BEM-19 - Siderite on Quartz - $ 3000 SOLD Redruth, Cornwall, England miniature, 4.1 x 3.5 x 2.9 cm
A superb competition-level miniature featuring a fanspray of thin, translucent siderite crystals to 4 cm, perched upon a knoll of sparkling white quartz! The aesthetics are great for any siderite from any locality, and the significance of the large crystals from this particular historic location is also a bonus to the intrinsic quality for the species. From the miniature rarities suite of Lawrence Conklin. Almost certainly found in the mid to late 1800s and remarkably, despite its apparent fragility, preserved intact since. This is complete all around and displays from both sides.
CR30 - Goyazite , Siderite - $ 300 SOLD Rapid Creek, Yukon, Canada thumbnail,
Smaller crystals but on one of the few pieces showing such nice isolation on contrasting matrix!
CR32 - Goyazite, Siderite - $ 375 SOLD Rapid Creek, Yukon, Canada thumbnail,
Sharp, wonderfully isolated crystals on one of the very few pieces showing such nice isolation on contrasting matrix! A very fine specimen for the overall quality of the crystals and their displayability!
D10-89 - Siderite var. Sphaerosiderite on Barite - $ 1800 Herja Mine, Kisbanya, Baia Mare, Maramures Co., Romania small cabinet, 9.5 x 6.0 x 4.9 cm ex. Robert Whitmore
Once considered its own species, this sphaerosiderite is now considered to be a microcrystalline, botryoidal variety of siderite. It is classic and unique material, though, and comes at its best from this old mine in Romania. This specimen is complete all around, and is a gorgeous and rich example of both the species variety, and of the classic association from this particular mine. I have seen these pop up from time to time in old collections, but never one so good as this one.
GALENA - with SIDERITE - SOLD PRICE: On request cabinet, 10 x 6 x 4 cm
This is a remarkable, MUSEUM-QUALITY cabinet piece of SHARP, lustrous crystals of classic German galena to over 2.5 cm across, perched on golden siderite and white quartz! The crystals are really quite brilliant - better in person and set off nicely against the matrix! This locality is of course classic for the world-reknowned galenas, but so few have survived since the 1800's, and of those only a handful are truly large and significant specimens. Those who have seen this in person at the Denver show ranked it as one of the finest known, and certainly as the best on the private collector market today. Admittedly, it sold at the show right off, but I wanted to post these photos here to show off how good this collection is, and how passionate about his German suite he was.
GHA3 - Apatite on Quartz with Siderite - $ 350 SOLD Panasqueira, Portugal small cabinet, 6.6 x 5 x 3.8 cm
A very attractive specimen featuring a 1.75-cm blue-purple apatite hanging off the side of a quartz cluster. The apatite is translucent and very lustrous. The piece is pristine on the front though it has a natrual break and partial reheal on the BACK of the larger quartz termination. The piece sits nicely on its own!
GHA4 - Arsenopyrite with Siderite - $ 2000 SOLD Panasqueira, Portugal cabinet, 11.3 x 7 x 4.3 cm
A superb arborescent cluster of brililantly metallic, bright arsenopyrite, with some contrasting siderites about its upper portion. A very elegant and sculptural specimen, i think. (NOTE: Not a Hansen piece, but one I have had from another collection that fits in well here)
GHA6 - Quartz with Siderite on Arsenopyrite - $ 400 Panasqueira, Portugal cabinet, 15.5 x 12 x 5.7 cm
A 12 cm quartz crystal elgantly straddles a large plate of bright arsenopyrite! The quartz itself is dusted with small siderite crysatls
GHA7 - Siderite with Chalcopyrite (huge xls!) - $ 4000 SOLD Panasqueira, Portugal cabinet, 19 x 11 x 7.5 cm
A monstrous specimen with the largest chalcopyrites I have yet seen from teh locality. Perched upon them are disc-shaped, lustrous brown siderite crystals and spiking out from the chalcos are several fine quartz points. An EXCEPTIONALLY LARGE specimen for the locality and in remarkably good shape! What is more, it displays nicely despite its size. Somebody took a lot of care getting it out!
