This is a VERY rare piece of legrandite from the TYPE LOCALITY for the species: This is NOT Ojuela as most people think, but a small earlier find in Nuevo Leon , a completely different location and geology! This specimen is attractive in that the legrandite is contrasted against white smithsonite (this association is a dead giveaway of its true origin, aside from the unique crystal form and notably radiating habit of the legrandite clusters themselves). Overall, it is a rich piece and one of the best I have seen for sale since I first learned this fact about a decade ago, myself. Who knew?! Well, these can only get rarer with time, even more so than the comparbly plentiful Ojuela Mine material. NOTE: There are more crystals on the backside, as well! 5.4 x 4.1 x 2.1 cm
WONDERFUL bright pink color in this Tsumeb cobaltoan smithsonite! The lustrous rhombohedral crystals measure up to about 0.7 cm, and damage is limited to the periphery where the specimen was trimmed out. 3.3 x 2.6 x 2.3 cm
Take an excellent and classic Cerussite sixling, generously sprinkle it with fine gray Smithsonite rhombs, and pop it onto a nicely trimmed matrix...and you create this fabulous combination piece that really has to be seen to be believed. It is a killer! In person, it is very 3-dimensional and the underlaying cerussite sixling more obvious. A second photo shows the backside, revealing that the drapery of smithsonite is hanging over the ends of the cerussite twin. 5 x 4.5 x 4.5 cm
A gorgeous, glittering, NEON GREEN example of what we call "sugary smithsonite," from one pocket of the Tsumeb cuprian smithsonite hit some 30 years and more ago. This is the BEST color, and specimens are simpy unavailable on the market today at any price. 6 x 3.9 x 2.8 cm
An extremely colorful, fine miniature from old workings at this famous locality. The original dolomite crystals, clearly preserved in form by the pseudomorphing smithsonite, show elegant curvature. This piece stands out because they are nicely isolated on matrix instead of forming a solid coating, as is more common. Bright, neon color is due to greenockite inclusions 5.1 x 4.8 x 2.8 cm
This is one of the finest small specimens of Smithsonite I have ever seen from this great mine. The crystals on here have superb luster, good clarity, and a pearly appearance that just draws you in. Each and every one of the crystals is razor sharp. This is truly a magnificent thumbnail. 2.4 x 2.1 x 1.5 cm
An intrepid miner has gone back into the classic Choix works and begun taking out smithsonites in a range of colors from pink, to blue, to purple. This is a large specimen with a crust of shimmering pink smithsonite wrapped around matrix. 10.8 x 5.8 x 5.2 cm
A GORGEOUS miniature of the prized smithsonite from the Kelly, an unusual silvery-blue color, with the highest luster you could ask for, and a bit of contrasting matrix showing here and there that adds even more to the attractiveness. Stunning! 4 x 3.2 x 2.2 cm
A showy and excellent, folded like a wing, specimen of lustrous, botryoidal, lavender smithsonite on matrix from Choix, Sinaloa, Mexico. Ex Marty Lewadny Collection of Winnipeg, Canada. Old material. This piece comes with a Dr. David Garske label, a dealer from Rapid City, South Dakota. 9.0 x 5.9 x 3.7 cm
A SUPERB and extremely rich "turkey fat" smithsonite from the famous Monte Cristo Mine of Arkansas. Cadmium-rich yellow smithsonite coats curved, saddle-shaped, dolomite crystals on limestone matrix. COVERAGE on BOTH sides! The back is solid - the front is even better in my opinion with ISOLATED and contrasted crystals 3-D on the matrix. This is one of the best examples of the material I have seen for sale. Ed Ruggiero self-collected collected this prized specimen in 1975. 9.0 x 7.1 x 5.8 cm
A very sculptural and showy specimen of translucent, botryoidal, kelly-blue smithsonite with interesting white smithsonite bands from the famous Kelly Mine of New Mexico. The smithsonite is a 1/2 inch thick crust on limestone matrix. Ex Ed Ruggiero Collection, who purchased this piece from miner/dealer, Tony Otero, in 1975. 7.4 x 7.2 x 5.7 cm
A showy and extremely rich specimen covered with lustrous, translucent smithsonite rhombs to 1.0 cm on matrix from Tsumeb. The rhombs are mostly light pink. 10.0 x 7.6 x 7.0 cm
That is right, folks, there have actually been a small find of specimens at the classic old 79 Mine, as a couple of miners have gone back in there. I have not seen any more quality stuff lately, though, since the first batch came out a year or so ago. This plate of smithsonite is a velvety, lustrous deep moss green - very pretty - with accents of calcite. 6.8 x 6.7 x 2.3 cm
An intrepid miner has gone back into the old works at the classic Choix locality and begun pulling out a limited number of smithsonite specimens in shades of pink, blue and lavender! This is a relatively large specimen, a very thick crust, of a blue that is reminiscent of the Kelly Mine. 8.1 x 6.7 x 4.4 cm
An intrepid miner has gone back into the old works at the classic Choix locality and begun pulling out a limited number of smithsonite specimens in shades of pink, blue and lavender! Fine luster on this one. 5.9 x 4.7 x 2.5 cm
