A BEAUTIFUL, dynamic duo of lustrous, blue and pink, botryoidal smithsonite on matrix from Choix, Mexico. A lovely combination suite. 2 pieces - Miniatures 5.4 x 3.5 x 2.5 cm - largest
A SUPERB and AESTHETIC, two-sided specimen festooned with lustrous, translucent, frosted, light gray, rice-grain smithsonite crystals from Broken Hill, Australia. This is one of the finest Broken Hill smithsonites, that we have offered either at auction or in the gallery. This piece is from a respected West Coast private collection. 5.3 x 3.5 x 2.7 cm
Classic Kelly material, with a wonderful translucence. 3.1 x 2.4 x 0.9 cm
Not the prettiest smithsonite in the world, but very uncommon - a salmon-colored specimen from the old Grandview Mine locality - another Arizona surprise from the Nasser collection. 3.4 x 3.2 x 1.2 cm
These remarkable smithsonites are the best I have seen over 10- years of watching a piece or two per year surface on the market, presumably stashed years ago and now coming to light as a small lot I picked up just before Tucson. I am NOT aware of recent mining for these, nor have I ever seen quantity, though I have sold 4 -5 of them in the past decade. This piece is by far and away the best of the lot. It has a quality to it that could compete with the best cadmian-rich material from Arkansas' classic Philadelphia Mine in Rush County, and more crystal structure as you can see - it is not truly botryoidal as might be smithsonite from those other locales. 6.9 x 6 x 2.4 cm
Another superb smithsonite from any locality, but the extra value of the unusual cadmian-induced yellow color, and the locality rarity, really adds to the lure of the specimen. 7.4 x 5.3 x 2.8 cm
5.8 x 3.8 x 3.0 cm. These remarkable, translucent, muted-yellow, botryoidal, cadmium-rich smithsonites are the best I’ve seen in over 10+ years of watching a piece or two per year surface on the market, presumably stashed years ago and now coming to light. I have found out that they are from a completed dam project near Hezhou City. I am not aware of recent mining for these. All of mine came from a single source, a customer who was an engineer in China in around 1999-2000 and sent them to me. This piece has a quality to it that could compete with the best cadmian-rich material from Arkansas’ classic Philadelphia Mine in Rush County, and more crystal structure as you can see - it is not truly botryoidal as might be smithsonite from those other locales.
Over the past few years, miners have gone back into the old works at the classic Choix locality and begun pulling out a limited number of smithsonite specimens in shades of pink, blue and lavender! This is a fine, lustrous, shimmering pink specimen, a very thick (1-cm) crust on matrix. 12.2 x 5.7 x 5.0 cm
This choice miniature, surprisingly, is not from Tsumeb, but its nearby neighbor, Berg Aukas. The crystals are pastel yellow, lustrous, translucent, and appear to have some sort of stepped growth. The crystals reach 2.5 cm in length. These are often mislabelled as being from Tsumeb, by the way. 3.1 x 2.7 x 2.3 cm
A VERY 3-dimensional, pristine, colorful specimen! Growing completely as a thick crust around a stalactitic matrix is this stunning, botryoidal, lustrous, deep lilac colored, smithsonite. The smithsonite is so thick, it is translucent when backlit and has the finest color for this material you could ask for. When I was a kid, I remember seeing pieces from this find, circa 1960s, in a museum, and thinking i'd never seen a more pink smithsonite before. They have found more material at this site from recent remining efforts, but few approach the luscious, waxy color of this old material. The botryoidal growths average about 2.0 cm across. The color and luster are, again, just outstanding and not easily conveyed in the photos. 7.8 x 7.4 x 5.9 cm
A BEAUTIFUL and AESTHETIC Tsumeb specimen of lustrous and striated, azure-blue azurite crystals jauntily perched on contrasting lustrous, translucent, colorless, smithsonite rhombs. The contrast is striking. There are some small damaged crystals mixed in, but this remains a beautiful Tsumeb piece, regardless of the scattered damage. 6.3 x 4.0 x 1.9 cm
A vug of shimmering, beautiful blue-gray smithsonite from the legendary Kelly Mine. 7.4 x 5.2 x 3.9 cm
Lustrous, brown discs of smithsonite form this showy Tsumeb specimen, which features a natural arch of smithsonite crystals. The piece is nicely accented by white crystals of aragonite variety tarnowitzite. An uncommon and fine Tsumeb combination piece, even with a small bruised area. 7.5 x 6.0 x 3.4 cm
A scupltural and showy, two-sided specimen from the famous Mina Ojuela of Mexico. Sparkly, transparent, two-toned, yellow-green to gray-green adamite crystals coat the matrix of botryoidal, gray-brown smithsonite, which is revealed on the other side. Minor bruising is certainly not detracting. 5.2 x 3.4 x 2.1 cm
A showy specimen of lustrous and translucent, botryoidal smithsonite on matrix from the famous 79 Mine of Arizona. 8.0 x 8.0 x 4.0 cm
