MD-210685 - Riebeckite (Var: Crocidolite) - - Archived Prieska District, Namaqualand, Northern Cape Province, South Africa small cabinet, 7.6 x 3.9 x 2.8 cm.
7.6 x 3.9 x 2.8 cm. Crocidolite is a form of riebeckite [Na2][Fe2+3Fe3+][(OH)2|Si8O22], which is easily apparent when you see the specimens densely-packed hair-like fibers. This variety is often called "blue asbestos" due to its deep blue-black color. This is an old-time piece from mining in South Africa. Fortunately, it was not used much commercially in the U.S., because it turned out to be perhaps the worst perpetrator of asbestos lung disease. Ex. Mullane Collection.
MD-214889 - Tiger's Eye, Riebeckite (Var: Crocidolite), Hematite - - Archived Atikokan, Hutchinson Township, Rainy River District, Ontario, Canada cabinet, 11.7 x 9.4 x 8.8 cm.
11.7 x 9.4 x 8.8 cm. A really strange, very showy double pseudomorph cabinet specimen from Ontario. This unique, highly lustrous, mushroom-shaped pseudo is quartz variety classically banded Tiger Eye after crocidolite (a fibrous asbestos mineral) after classic, hematite kidney ore. The "mushroom" cap of pseudomorphed hematite kidney ore sits atop the stem of beautiful, banded, fibrous, Tiger Eye. I have never seen anything quite like it. Not even another from the same place. It strikes me as a real oddity.
MD-52644 - Orthoclase, Riebeckite (Var: Crocidolite) - - Archived Fallon Brothers Quarry (Quincy Quarry; Ballou Quarry; Old Colony Crushed Stone Company Quarry), Quincy, Norfolk Co., Massachusetts, USA thumbnail, 1.4 cm
An excellent, old-time cluster of sharp, off-white, lustrous orthoclase crystals to 1.4 cm mostly covered with fibrous, blue-green crocidolite. Crocidolite is a fibrous form of riebeckite, an amphibole group mineral. The old, paper label is glued to the back.
