Smithsonite (Var: Cuprian Smithsonite) from 79 Mine (79th Mine; Seventy-Nine Mine; Seventy-Nine property; McHur prospect), Chilito, Hayden area, Banner District, Dripping Spring Mts, Gila Co., Arizona, USA [db_pics/mdpics/MD-279093a.jpg]

9.3 x 7.2 x 4.3 cm. This is a very dramatic, rounded small cabinet piece with great dimensionality, a uniform deep green color that is towards the darker and finer end of the spectrum for the find, and one of the largest mounds of smithsonite I have from the find (2009). It has no damage on that display face, only contacting around the bare periphery. This is a dramatic, colorful specimen for the find. For a piece this size, the color is unusually consistent, as well.

11.4 x 7.2 x 7.3 cm. A very 3-dimensional and large specimen with unusual crystallization, in that the normally rounded smithsonites are subdivided, and city-scaped on close examination. This piece has overall a nice apple-green color, with some color zonation darker and lighter present. A second generation of drusy smithsonite was deposited in the crevasses and cracks between the larger growths, making for an increased sense of depth to the piece.

5.3 x 3.3 x 3.3 cm. Very glassy and striated, light gray smithsonite rhombs cover the mounded matrix of galena and bornite on this aesthetic specimen from the Tsumeb Mine. The natural arch of smithsonite is striking. No damage to the front of the specimen. Ex. Wes Parker Collection.

4.6 x 3.2 x 2.8 cm. A very nice three-sided combination miniature from the Tsumeb Mine. The mounded piece is totally covered on one side with super-sparkly, gemmy, emerald-green dioptase crystals. The dioptase crystals are nicely discrete on the other side and are beautifully accented by a 6 mm calcite rhomb. This side and the base reveal the silky lustre, pink cobaltoan smithsonite botryoids of the matrix. Two sides are further accented with contrasting pastel-green duftite. Ex. Wes Parker Collection.

11.5 x 4.8 x 2.1 cm. A beautiful, old-time, cabinet smithsonite specimen from the ancient mines at Lavrion (Laurium), Greece. Lustrous, translucent, waxy lustre, powder-blue smithsonite botryoids cover both sides of this beautiful plate. The Laurium mines were called "ancient" in the time of the Classical Greeks. Ex. Robert Whitmore Collection.

11.0 x 7.9 x 5.5 cm. Three glassy, sharp, amber wulfenite crystals to 1.3 cm are aesthetically clustered on sculptural cabinet matrix composed mainly of sparkly, microbotryoidal cobaltoan smithsonite. This is a large piece with good aesthetics and nice color contrasts: The piece is beautifully accented with complimentary, pretty malachite and a rich dusting of smaller wulfenite crystals. Ex. Rob Smith Collection, a noted Tsumeb specialist.

Rosasite, Smithsonite from Silver Bill Mine, Costello Mine group (Costello claims), Gleeson, Turquoise District (Courtland-Gleeson District), Dragoon Mts, Cochise Co., Arizona, USA [db_pics/mdpics/MD-283221b.jpg]

4.8 x 4.1 x 2.4 cm. A rare and attractive rosasite from this small and seldom-seen locality. A Harold Urish note accompanying the piece says he self-collected it in 1988 (as he was pushing 70 years old) through the so-called Mystery Tunnel. This is, therefore, more recent than I had thought, having previously seen anything from here only in older collections. The matrix is sparkling white, microcrystallized smithsonite on rock. Ex. Harold Urish Collection.

5.7 x 5.2 x 4.7 cm. A vug hosting very nicely colored, deep blue smithsonite. The smithsonite forms as botryoidal (rounded) aggregates, and here has an extremely good luster. I like that it is in its natural pocket cavity, in this case, and not trimmed out further. Ex. Harold Urish Collection.

5.2 x 4.3 x 2.3 cm. A beautiful, intensely green smithsonite colored by copper content. Such specimens were considered extremely rare and desirable, and found only a few times at this mine in its history. Self-collected by Harold Urish in 1995 on an underground trip in this mine (while he was well into his 70s in age). Superb color intensity on this piece. Ex. Harold Urish Collection.

7.3 x 5.7 x 5.1 cm. This is a superb specimen of high quality. The color is perfect robin’s-egg blue, the lustre is satiny and bright, and the smithsonite is slightly translucent. This is carving grade. And, it is a beautiful specimen with 3-dimensional hillocks and 360-degree display. From the well-known Tucson collection of 40-year collector, Harold Urish.

9.0 x 6.2 x 3.8 cm. A gorgeous vug of riveting, translucent, powder-blue smithsonite from the great classic location of Lavrion, Greece. These blue smithsonites came out many years ago and were the best blues available in the 1800s and early 1900s, prior to the Kelly mine material coming out. They are still highly desired for their soft color and old world history. Ex. Richard Hauck Collection.

A nearly unique specimen from a very small pocket of this material collected in the early 90's, where MOST of the smithsonite was botryoidal but a few came out with crystals, like this one. EXTREMELY RARE and desirable arizona smithsonite! 4.6 x 2.3 x 1.3 cm

This gorgeous, silky smithsonite specimen has excellent color, lustre, and an unusual 3-dimensionality to it. It is superb for the size ! The shape is reminiscent to me of the chair of the Lincoln Memorial. I first saw this one around 1991 and I have always loved this specimen the most for its unique form even though I have since seen bigger and pricier pieces for sale. I had promised to post it for a friend and have been severely remiss, so here it is in a natives update, but it should get noticed all the more I hope! 12.1 x 7.0 x 5.0 cm
