A crust of translucent, lustrous, apple green, botryoidal, smithsonite has grown almost totally around a thin septa of matrix. The largest botryoid reaches 1.0 cm across. This is an unusually large and pristine specimen from the best find to date here of this material, dug by George Stevens and George Godas in the late 1980s. I value this highly, as among the best of American smithsonite pockets.

4JD39 - Smithsonite - $ 250 SOLD
Kelly Mine, Magdelena, Socorro County, New Mexico, USA
miniature, 4.1 x 2.6 x 1 cm

Sorry, we have no images of this specimen at present.

The most famous Smithsonite locality in the world produced this beautiful light blue crust of large to very fine botryoids. The luster and color is EXCELLENT on this well-balanced piece that stands out as one of the most attractive mini's I have seen. With the Kelly Mine long closed, and specimens much in demand, grab this one while you can

4JD47 - Smithsonite on Aurichalcite - $ 250 SOLD
Kelly Mine, Magdelena, Socorro County, New Mexico, USA
miniature, 3.6 x 2.6 x 1.6 cm

Sorry, we have no images of this specimen at present.

The highly sought-after combination from the world-famous Kelly Mine in New Mexico. Lustrous light blue smithsonite on top of rich aurichalcite gives these specimens a beauty all their own. No longer available from the mine, these are getting harder and harder to find. This one is darned near unique for the balance and aesthetics of the association!

Just say the word "Kelly" and visions of superb blue Smithsonites pop into the mind. And here is one of them! You can see just by looking at it that it is a really old piece of style quite different than the more contemporary botryoidal growths we see on the market. These crystals, affectionately called "rice-grains" , are often mentioned in old accounts of the Kelly but in practice are exceedingly hard to find for sale or in collections in the modern day. This one has superb LARGE "rice-grain" crystals with wonderful blue color and a lustrous velvety texture. It has a long history and is just waiting for its next lucky home: It originated in the collection of noted dealer WC Hart (see MR vol. 12 pages 135-136 from 1981 for notes on his career) who was an avid collector and dealer in the 1920s and 1930s. It passed from his daughter to collector John Almquist, in 1981. Then, it went to dealer Dave Crawford through a trade, and he eventually sold it to John Barlow in whose collection it resided til 1998 when I obtained it and sold the piece to the previous owner - it hasn't been on the public market, to my knowledge, since the time of Hart himself.

A fine, 3-dimensional matrix specimen with a thick layer of green (cuprian) smithsonite atop. This is a good large miniature or small cab. Like many from this new find, it exhibits two-tone coloration of both apple-green and darker-green smithsonite

Like many from this new find, this piece exhibits two-tone coloration of both apple-green and darker-green smithsonite. It is mounded very 3-dimensionally on the matrix with a thick layer of green (cuprian) smithsonite. This is a good large miniature or small cab. One photo (on left, top) shows the piece standing vertically and showing off more curving smithsonite growths, so it looks less in width from this angle than it actually is. The second (right) photo shows the specimen more head-on.

A beautiful, 3-dimensional, richly covered matrix with thick smithsonite of medium green color fo rthis find. Not too dark, not too light! It has a rich sparkle to it, as well, that is unusual.

A fine, 3-dimensional matrix specimen with an unusually choice and thick layer of green (cuprian) smithsonite atop. Like many from this new find, it exhibits two-tone coloration of both apple-green and darker-green smithsonite. The play of the colors in reflecting light makes them most unusual, and I have not seen green smithsonite before which exhibits this color play on the same piece. this specimen has very robust, large, botryoidal smithsonite at its peak.

This is an elongated plate with the most sparkly smithsonite I have seen from the find, literally as if you dropped sugar on top of the big botryoidal balls. Like many from this new find, this piece exhibits two-tone coloration of both apple-green and darker-green smithsonite. It is mounded very 3-dimensionally on the matrix with a thick layer of green (cuprian) smithsonite. The color is INTENSE in the darker zones, more what you expect for the finest wavellite and not for green smithsonite. I need to note that the piece was embedded in a rather large and rough matrix block, and so it was extracted by sawing rather than careful hand trimming: thus, the edges show in some places traces of the saw cut though they have been "roughed up" a little to try to hide that fact. Nevertheless, it displays well and again has fantastic, intense color. If it does not sell here as is, I will trim out the large miniature in the center and raise the price on the resulting piece, as its worth it...

A rich and VERY LARGE plate for the find, of high quality, consistent apple-green color, and superb display aesthetics! The photos pretty much say it all…Cuprian smithsonite in this size from ANY locale must be very rare, and from the few previous finds at this location I have seen little of this magnitude (and then at much higher prices, as well).

A very 3-dimensional and large specimen with unusual crysatllization, in that the normally rounded smithsonites are subdivided, and cityscaped, on close examination. This piece has overall a nice apple-green color, with some color zonation darker and lighter present. A second generation of drusy smithsonite was deposited in the crevasses and cracks between the larger growths, making for an increased sense of depth to the piece.

Aurichalcite with Smithsonite - Kelly Mine, Magdalena, Socorro County, New Mexico, USA

This is one of the nicest aurichalcite specimens I have seen from Kelly. It is composed of a series of parallel growth, stalactitic botryoids, to 2.0 cm in length, with luster, and a wonderful rich, blue green color. The characteristic defining the location, is the single, lustrous, translucent, sky blue, rice grain crystal of smithsonite, measuring .6 cm across. Super!

This is a competition quality smithsonite specimen for several reasons. On one side are botryoids and rice grain crystals that are lustrous, translucent, and have the most incredible pastel kelly blue color. The largest botryoid reaches 2.0 cm across. On the back side is a stalk of smithsonite along with bow ties that links the rice grains together. These even display apparent fortification-like growth, similar to agates. All in all, this is a superb and aesthetic specimen! It is not your usual flat plate!

Cuprian Smithsonite - 79 Mine, Gila County, Arizona, USA

On a matrix of silicified, white, limestone, is emplaced a crust of very lustrous, translucent, bright apple green, botryoids of cupro-smithsonite, to 1.2 cm across. The high luster and glowing color make this specimen elegant. The specimen’s quality and rarity make it valuable but it happens also to be quite beautiful and green smithsonite is very rare in the world, and from the USA in particular. Found in the late 1980s
