Realgar, Picropharmacolite - Jiepaiyu Mine (Shimen Mine), Shimen As-(Au) deposit, Shimen Co., Changde Prefecture, Hunan Province, China

8.3 x 4.2 x 3.2 cm. There is hardly any match in the mineral kingdom for the intense cherry red of Chinese realgars. They also have an almost wet-looking luster and gemminess that add to the appeal. Two notes about these: they are very light-sensitive, so do not keep them in the light - and, they are poisonous due to the arsenic content (they are a sulfide of arsenic), so even though they look good enough to eat - it is a very bad idea!

Realgar, Picropharmacolite - Jiepaiyu Mine (Shimen Mine), Shimen As-(Au) deposit, Shimen Co., Changde Prefecture, Hunan Province, China

3.5 x 2.9 x 2.0 cm. A cute miniature/toenail with a spray of two 1-cm-plus cherry-red realgar crystals atop a matrix, and a sharp acicular spray of the rare species picropharmacolite (white needles) below. There is nothing like these, for deep red color! Old find, though the pharmacolite was only recently realized to be such.

Calcite, Realgar - Jiepaiyu Mine (Shimen Mine), Shimen As-(Au) deposit, Shimen Co., Changde Prefecture, Hunan Province, China

7.9 x 6.1 x 4.6 cm. This is a gemmy yellow twin of calcite (the back half grew against matrix)decorated with small crystals of bright red realgar, with some minor calcites and matrix at the bottom forming an accenting base. A very attractive specimen that was once in the collection of Steve Smale.

Realgar - Getchell Mine, Adam Peak, Potosi District, Humboldt Co., Nevada, USA

3.2 x 2.3 x 1.5 cm. Excellent floater cluster of sharp Realgar crystals from the US’s most famous locality for the species. The largest crystal is an impressive 1.5 cm and has a superb mirror-like luster on the termination, as do all the crystals. The color is a beautiful red, with the upper third being gemmy. As expected, there is some damage along the bottom edges of the cluster, perhaps from the original mining. A fine specimen, and likely an old-timer.

Realgar - Jiepaiyu Mine (Shimen Mine), Shimen As-(Au) deposit, Shimen Co., Changde Prefecture, Hunan Province, China

6.8 x 2.8 x 1.7 cm. This is an extremely large, intensely gemmy and unbelievably impressive crystal of a mineral that rivals just about any in the world for dazzling red color! You typically see these scattered on matrix, of a much smaller size, and not a large, single, prismatic crystal such as this. It has just a couple of very small dings - nothing that matters visibly, in context, for such a large and freestanding crystal. Weighs 48 grams. NOTE: these are very light-sensitive, so you must keep them out of the light! If they stay in your case, they WILL ultimately turn brown!

10.2 x 5.5 x 5.0 cm. A DROP DEAD GORGEOUS realgar and calcite CABINET specimen from the recent finds at the Shimen Mine of China. A beautiful cluster of brilliant, super-gemmy, cherry-red realgar crystals is aesthetically set on the side of a 7.0 cm, very glassy, near transparent, doubly terminated and twinned, light gray calcite crystal. A razor sharp, transparent, 6.2 cm, amber calcite crystal superbly compliments the realgar and gray calcite crystal.

Realgar, Orpiment - Palomo Mine, Castrovirreyna Province, Huancavelica Department, Peru

4.3 x 2.3 x 1.1 cm. A scarce specimen of Peruvian realgar with fine, pretty crystals of unusual form, with minor association of yellow orpiment. These are both arsenic sulfide, and in fact most manifestations of realgar degrade to orpiment over time. Orpiments are not uncommon from Peru, of course, but good realgars are. The combo is striking, and I saw only one small find of this at Denver. Under strong light, this specimen lights up an INTENSE red color.

8.9 x 6.9 x 3.6 cm. A cluster of intense, gemmy red crystals of realgar isolated on a euhedral crystal of calcite - from China, the prime locality for realgars. Must be kept out of light, will lose color otherwise.

5.5 x 4.0 x 3.8 cm. A rich and very showy three-sided specimen of lustrous, golden orpiment and bright red realgar on a vuggy, quartz matrix from a classic, old-time Japanese locality - the Nishinomaki Mine on Honshu. The bright orpiment stringers really set this piece off.

Realgar - Royal Reward Mine, Green River Gorge, Franklin, King Co., Washington, USA

9.5 x 7.6 x 2.4 cm. Incredibly gemmy and lustrous, WELL-TERMINATED, bright cherry-red realgar crystals on this unusually rich, and well-preserved old realgar from Washington state! I am told these came out in the 1940s and 50s but I really cannot confirm - having seen so few for sale, overall, with any dating. You seldom see such pieces on the market, and then only from old collections. I have never seen a larger piece for sale, in fact. This is an extremely showy piece with the crystals lined up in parallel growth. Ex. George Elling Collection.

6.8 x 4.2 x 3.8 cm. Here we have an eye-catching, sharp, lustrous, gemmy, fiery cherry-red color prismatic Realgar crystal which is aesthetically sitting along the side of a well-formed, lustrous, grey Calcite scalenohedron. I have not seen many Realgar specimens with isolated crystals like this one.
