Smithsonite, Baryte from Kelly Mine, Magdalena District, Socorro Co., New Mexico, USA [db_pics/mdpics/MD-250270a.jpg]

20.9 x 11.0 x 10.0 cm. A fine, sculptural large cabinet specimen from the Kelly Mine of New Mexico. The large vugs and flutes of this striking piece are covered with baryte blades, which in turn are coated with two generations of smithsonite. The first generation smithsonite in the vug interiors is classic, light Kelly blue and really sparkles, while the second generation smithsonite on the flute edges is powder-blue and has a bit less lustre and sparkle. This is classic, older Kelly combination material and the base of the silicified limestone matrix is richly covered with baryte blades.

4.5 x 3.3 x 2.1 cm. A beautiful Smithsonite from Tsumeb featuring several gemmy, sharp, scalenohedral crystals on matrix. The crystals themselves are not especially large, but they have great form and aesthetics. Smithsonite from Tsumeb is one of the most classic species from what is arguably the greatest locality in the history of minerals. Ex. Brian Kosnar Collection.

4.5 x 3.2 x 1.6 cm. A fine and extremely rich "turkey fat" smithsonite from the Philadelphia Mine of Arkansas. Intensely yellow, cadmium-rich smithsonite pseudomorphs after curved, saddle-shaped, dolomite crystals cover the sculptural, siliceous limestone matrix plate. Highly representative of the species and locale but intense in color. Classic material. Ex. Wes Parker Collection.

4.8 x 4.0 x 3.5 cm. A rare and rich specimen of very sharp, lustrous and gemmy, metallic-pink manganoan smithsonite rhombs from the Tsumeb Mine. Manganoan smithsonite is a much less common pink smithsonite varietal from this locale compared to cobaltoan smithsonite. The very distinctive metallic-pink color and very sharp rhombohedral, translucent crystals differentiate these from the much more common pink cobaltoan smithsonites when seen by the trained eye. Seldom available, as these pieces came from a small, one-time find in the early-mid 1980s. Ex. Wes Parker Collection.

4.4 x 3.4 x 3.0 cm. “Rice-grain" smithsonite crystals on aurichalcite are amongst the most desirable combination specimens from the Kelly Mine. Gemmy, tiny, rice-grain smithsonite crystals are lavishly scattered on the gorgeous, powder-blue, banded, botryoidal aurichalcite lining the striking vug in gossan matrix. A very fine miniature from this locale. Ex. Jaime Bird Collection.

12.8 x 8.9 x 5.8 cm. A 3-dimensional, impressive, and very large specimen with "rice-grain" smithsonite crystalls (rare from the mine), perched atop the lovely pastel blue color that made the Kelly famous when it was in its heyday, for carving rough. The thickness of the rind is 1/2 inch in most places.

5.8 x 4.4 x 3.5 cm. This botryoidal specimen exhibits the finest, "Kelly blue" color, luster, and translucence, to be found from this venerable old mine. Specimens of this quality and color are increasingly rare in dealer stocks. Much of it eventually drifts over to lapidary use, as the carving value of pieces like this with the best color and thick rind probably exceeds the specimen value.

3.4 x 3.3 x 1.4 cm. A fine miniature plate covered with glassy, gemmy, colorless smithsonite scalenohedrons from the Tsumeb Mine. Some of the crystals are doubly terminated, including the largest, at 1.1 cm. Classic material from this renowned locale. Ex. Wes Parker Collection.

5.9 x 3.2 x 2.7 cm. Beautiful, kelly-blue smithsonite botryoids with excellent translucence and "wet-look" lustre form a sculptural and fine specimen from the Kelly Mine of New Mexico. The smaller botryoids are the "rice-grain" varietal. Very highly representative of the species and locale.

2.5 x 2.5 x 1.4 cm. A superb thumbnail of a cluster of extremely gemmy and lustrous, emerald-green dioptase crystals to 1.1 cm aesthetically perched on a thin wedge of sparkly light sea-green smithsonite microcrysals and beautifully accented with a couple of colorless calcite rhombs. This very interesting Tsumeb combination specimen is from the Dr. Fred Pough Collection and is older material.

5.9 x 4.5 x 3.1 cm. A very fine, green cuprian smithsonite from the Tsumeb Mine. Cuprian smithsonite, such as this, is one of the most sought-after smithsonite varietals from this renowned mine. Gemmy and lustrous, apple-green rhombs surround a darker green area on this richly lined vug lined with a starkly contrasting white crust on the very sculptural matrix. Choice material from this world-class locality.

6.0 x 4.2 x 4.0 cm. A very sculptural vug in sturdy gossan matrix is filled with sparkly, multi-hued green smithsonite microcrystals in bubbly, botryoidal form. This fine piece is from the famed mines at Laurium, Greece and is probably old. A very highly representative specimen from this historic locale. The Laurium mines were called "ancient" in the time of the Classical Greeks. Ex. Wes Parker Collection.

10.8 x 6.2 x 5.8 cm. Leadville is well known for its Silver deposits, but the secondary ore minerals from the Sherman mine are beloved by Colorado collectors. Here we have a great secondary ore association specimen. This piece features a nice coverage of greenish-blue Smithsonite spherical aggregates which are associated with a few golden Baryte crystals on the reverse side. There is also some minor associated Malachite and Calcite on the piece as well. I know its not what you typically expect from a Colorado specimen, and this material is rare from this mine. This specimen is close to 30 years old as it was collected in 1980 and came from the collection of noted Colorado collector and dealer, Richard A. Kosnar. From the K-22-6 Area of the mine.

An excellent cluster of translucent off-white intergrown smithsonite rhombs with a matte-finish from Tsumeb. Actually, white smithsonite from Tsumeb is fairly uncommon. Ost crystals here average about 1 cm, which is of fair size. 4.7 x 3.9 x 2.5 cm
