Mineral Specimens with Schorl

11.7 x 3 x 2.9 cm. Unusual and very attractive Schorl of considerable size (over 11 cm) and excellent luster. What makes it so unusual are the terminations. The top has a beautiful complex tiered termination, while towards the base the crystal splays into dozens of small tips (characteristic of the tourmaline species FOITITE, though I haven’t analyzed this piece). Not your normal Schorl - this one is very distinctive! Much better in person. 168 grams.
7.5 x 5.6 x 2.8 cm. Lustrous and very attractive set of four Schorl crystals set in a nest of very fine light smoky quartz crystals. The three largest crystals, which range up to 2.3 cm, are undamaged from the mining process save for a few minor dings along the edges. Most of the smokies are undamaged. The luster on the Schorl is fantastic, and the overall piece is exceptional.
7.1 x 6.6 x 5.7 cm. Beautiful lustrous schorl crystals perched on a thin plate of quartz. Do not kid yourself…schorl may be often relegated to the least desirable tourmaline species but when its this lustrous, sharp, and displayable, even a black tourmaline is worthy! These Namibian schorls are by far my favorites for the species.
6.3 x 2.1 x 2.1 cm. A SHARP, doubly-terminated, floater! It is just so sharp it looks carved! The black sprinkles of schorl add a nice accent.
6.2 x 5.1 x 2.6 cm. A super lustrous 3-cm schorl perched in a quartz nest…very choice miniature! The schorl is pristine. One quartz point is damaged, to the side, but the main ones are also undamaged.
8.8 x 6.4 x 6.1 cm. A really unusual aqua specimen with elongated skinny blue crystals shooting every which way like darts. VERY unusual even for the Erongo Mtns which is synonymous with unusual aquamarines these days!
6.3 x 5.5 x 2.5 cm. BEAUTIFUL INTENSE GREEN, translucent cubic fluorites to 1 cm, with intricate schorl accents, all on white matrix of feldspar! GORGEOUS contrast here!
10 x 9 x 5.5 cm. This is one of the loveliest Schorl specimens I have come across. The crystals are beautiful jet-black columnar prisms with striking luster. Two of the larger crystals (5 cm) are doubly-terminated, and show the distinctive hemimorphic terminations. Overall, this is truly a stunning cluster of splendid Schorl crystals. You rarely see them in such nice aggregation on matrix. Usuually they are loners, or in ugly clusters, and not showing so much form individually. NO REPAIRS!!! It is NOT a typical schorl.
8.7 x 6 x 4.2 cm. Beautiful large Aqua (8.7 x 3.2 x 3.2 cm) with exceptionally good color and internal phantoms. Not often will you find an Aqua with such a nice blue color, and it is intricately zoned near the termination with multiple shades of darker blue stripes, which contributes even more to the aesthetics. To add to the excellent luster, great size (8.7 x 3 cm!), and color, there is associated Schorl, Quartz, and Albite (anchoring the crystal to the matrix, so you can see it is not repaired).
2.4 x 2.1 x 1.9 cm. A gorgeous thumber featuring two big, cherry-red, lustrous and UNUSUALLY transparent spessartines on a crystal of schorl tourmaline. The schorl is not terminated, but on this specimen it serves really as a base for the spessartines anyway. The spessartines are large, measuring to 1.7 cm. Ex. Gary Hansen collection.
6.5 x 5.5 x 4 cm. Impressive cluster of three major intergrown Schorls, as well as few smaller ones. The crystals in this very aesthetic cluster have excellent luster, especially on the mirror-like crystal faces and termination. The complex growth pattern along parts of the crystals adds great visual interest, as well as mineralogical interest. The largest crystal is about 4 cm in length and about 3 cm across.
11.5 x 8 x 6.3 cm. Remarkable plate of very attractive Schorls that are all triangular prisms in habit, the longest of which is 3.5 cm. Every vertical face is striated and has good luster, but the knockout punches are provided by the terminations. Each one is triangular with mirror-like luster. Superb. There are some contact points and a few edge wear issues that really do not affect the looks of the piece. Rarely do you find a Schorl with such nice aesthetics. The solid look to it is actually a positive, because there is good visual distinction between the crystals, not like some dense clusters that you find. Additionally, the piece itself is strong, as the Schorls grade down into a thick base of Schorl intergrown with Quartz.
4.5 x 3.6 x 2.8 cm. Very aesthetic combination piece that offers more than you would have imagined. The Albite is complete all the way around, with the main termination being perfect while the other end is complex with many small terminations. Resting on the main face of the feldspar are numerous Schorl crystals that are often doubly-terminated and have superb luster.
2.6 x 2.5 x 1.6 cm. A REALLY CUTE thumbnail of a gemmy and lustrous, two-toned green tourmaline crystal beautifully complimented by bladed, pearlescent cleavelandite from Stak Nala, Pakistan. This piece, most assuredly, is from finds 15-20 years ago. Ex. George Elling Collection.
6.3 x 2.8 x 2.4 cm. An UNUSUAL and showy, doubly terminated green tourmaline from the famous Cruzeiro Mine of Brazil. This is a highly lustrous crystal. One termination is lighter green, translucent and is etched, fibrous. The other, pinacoid, is matte, very dark green. Excellent, old-time material from a famous pegmatite. 71 grams.
