Superb form and luster highlight these twinned crystals from one of the premier localities for Rutile. Killer display face showcasing the dramatic splitz of the twin! The minor contacting and bruising do not at all detract from the mirror-like luster and the attractive crystal habit on that face, though the back is more contacted (hence the low price...otherwise around $500!).

A superb rutile specimen, showing the classic elbow twinning and the highly desirable deep red color and striated lustrous sides. The longer twin even has a perfect termination! You would be hard-pressed to find a better rutile at a reasonable price

A very large (up to 1 cm thick!) crystal with rutile's classic high luster, deep red color, and striated sides. The major termination is good, but not perfect. Brazilian rutiles of this size and quality are simply not that common, even though lesser pieces are very common.

Excellent 2.4 cm striated crystal with mirror luster and deep red color. Attached 1.3 cm elbow twin makes the specimen even more dramatic and desirable.

A sharp , cyclic- twinned brookite crystal replaced by lustrous rutile! Old classic material! Mke Howard had an article in Rocks and Minerals a few years back that talked about these crystals, in considerable detail. Basically, any "brookite" that is a pseudohexagonal bipyramid (not twinned) and that is bigger than a quarter-inch is virtually always replaced by rutile (this can be recognised by striations, that sometimes create a "moire effect", on the surface..You can also often spot a hint of the red internal reflections that characterize rutile, and the color is a little different from the black lustrous brookite xls.) I could be wrong and this one could be an exception - a very large brookite dipyramid. The striations I do see tell me it is a rutile.

This specimen hosts an approx. 2 x 2 x 2 cm complexly terminated (possibly twinned) crystal, perched with a second smaller crystal atop a natural pedestal of matrix. Well excavated, it displays beautifully. As with most of these, there are a few very minor bits of edge wear but nothing too distracting on the display face. It is complete except for a small portion of one back face only. Collected in the Sierra Mountains about 1965 by a well-known field collector named Bob Raduenz, who to this day refuses to divulge the exact locality but has also failed to find more there. These are clearly distinct from the Champion Mine rutiles from Mono county in appearance, and in chemical composition as per the Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy report shown for this update (with Niobium running nearly 25% by weight).

This specimen hosts an approx. 2 x 2 x 1.5 cm crystal, perched with others atop a natural pedestal of matrix. Well excavated, it displays beautifully.
