Pyrrhotite, Galena from Dal'negorsk (Dalnegorsk; Tetyukhe; Tjetjuche; Tetjuche), Primorskiy Kray, Far-Eastern Region, Russia [db_pics/mdpics/MD-118634a.jpg]

6 x 4 x 3 cm. Attractive and very interesting combination piece consisting of modified Galena dodecahedrons intergrown with thick plates of Pyrrhotite. The Galenas, the largest of which is about 3 cm, have good luster and occasionally modified faces. In some cases, there is incomplete growth, but that doesn’t detract at all. The Pyrrhotites are an amazing .7 cm thick, and have very good luster. An important specimen from a very famous locality.

6.8 x 5.5 x 4.7 cm. A VERY SHOWY and CLASSIC combination piece from the ancient and famous Stari Trg Mine at Trepca, Serbia. This pristine specimen consists of two, intersecting, rosette-like discs. The fronts are covered with the famous bright, brassy pyrite pseudomorphs after pyrrhotite crystals and are beautifully accented by: WHITE botryoidal rhodochrosite in the middle of the front rosette; lustrous and colorless nail-head calcite crystals; lustrous, gray galena cubes on both rosettes; and lustrous, black sphalerite crystals on the back rosette. The backs of both discs are covered with white, drusy quartz. This is really a neat sulfide specimen with nice association minerals from a classic locality. Ex. George Elling Collection.

Pyrite, Pyrrhotite from Mont Saint-Hilaire, Rouville RCM, Montérégie, Québec, Canada [db_pics/mdpics/MD-119700a.jpg]

12.9 x 13.4 x 12.4 cm . This is a WHOPPER pseudomorph specimen, and a rare one at that, from the classic Poudrette Quarry at Mont-Ste-Hilaire. It is an IMMENSE pyrrhotite crystal that has been pseudomorphed by sparkly pyrite! Embedded in the middle of the front face is a siderite crystal, and other blocky siderites have grown against one side. This unique and amazing crystal specimen came out of the collection of the Canadian Museum of Nature.

Siderite, Pyrrhotite from Baia Sprie (Felsöbánya), Maramures Co., Romania [db_pics/mdpics/MD-120478a.jpg]

10.5 x 8.0 x 4.2 cm. This is a very large, FASCINATING specimen out of the Ed David collection, from Eastern Europe. It was in the Hoyt collection before Ed David got it. It features a big, rich cluster of hexagonal, poker-chip pyrrhotite crystals that were covered with a later generation of siderite (both are iron minerals that fed off the iron-rich solution in the pocket to grow). At the edge of the specimen is a patch of siderite crystals that grew densely on their own, to a larger size, next to the siderite-covered pyrrhotites.

13.5 x 8.5 x 4.8 cm. An AESTHETIC CABINET specimen of highly lustrous and translucent, light gray dolomite rhombs festooned with brassy, tabular crystals of cubanite and pyrrhotite from the 1960s find at the famous Morro Velho Gold Mine, Nova Lima, Brazil. The cubanites reach 9 mm. Dr. Gary Hansen got much of this find and this is from his personal collection. I found one more stashed away in the small lot from his collection. VERY DIFFICULT to obtain in this quality and size today.

8.4 x 6.4 x 4.4 cm. A BIG, complex crystal of brassy pyrrhotite with stepped form, decorated with little sphalerites that have a superb glassy luster - a beautiful combo! These days, just about all good pyrrhotites come from Dalnegorsk. This is an OLD one from Santa Eulalia. A collection card accompanying it shows it to have been in the Dick Hauck collection, and was acquired 36 years ago, in 1971.

6.1 x 4.6 x 2.6 cm. This is an old-timer from Santa Eulalia -- a matrix-free specimen of crystallized galena, with a shiny-metallic luster and extremely complex, stepped faces - with associated pyrrhotite of a dull bronze color. The altered form of both minerals indicates that there was natural etching in the pocket of both the galena and the pyrrhotite.

2.2 x 1.6 x 1.2 cm. A dramatic single 8 mm gem crystal atop a perch of massive pyrrhotite, makes for a killer thumbnail specimen from this new find. The crystal is actually a macle twin on close inspection, I now realize! You can see this more clearly in person, as the twin plane is shallow. I had never seen spinel from here or spinel on pyrrhotite (or other sulfides) from anywhere. The contrast is striking and, luckily, the spinels are of gem quality so these are good specimens on their own and not just new "locality pieces." These gem crystals have a unique lavender hue that sets them apart from other spinels we have seen out of Mogok and Sri Lanka.

3.2 x 3.2 x 2.8 cm. Few specimens had more than one crystal exposed on matrix that I know of from this find. This one features a dramatic single 8 mm gem crystal atop a perch of massive pyrrhotite, with a secondary crystal as well (not as gemmy, but still colorful and a nice accent). I had never seen spinel from here or spinel on pyrrhotite (or other sulfides) from anywhere. 7.1 x 3.6 x 3.2 cm. A really beautiful quartz rich with sparkling, metallic inclusions of paper-thin pyrrhotite crystals, from this classic locality which is a deep gold mine. Never seen another like it! Ex. Richard Hauck Collection.

4.4 x 4.1 x 2.9 cm. Pyrrhotites are now very common from Russia, but this is an old Santa Eulalia specimen (out of the Charles Hansen collection) and therefore a lot more notable. That big crystal measures 2.8 cm, a perfect hexagonal poker chip crystal, in a bed of smaller and partial crystals along with massive sulfides.

4.7 x 3.2 x 2.4 cm. A classic from 1960s-1970s Mexico finds, this is a sharp hexagonal pyrrhotite in back flanked by a second elongated crystal in front, on minor quartz matrix. Superb miniature example of this historic deposit, which is still around but not making pyrrhos these days. Ex. Charlie Key.

5.9 x 5.4 x 5.2 cm. This glittering golden pyramid is actually a pseudomorph of pyrite after an unusually formed large crystal of pyrrhotite - on close inspection, a compound crystal with a narrow hollow running down the center. Little calcites have formed on top of the pyrite. Ex. Stoudt Collection.
