80A - Skutterudite - $ 3200 SOLD Bou Azzer, Morocco cabinet, 12.2 x 9.4 x 6.6 cm ex. Dr. Edward David
This is an important specimen of unusually large size and visual impact, consisting of splendent, metallic-gray, dodecahedral skutterudite crystals in a massive 3-dimensional cluster. This is a rare cobalt arsenate. The crystals reach 1.0 cm on a side and appear to have grown in a roseate pattern. As this large plate is covered with fine skutterudite crystals, its importance and value cannot be trivialized. You just seldom see ANY good skutterudite for sale anymore from this classic locale, beyond miniatures with damage.
JWHITE-09 - Skutterudite on native Bismuth - $ 400 Schneeberg, Saxony, Germany miniature, 5.4 x 3.6 x 3.6 cm ex. John White
A solid mass of very heavy, metallic ore is host for sharp crystals of smaltite, the cobalt-rich variety of skutterudite. Classic old material! This is a good display piece with crystals to 4mm including a sharp cube, atop. I have chosen not to clean this piece of its acucmulated patina, though it is of course easy to make it cleaner and bright-looking with chemicals. Note the attractive wavy growths of native bismuth, on which the crystals sit.
JWHITE-67 - Chloanthite (Ni-Skutterudite) - $ 400 SOLD Schneeberg, Saxony miniature, 4.3 x 3.0 x 2.6 cm ex. John White
A very heavy specimen of solid skutterudite, from a CLASSIC and important locality for the species! These are old specimens, some to the 1800s, and now rare on the market. Technically this former species is now regarded as an arsenic-deficient variety of Nickel-Skutterudite or simply as a synonym for Nickel-Skutterudite.. In any case, this is an excellent example of the nickel species, well crystallized, and a beautiful display quality miniature. The complex form of these crystals, and their bright lustre, mark them as German apart from modern finds in Morocco.
K323 - Erythrite with Skutterudite - $ 1800 SOLD Bou Azzer Mine, Atlas Mtns., Morocco miniature, 5.7 x 3.7 x 3.0 cm ex. Charlie Key
A very elegant, deep purple cluster of solid erthrite with minute crystals of skutterudite mixed in, from the late 1960s finds that set a new standard for this species aside from the old localities in Germany. This piece is made up entirely of crystallized rosettes, grown one upon the other to form this sculptural shape. Specimens of this style, from the original find, are recognizably different from modern specimens found in 2002-2004. There is usually some historical value to be added in to the price of these specimens when they turn up, but we have instead priced this as we would a similarly-sized modern specimen: based simply on quality, size, and aesthetics.
LC418 - SKUTTERUDITE var. CHLOANTHITE on QUARTZ - SOLD Schneeberg, Saxony, Germany miniature, 5 x 4 x 2 cm
Extremely sharp crystals to 7mm, combined with unusually fine pseudocubic crystallography, makes this specimen a VERY choice miniature for the locality. These were collected, I am told, between the 1880s and 1920s. Most such specimens are rather lumpy, less rich, or simply have more poorly developed crystals. For the market, this is a very special and choice specimen....as you'd expect from the German suite of this particular collection, which was clearly its pride and joy.

7 x 6.2 x 2.7 cm. A very nice showy plate of intergrown crystals. The silvery crystals have very good metallic luster, and well-defined crystal faces on the display side (massive on the back). The largest of these Skutterudites reaches 2 cm on edge.
MD-130262 - Skutterudite - - Archived Bou Azzer, Bou Azzer District, Tazenakht, Ouarzazate Province, Souss-Massa-Draâ Region, Morocco miniature, 4.1 x 4.0 x 3.0 cm.

6.5 x 6.3 x 4.2 cm. Skutterudite crystals aesthetically perched high on matrix and consist of splendent, silver colored, complex forms to 2.0 cm in length. There are a few milky white quartz crystals, to 1.0 cm in length.
MD-169970 - Skutterudite (Var: Smaltite) - - Archived Schneeberg District, Erzgebirge, Saxony, Germany small cabinet, 6.0 x 4.2 x 4.2 cm.
6.0 x 4.2 x 4.2 cm. This is a mesmerizing specimen that is so unlike most smaltite that we see from Germany or Morocco. Smaltite is the arsenic deficient variety of Skutterudite, now stripped of its species name. Its habit is so radically different from the "classical" style of lumpy crystals on a massive ore, with no contrast. Instead, we have this cityscape arrangement of crystals, reticulated (twinned?!) and complexly intergrown, arranged inside a natural cavity of fluorite and barite matrix. Its long history surely started in the mid to late 1800s and then we can track it from within the collection of noted collector Albert Petereit (1860-1917), who sold it to A.F. Holden (1863-1913) in June of 1910. He donated his substantial mineral collection to the Harvard Mineralogical Museum in 1911. In Harvard it remained until the 1960s when it was traded out to Phil Sclaisi, in whose collection it stayed for some 40 years.

3.25 x 3 x 2.1 cm. Intermixed with silvery crystals of skutterudite are diverging blades of lustrous, magenta colored erythrite, to .7 cm across. This combination and style is characteristic of material found here 20-plus years ago, and regarded as "classic.” Ex. Martin Zinn Collection.
