Attention quartz and Dalnegorsk collectors: Dalnegorsk AMETHYST! This is one of 4 specimens we got from a very small, surprising find in 2006. The specimens are not world-class for the species, but the importance here is the locality; and, actually, they ARE rather pretty – with good transparency, glassy luster and a very delicate lavender color. Most of the asymmetry here is due to contacts: contact on this specimen is natural, where the crystals pressed up against other now-missing crystals around them; there is only one area of shallow damage in the lower-front. Still, very pretty, most unusual for the locale.

The specimens are not world-class for the species, but the importance here is the locality; and, actually, they ARE rather pretty – with good transparency, glassy luster and a very delicate lavender color. This is the best specimen we saw from the find, and actually can hold its own with good amethysts from other more familiar amethyst localities. (And, it has a distinct pretty hue all its own). That one apparent tip-ding shown in the left-lower photo was a break that seems to have been naturally healed over again in the pocket. Comes with custom-made acrylic base.

RUT389 - Tsumcorite (XLS!!) with Wulfenite on Quartz - SOLD
Tsumeb, Namibia

thumbnail, 3 x 2.4 x 1.6 cm
share specimen

ex.  Ed Ruggiero

Sorry, we have no images of this specimen at present.

This beautiful rarity has to be one of the nicest presentation-quality specimens of crystallized tsumcorite around. The quality of the crystals is really high because of many reasons: the size of the individual crystals , which are eye-visible, are relatively huge for the species; they have bright color instead of the usual rusty brown hues; sharp form as recognizable crystals instead of the usual crust of intergrown crystals (then, usually as micros); and the rich and attractive coverage on contrasting matrix. Quartz is also quite rare from Tsumeb, and the matrix concists entirely of quartz, hematite-stained a brown color. This is an exceptional and beautiful tsumcorite, and one of a style that is, for the reasons above, seldome see.

This beautiful quartz miniature is unique in my experience, a triplet cluster of criss-crossing crystals. The largest is 3.5 cm, and doubly terminated though with a slight contact on one back tip. It is unusual, for the location and just for a quartz cluster in general. These phantomed scepters are valued at a high premium, in part because they are so uncommon and so hard to extract as well - both form the ground and from the collectors as they are treasured by the local collectors and tend to stay in the area. Collected by Bob Whitmore in 2000. Except for the slight contact on the rear of one outside tip, this is a floater otherwise

This well-trimmed, balanced matrix hosts a 4.7 x 2.1 x 2 cm crystal of radiantly purple amethyst. It is more uniformaly purple, more fat, and more glassy in lustre than most material from this locality and to me is a very special quality because of this combination of superlatives. It is razor-sharp, without a ding on it, and pretty much glows in a showcase. For the size, I'd rate it as one of the best matrix examples of this famous locality I have seen. Bob Whitmore obtained it in exchange some years ago.

Like a flame leaping off its campfire in blowing wind, this dramatic 5-cm-long cluster of gold crystals seems to bend and blow over to the right, looking as if it is really about to move. It is a very visual specimen, not your usual basic "gold" lump on a rock. The gold is composed of intricately interlocking crystals in a variety of habits. It is complete on BOTH sides although more gold shows at the bottom portion, from the front. The back is freestanding, though, and clean.

An outstanding example of the sceptered quartz that rarely come from this locality in such large size, and fine symmetry. Most are smaller, or off-centered. This is a truly superb miniature, complete and perfect all around. It has an unusually sharp phantom inside , as well. Although these seem surely pricey to outsiders, I have seen them sell for fortunes on tthe East Coast where collectors compete for the different styles in this material

This unusual, sculptural piece is a one-off I have not seen more of. It is a very interesting and 3-D specimen with translucent, sparkling quartz that has completely replaced the original disc-shaped calcite crystals. Interspersed among the larger crystals are thin, acicular green crystals of actinolite variety byssolite.

A rare old-timer, out of the noted East Coast collection of John Legro (late 1800s/early 1900s). This material is noted in books, but is seldom seen on the market. A valid specimen, with characteristic rocky matrix and the old labels, is extremely rare (in fact, this is the first i have had).

Now very rare on the market, this is a stellar miniature example of a rare habit and color of quartz found at Dalnegorsk about 4 years ago. There were very few of these fat, tapered crystals found. The color is phenomenal and unique. It is complete, although there is a white secondary coating atop portions. I have not had a good one for sale in some time
