4.1 x 4.0 x 2.8 cm. The Eagle mine is probably best known for its pyritohedral Pyrite specimens. This cluster is a good representative Eagle mine Pyrite showing typical striated pyritohedra with sharp, lustrous faces. Ex. Jaime Bird Collection.

6.2 x 3.3 x 2.5 cm. A stunning, peacock-iridescent, 2.0 cm pyrite crystal aesthetically set on a sliver of matrix with tan, flattened calcite rhombs from a 2005 find at the Sarbay Mine of Kazakhstan. The pristine crystal is complete all-around. The smaller, iridescent pyritohedrons are a very nice compliment.

5.6 x 4.8 x 4.1 cm. Lustrous, brassy, rosettes of intergrown pyrite crystals are aesthetically and richly scattered on the 3-dimensional quartz crystal matrix on this excellent and very showy specimen from recent finds at the Fengjiashan Mine, China. This is an unusual Chinese pyrite form.

6.1 x 5.2 x 4.4 cm. A striking and aesthetic pyrite specimen from the Shangbao Mine. Two large, splendent, brass-yellow pyrite monoliths dramatically rest atop a showy jumble of smaller crystals. The large cube is 4.0 x 3.0 x 2.0 cm.

5.7 x 5.3 x 4.8 cm. This small find was made last year in China at the Chenzong Mine, and is absolutely unique: glittery, golden pyrite microcrystals preferentially set on the edges of translucent, gray calcite rhombs (to over 9 cm across) as opposed to the disc shaped crystals we saw in previous finds. Some of the specimens had very sparse coverage of pyrite, just a salting, but here, it is richly carpeting the crystal edges. The pristine, four intergrown rhombs (to 2.6 cm) are beautifully set atop matrix covered with smaller calcites. Matrix specimens from this find were uncommon.

9.8 x 4.8 x 3.8 cm. This find was made a couple of years back in China, and is absolutely unique: glittery, golden pyrite microcrystals preferentially deposited on the edges of flattened, translucent, pastel-pink, manganoan calcite rhombs. The calcite rhombs reach 4.5 cm on this fine piece. Some of the specimens had very sparse coverage of pyrite, just a salting, but here, it is richly carpeting the crystal edges.

Pyrite from San Giovanni Mine, Punta della Torre, Iglesias, Carbonia-Iglesias Province, Sardinia, Italy [db_pics/mdpics/MD-223963b.jpg]

7.5 x 4.9 x 2.7 cm. Very rare acicular pyrite crystals. Not only are these rare for the species, but pyrite itself is quite rare for this locality so it is doubly-uncommon. In fact, this is the only such example I have seen, and I find it highly interesting because as common as pyrite is in the world, you would think if it could form this habit, it would do so more commonly. But this seems not the case. Giorgio Spiga, an Italian collector, has corrected my original locality label and informed me these were found in 1972-1973, originally sold as millerite. He says: "Some years later some specimens were analysed at the University of Modena and officially classified as Pyrite by the academic temple of the science."...and further "These crystals look as acicular at a first observation, with needles up to than 1 cm, but using a microscope or a good loupe it is easy to realize that we are in presence of an extreme phase of skeletal crystals formation." The exact location within the mine is the Contatto Ovest Stope.

7.7 x 4.8 x 3.7 cm. Scheelite is a rare associate in the Romanian polymetallic deposits. This is a superb specimen with a huge crystal for the locality of about 1.5 cm. It is perfect all around (no damage) and shows an intense deep blue color when backlit. Many are just gray, this blue color being therefore highly desirable. Also, the size of the crystal, and the balanced association, make this a particularly beautiful specimen.

Fluorite, Pyrite from Naica, Mun. de Saucillo, Chihuahua, Mexico [db_pics/mdpics/MD-224755a.jpg]

6.6 x 4.8 x 4.1 cm. This interlocked cluster of gemmy fluorite crystals has a very deeply colored green chromophore. The crystals show stepped growth and all appear to be cubes modified by octahedral faces. They are all gemmy. The largest crystal is 2.8 cm across. And as a bonus, the specimen also has inclusions of bright pyrite as well as pyrite crystals to 1.0 cm across scattered on the fluorite.

6.0 x 4.5 x 4.4 cm. A stunning miniature with a 3.5-cm complex crystal cluster atop. This looks like a mountain rising out of a nest of surrounding trees, the single large and sharp, gemmy, cuboctahedron in the middle just rising above the surrounding minutely crystallized fluorite. All perched on a nice mound of crystallized sphalerite and complete all around.

Fluorite, Pyrite, Sphalerite from Gibraltar Mine (incl.

8.2 x 7.6 x 4.1 cm. One of the most striking pieces in this find that I know of, for the startling gemminess of the crystals which show bright pyrite inclusions floating inside; for the perfection of the display face; and the balanced aesthetics and contrast on bright, jet-black sphalerite matrix. This is a superb specimen by any standard, and shows the "classic" cuboctahedral habit of Naica at its best. The lustre and transparency are superb. The pyrites make it, though. Also, pieces like this are very distinct form earlier finds which had much more prominent galena association and less of the sphalerite. The rich, superb sphalerite that is more common in this pocket is really quite unusual for Naica in any quantity, and with good fluorite in association.

4.8 x 3.4 x 1.1 cm. A classic, very sharp and showy baryte blade from the Niobec Mine of Quebec. The complete all-around, lustrous, translucent, tabular, gray crystal has an excellent, beveled termination. The crystal is wonderfully highlighted by a rich, preferential dusting of sparkly, golden pyrite microcrystals. The pyrite also coats the small fluorite cubes on one side. This is an interesting, highly representative specimen of the combination species and famous locale.

5.3 x 4.2 x 2.7 cm. This is a superb, sharp, lustrous specimen of antique pyrite from the French Creek Mining area. It is from the collection of E.R. Chadbourn, early 1900s, through Phil Scalisi's collection, and recently belonging to another US East Coast collector. This piece is dramatic and shows a curving and graceful cluster of pyrites stacked upon a small bit of matrix; and it looks like pyrite from no other locality I can think of. It is pristine and shows no sign of decrepitating "pyrite disease."
