An excellent, lustrous and translucent yellow botryoidal cadmium smithsonite from Tsumeb. Cadmium smithsonite is the rarest variety of smithsonite from Tsumeb and this is a good one. 5.0 x 3.8 x 2.5 cm

4.6 x 3.5 x 2.4 cm. Riveting turquoise-blue rosasite botryoids are aesthetically strewn across the very vuggy matrix covered with tiny, scintillating, smithsonite crystals on this excellent old-time piece from the less well-known Mystery Tunnel at Gleeson. The spherules reach 4 mm and are actually intergrown masses of rosasite crystals in radial form. Last ore production from this small mine was in 1942. Ex. Jaime Bird collection.

2.9 x 1.6 x 0.8 cm. A beautiful Tsumeb toenail from the Jaime Bird Collection. A sharp, doubly terminated, gem smithsonite scalenohedron is studded with smaller smithsonite needles, porcupine needle style. The big crystal is slightly smoky and some faces are beautifully striated.

Kelly Mine smithsonites just get harder and harder to find. This one is a very rich piece with fine color, a knob that formed around a thin piece of matrix in the pocket, giving it pleasing 3-dimensionality. That combined with the top color make this an EXCEPTIONAL piece. 6.9 x 5.4 x 5.1 cm

3.7 x 3.1 x 1.8 cm. Berg Aukas is one of the most famous Smithsonite localities in the world. I have seen a wide variety of habits and colors of Smithsonites from this great locality, and this piece is no exception. It features a few sharp, very gemmy, beautiful green color modified rhombohedra of Smithsonite sitting atop beige-white color Willemite on matrix. Ex. Richard Kosnar Collection.

A very unusual Tsumeb smithsonite featuring pretty sea-foam green smithsonite that has covered both sides of the stalactitic iron-rich matrix rock. Interesting how it indicates the presence of both zinc and iron in this pocket at different times, two of the many metallic minerals present at the incredibly rich Tsumeb locality. This piece is really quite elegant. 7 x 3.5 x 1.5 cm

10.5 x 6.4 x 6.2 cm. A classic and very showy, cave-like vug lined with three-toned blue, botryoidal smithsonite in a cabinet-sized silicified limestone matrix from the Kelly Mine of New Mexico. The hole out of the back of the vug is very interesting. Ex. Wesley Stark Collection.

6.7 x 2.8 x 1.8 cm. Four bright blue-green tufts of acicular crystals of the copper-mineral aurichalcite, from the 79 Mine in Arizona. The crystals are like little starbursts of fine needles aesthetically perched on the sturdy, layered, vuggy, box-work matrix. Scintillating hemimorphite microblades festooned on the matrix are a super accent. The small vug lined with olive-green smithsonite crystals is a real bonus and is very uncommon. Ex. Jaime Bird Collection.

14.3 x 8.4 x 4.4 cm. This is a rich, multilayered smithsonite specimen with at least 2 if not 3 separate depositions of subtly different color and texture. Kelly smithsonites of this classic blue color are among the most treasured of US classics, and this mine is famous around the world for its blue smithsonite. It is a large piece, very colorful and attractive. The matrix is a hard rock material, indicative generally of older finds here. Ex. Harold Urish Collection.

8.5 x 6.4 x 6.3 cm. This is a superb specimen from the Harold Urish collection. It is 3-dimensional and gorgeous in person. It has no damage on the display face except the bare periphery. It has a rich, vivid, dark green color caused by copper content. This material was found just once in this quality, in the mid-1990s, and sold at Tucson rapidly. Similar material was found again recently, after a long hiatus, but none had the even, saturated hue of this specimen.

1.4 x 1.0 x 0.9 cm. An old specimen in a micromount box which hosts several rich pockets of pearly white, sub-mm fraipontite crystals associated with green smithsonite. This is a rare zinc aluminosilicate species. Ex. John White Collection.