HECK-205 - Pyrrhotite stalactite with Siderite - $ 1500 Potosi Mine, Santa Eulalia, Chihuahua, Mexico cabinet, 12.9 x 3.0 x 2.6 cm ex. Richard Heck
This is a truly unique specimen in our experience! It is a sinuous stalactite composed of lustrous, light brown, crystals of pyrrhotite, to 2 cm in length , which are partially covered on one side by sparkling tan rosettes of siderite to 5 mm across. At one time, Martin Zinn had the finest stalactite collection I ever saw. This specimen would have been worthy of that collection, or any Mexican minerals or sulfides collection.
J11-51 - Galena on Siderite - $ 8150 SOLD Neudorf, Saxony, Germany small cabinet, 8.5 x 5.2 x 4.9 cm ex. Lawrence Conklin
A fine Neudorf galena specimen like this, with sharp form, isolation, and siderite association, would have been considered one of the top "holy grails" of sophisticated collectors of the previous generations. All major collections had "a Neudorf" or desired to have one. Pieces of size and quality were always uncommon and this pristine and aesthetic piece meets both ancient and modern criteria for a major specimen. These impeccable old German classics were mined in the 1800s to early 1900s, and today are only found in old collections as they recycle. I have seen few specimens with such balance as this one. It features a metallic galena of the classic style from the locale, measuring 3.5 x 3.2 cm in size and perched amidst 3-dimensional siderites - all on drusy, sparkling quartz. The siderites are not "just " an association. They are also of superb quality with intense surface lustre and a rich golden-brown color. They are high quality on their own merits. As a bonus, small disc-shaped white crystals of calcite are also (unusually) present. Joe Budd photos. ex Lawrence Conklin private collection. I have seen MANY inferior specimens and they already sell for $2000-3000 (USD equivalent). What I seldom see are truly outstanding specimens, even at the Munich shows.
J11T-141 - Siderite - $ 4500 Tincroft Mine, Redruth, Cornwall, England small cabinet, 9.0 x 7.4 x 3.5 cm ex. Clarence Bement
A very , very rare item from the mid-1800s, in high demand even at the time they came out! These fancy siderite crystals were valued more than gold, with ads in old journals touting their acquisition and sale as "treasures" priced as if they were horses at the time. This large "geode" pocket-piece has crrystals to 1/4 inch, and they are both sharp and nicely colored. The label matches the hand painted number on back of the specimen; AND there is a black arrow underneath, on the piece, still. This arrow was put on by curator Louis Gratacap after 1910, at the American Museum of Natural History when they put out specimens from the famous Bement collection on display. The collection had been bought and donated to the museum by financier JP Morgan, and was the greatest collection of its day. Bement was well kown for his fine English classics, in particular. Accompaying information from the AMNH archives provides photocopies of the original label for the specimen, dated to 1884 to 1887 as per the Min Record Archive : Label Archives. The piece was acquired from famous British dealer Francis Butler following the death of his partner Richard Talling. Bements accession card notes that the price was $4.50, paid in 1886. That was a LOT of money then, for little brown crystals! However, they put a huge premium on siderite and on owning these rare examples. With a rich history, well documented from all owners, this piece has a bonus beyond its quality and size.
LC-442 - SPHALERITE on SIDERITE on QUARTZ - $ 900 SOLD Grube Pfaffenberg, Neudorf, Harz Mountains, Germany miniature, 5.5 x 4 x 3 cm
SHARP, lustrous crystals of SPHALERITE to 1.3 cm across, perched on golden siderite! The crystal is really quite brilliant - better in person! This locality is of course classic for the world-reknowned galenas, but I would guess sphalerite is just as uncommon if not more so, since I have never seen another for sale. This would be a good miniature for any location, but its got to be damned good for Germany and for the Neudorf mines (at least in terms of what might come to market) and is certainly an old specimen. The label with it dates it to 1955, but I would assume it was mined long before. Still, the exact mine name was preserved which is unusual and nice to know.
