Hopeite, Smithsonite from Kabwe Mine (Broken Hill Mine), Kabwe (Broken Hill), Central Province, Zambia [db_pics/mdpics/MD-76769a.jpg]

Rare, sharp euhedral crystals of hopeite perched in the most unlikely place - inside a vug of blue smithsonite! This is very rare from Broken Hill, especially in this quality, and without the hopeite association I would have doubted it thoroughly! This was surely mined prior to the 1960s when the locale was at its peak. 4.3 x 3.5 x 3 cm

6.3 x 4.3 x 2.7 cm. A fine, 3-dimensional matrix specimen with a thick layer of green (cuprian) smithsonite atop. Like many from this new find (2009), it exhibits two-tone coloration of both apple-green and darker-green smithsonite.

Smithsonite from Choix, Mun. de Choix, Sinaloa, Mexico [db_pics/mdpics/MD-83309a.jpg]

Some intrepid miners have gone back into the old works at the classic Choix locality and begun pulling out a limited number of smithsonites in shades of pink, blue and lavender. The pink hueof this very pretty and sizeable specimen is actually much deeper and richer in person, with a shimmering, pearly luster. It is remarkable for the consistency of color over such a large surface. Really nice rounded 3-dimensional form, too. Overall, just plain aesthetic, a cut above the usual. 11 x 8 x 7 cm

Bright, lustrous, yellow, cadmium- rich, hemimorphite has formed a complete crust, with crystals clusters to .7 cm across. This deposit is best known for this species including the famous, huge plate in the Carnegie Museum which displays cadmium- rich hemimorphite after calcite. The material was found in the late 1800s and early 1900s,mostly prior to WWI, and is VERY RARE. This particular speicmen exhibits unusual lustre and sparkles as if you had dropped glitter on it! It has intense color and lustre!

These fairly recent groups are found in several different colors, but none more beautiful than the intense pink color exhibited by this specimen. THIS IS TOP QUALITY! The botryoids are extremely lustrous, translucent, and reach 2.0 cm across. Both vivid and bright!

A very weird, airy specimen with fat, striated , brownish-gray calcites on which are perched little bubbly , faintly green smithsonite crystals. Unusual, old example from Broken Hill (we surmise, by habit and associatin, and matrix...though no label survives)

A locality specimen from this classic Wisconsin locality circa mid-1800s , in all likelihood. This is a pseudomorph of Smithsonite (not hydrozincite), having replaced calcite crystals. Most pseudos from here are of the heftier species smithsonite, as this one is, and I have seen many others of them from old collections.

A VERY 3-dimensional, pristine, colorful specimen! Growing completely as a thick crust around a stalactitic matrix is this stunning, botryoidal, lustrous, deep lilac colored, smithsonite. The smithsonite is so thick, it is translucent when backlit and has the finest color for this material you could ask for. When I was a kid, I remember seeing pieces from this find, circa 1960s, in a museum, and thinking i'd never seen a more pink smithsonite before. They have found more material at this site from recent remining efforts, but few approach the luscious, waxy color of this old material. The botryoidal growths average about 2.0 cm across. The color and luster are, again, just outstanding and not easily conveyed in the photos.

PREMU-J4D09 - Smithsonite - SOLD
Choix, Sinoloa, Mexico

small cabinet, 9.5 x 8.5 x 4 cm
share specimen

Sorry, we have no images of this specimen at present.

Some intrepid miners have gone back into the old works at the classic Choix locality and begun pulling out a limited number of smithsonite specimens in shades of pink, blue and lavender! This is a large, lustrous, pearly pink specimen that really shimmers! It is among the absolute top specimens of recent finds for color, and has also unusually good sculptural form.

A beautiful, good-sized specimen with sharp pink rhombs of smithsonite to 8mm. This is an old classic smithsonite from Tsumeb. The smithsonite crystals are covering bright orange crystals of quartz to 2mm - an association I had not sene previously. Several damaged smithsonite crystals are present on the specimen but overall its in pretty good shape and nothing visually detracts. Its better in person because the quartz adds a colorful accent which has more appeal in person. Piece comes with old Conklin and Hauck labels.

Cadmium smithsonite is one of the hardest to find varieties, especially with a nice yellow color. This piece from the old world’s only real location for cadmium smithsonite and is a great example for the variety. This piece probably came out at the turn of the 1900s or from the dumps shortly thereafter. Botryoidal smithsonite covers the display surface of the piece with groups to 1.7cm. The surface of the crystals have a smooth glassy luster. Very attractive piece in the case. Richard Barstow and Hauck collection labels accompany the specimen. Barstow was the major English collector of his day, and had a noted collection.

RARE greenish smithsonite from BH! This is a sparkling example of the beautiful secondary minerals once common from Broken Hill. Apparent stalactitic growth on a black matrix has resulted in an elongated crust of light, apple green, translucent, smithsonite.

During growth, this vug obvioously had a thin septa, because smithsonite grew on both sides of this rind. The viewing side is covered in small clusters, to .6 cm across, of translucent, green, rice grain, crystals of smithsonite. However, the key to this specimen, is the subsequent growth of malachite coated, copper crystals, in a dendritic pattern, reaching 1.0 cm across. Rare and Exotic combination !

Smithsonite from Tsumeb, Namibia [db_pics/new2010/rlkg184a.jpg]Smithsonite from Tsumeb, Namibia [db_pics/new2010/rlkg184b.jpg]

Smithsonite is a relatively rare gem in facetted stones. I have seen plenty of Smithsonite cabochons, but cut gems are not very common. This stone is nearly colorless (with a very very slight yellowish-golden hue), and is slightly "hazy" which is common even in good Smithsonite gems. The stone has an Oval cut, and is a very good size, attractive gem of this material. One does not encounter many of these gems on the market, and no rare gem collection is complete without a good Tsumeb Smithsonite. Nonetheless, it is one of the very few Smithsonite stones that I have offered in the gallery in the last FOUR YEARS; that's how few of them come my way. Enjoy.
