Just look at the intense luster of this cluster of fine, smoky smithsonite crystals from Tsumeb! They look almost WET! And, the specimen is quite sculptural, with the crystals wrapped around a knob that rises from a natural "base". This is a VERY rich Tsumeb smithsonite! 7.1 x 4.9 x 4.1cm
You just do NOT see many old specimens of apple-green 79-Mine smithsonite around! There was some new mining there last year, but the limited number of specimens do not match the classic old ones for color and luster. This is THE famous apple-green color found about 10 years ago, pretty as a Granny Smith apple, with a nice shiny luster too! 8.8 x 3.0 x 2.6cm
An aesthetic, translucent crust of lustrous, botryoidal, cuprian smithsonite with two unusual geen colors from the famous 79 Mine of Arizona. Old and desirable material. Ex Ed Ruggiero Collection, who purchased this specimen in May, 1976 from dealer Chris Wright. 3.7 x 3.1 x 1.2 cm
One of the best thumbnail examples of this material I have ever seen! From old finds now, about late 1980s. 2.4 x 2.2 x 0.8 cm
Bright, lustrous, wet-looking, deep green smithsonite of the BEST color hue for the find, from just over a decade ago. This is a complete-all-around specimen of the highest quality. It is a large thumber or small miniature. Ex. Paul Harter Collection 3 x 2.2 x 1.7 cm
Quite simply one of the very best I have ever seen of this material, as it has intense color, good 3-dimensionality, and good overall aesthetics whereas most are flattish plates. This is from old material, perhaps 30-35 years old, and is brighter and more intense than contemporary material from the same mine. 8.8 x 7.3 x 3.3 cm
This smithsonite has completely pseudomorphed the original dolomite crystals, in classic curved saddle-shapes. As you can see , it wraps around the top of the specimen (lower-left photo), though i prefer the frontal view showing off the crystals with a bit more isolation and some contrast to the matrix. It is not complete on the backside, though it does have partial coverage there, but it certainly is complete on the display face and wrapping around the top. 5.2 x 3.5 x 2.2 cm
A very rare example from a famous pocket of the early 1980s, 1984 i think, which has red smithsonite of a unique hue caused by MANGANESE and NOT by the usual COBALT which gives pink smithsonite its color from other localities, and indeed from other pockets at Tsumeb as well. This is one of the most rare varieties of smithsonite and to my knowledge occured only from Tsumeb in any quality. I buy all that turn up, occasionally getting lucky and buying one mislabelled as the more common cobaltian varietal - so keep an eye out, too! 6 x 3.4 x 2.6 cm
A showy and pretty specimen of lustrous, botryoidal, pink smithsonite on banded, colorless smithsonite from Choix, Sinaloa, Mexico. This is an old-time specimen from the Richard Hauck Collection, as his label says the piece is from Alamosa, Sonora, Mexico. The true locality was still a secret, at that time. 8.0 x 6.7 x 2.5 cm
A SUPERB and AESTHETIC specimen for the locality, of lustrous and translucent, pastel-blue, rice-grain smithsonite crystals on limonite crust matrix from the very famous and old Laurium deposits of Greece. These deposits were considered ancient by the Classical Greeks! This CLASSIC, OLD specimen with a CLOTH calligraphy label on the back-dates this fine old piece. Ex Richard Hauck Collection. 9.0 x 7.5 x 3.8 cm
An aesthetic specimen of sharp, lustrous, gemmy, colorless smithsonite crystals to 5mm partially covering a stalactite of platy psilomelane from Broken Hill, Australia. Old and choice material from the oxidized zone of this world-famous mine. The tip of the stalactite is broken, but it does nicely show the growth banding. Ex Ed Ruggiero Collection, who purchased this piece in May, 1976 from Pala Properties. Ex Robert M. Rich Collection. 5.7 x 2.0 x 1.4 cm
This specimen features intricate starbursts of reticulated cerussite, perched gently upon a carpet of solid, sugary, sparkling curprian smithsonite. The color of the smithsonite is intense, set off all the more by the contrasting cerussite! I have never , in all my years of dealing Tsumeby minerla, seen this exact association before. 8.5 x 6.7 x 1.5 cm
Here is something you just do not see around on the market - an Italian smithsonite! It is polished on the display face to bring out the pretty color and rounded forms. Another very unusual specimen out of the Hauck Collection. THE COLOR IN REAL LIFE IS A RICHER, APPLE-GREEN, ABOUT 20% DEEPER THAN THE COLOR WE GOT HERE. The white glare in teh middle is intentional, to show you how lustrous and reflective the surface is, both because of the quality of the material as lapidary rough and because of the quality of the polishing job. Very old material, too - you cannot obtain it on the market today! 7.0 x 5.2 x 3.8cm
An EXCELLENT and extremely rich "turkey fat" smithsonite from the famous Philadelphia Mine of Arkansas. Cadmium-rich, sparkly, yellow smithsonite pseudomorphs after curved, saddle-shaped, dolomite crystals on siliceous limestone matrix. 5.5 x 4.4 x 4.0 cm
A BEAUTIFUL, two-sided specimen dominated by VERY GEMMY and lustrous, pink cobaltoan smithsonite crystals with smoky-gray smithsonite crystals between. The centrally located, large, doubly terminated, pink smithsonite crystal is 1.2 cm long. 4.4 x 2.7 x 2.2 cm
