graebers collect Mexican minerals themselves and kept a specimen for their collection, but this one was just a little big in its size for their suite , and so it was allowed out the door although we all considered it to be one of the 3-4 best pieces at the time. It looks good either horizontally or vertically. I personally recall that this was one of the absolute best of them, from the majority of the pocket that I saw at the time at that Denver show of 1999. I was able to obtain it down the road, and I sold it into the Stoudt collection soon after. It is the only such major example from this find that I have seen hit the market again, in almost 10 years now.. Joe Budd photos.

This is a very old piece that comes with an invoice showing that Boydston purchased it in 1959. It is a pastel robins-egg blue color, but not pale by any stretch. The color is similar to Kelly Mine, but distinct to my eye. The specimen is really aesthetic, for the contrasting rolling hillocks of smithsonite and the shadows between. The display face is remarkably pristine, and complete. The smithsonite is thick and heavy, not just the usual thin coating from here. ex Don Boydston Collection (Don passed away some time ago and his collection was sold to cover a debt to his painting framer. That worthy quickly realized its value and sold the collection, intact with all its treasures mostly from the 1950s-1970s, to a mineral dealer in about 2004 or so). A very rare, historic smithsonite of a type I had not seen from this mine.. Joe Budd photos.
