Silver on matrix from New Nevada Mine, Batopilas, Chihuahua, Mexico [db_pics/pics/17edd108dc.jpg]

A very rare solid matrix specimen of twinned silver crystals, from the famous locality in Mexico that has produced these in spurts over the years. This one was likely mined in the late 1960s and was in the Wayne Thompson and John Whitmire Collections.John was a major dealer in Mexican minerals and had a fine collection of the Mexican classics. Wayne just collected good silvers for awhile. This is significant because of the richness of the silver, the solidity of the mass of silver on matrix, and the sheer overall size. Few large matrix silvers were recovered.

This is really quite an amazing specimen. It is composed of many, many cubic Silver crystals throughout the specimen. CUBIC crystals are rare, especially for Michigan. Note also a few other habits mixed in (dodec?). They all have a deep burnished color and fine natural patina with luster. Such good crystallization is rare, making this quite the extraordinary thumb.

The pics tell you all you need to know about how cool this Silver is. Its not the largest thubmnail, but it DOES stand out in a case, no doubt. From my old mentors Neal and Chris Pfaff to Marilyn in the 1980s. Ex Ron Sohn collection.

This is a terrific silver specimen featuring a single stout 3 cm crysatl in the middle! The luster and patina are amazingly bright (and natural, I might add); and the thick modified crystals that compose it give the specimen both a visual and geometric impact. Such a high quality from such an important location makes this a true killer. And, it is much better in person as these darned things are hard to photograph!

A large, solid specimen of pure native silver, with very bright and sharp crystals flaring from the top of the specimen like flames. It is dramatic in person! This piece is complete on both sides. It masses 137 grams. Most such specimens are old pieces from the heyday of the distract, mid 1800s to early 1900s, though sadly there is no way now to be sure when this came out. It is said to be from the Cliff mine, by attribution to style and habit. ex Ed David collection

An unusually robust, arborescent silver specimen from this mine, composed of sharp silver crystals like a forest of evergreen trees, rising dramatically from a thicker silver base. Overall a very impressive display specimen, particularly so as the mine is known for rather frilly and wispy silvers compared to this more massive "beast." Old specimen, from the Chuck Leavitt Collection.

A very stylized, elegant silver specimen featuring seemingly wispy ropes of silver shooting out from the matrix. However, they are quite solid and robust. This is a great example of the twisted silver ropes which came out of here in the late 1990s. , and rare on the nice contrasting matrix. Superb for its size, these often tend to be too sparsely formed on clunky matrix, or too intermeshed to have great aesthetics.

An elegant, robust "rope silver" crystal from finds of the early 2000s at this Chinese locale. If it were from Saxony or Kongsberg, and it does kind of look like silvers from those locales, you could expect double the price simply on historical favoritism points. The Chinese material is relatively undervalued, thus

This is a VERY long, elegant, robust "rope silver" crystal from finds of the early 2000s at this Chinese locale. If it were from Saxony or Kongsberg, and it does kind of look like silvers from those locales, you could expect double or more on the price simply based on historical favoritism points. The Chinese material is relatively undervalued, thus. This is a slender wire, but so large and long that it has a lot of impact. If from old Saxony, you could multiple the price by a factor of 3-4, as China silver is lower valued compared to the old classics and yet ropes like this are nearly identical

This specimen is one of the most elegant examples I have seen in a long time, from the famous early 1980s finds at the New Nevada Mine in the old Batopilas silver District. These specimens were brought to market by John Whitmire at the time. Steven Sinotte was a collector and part-time dealer at the old Desert Inn when they came out, and obtained this for his collection in the early picks. It is elegantly balanced, on just the right amount of calcite matrix pedestal. It shows a CLASSIC, and very fine, herringbone pattern of crystallized spinel-twinned silver crystals interlinked with one another. The crystal cluster is robust, not fragile and "bendy" as are so many from these finds (particularly from silvers found a few years later). This specimen was pictured in the Mineralogical Record article on the find, in 1982: Mineralogical Record vol 12, May-June, page 178, figure 6. It has remained in his collection, and that of his wife, noted glassmaker Rebecca Stewart, ever since a few weeks after it was mined in the early 1980s. Comes with a lucite base for custom display
