DENV08-22 - Polybasite with Calcite and Stephanite - $ 12500 SOLD Judas Shaft, Fresnillo, Zacatecas, Mexico small cabinet, 8.8 x 4.4 x 2.7 cm
A MAJOR, IMPORTANT specimen of Mexican silver species, with sharp polybasite crystals that are literally the size and aspect of Swiss hematites, so robust that I actually DID fall for the trick when shown the piece (at double this price to get me warmed up for a killer) AS a Swiss hematite. I made some fumbling comment about how I could not sell Swiss hematites in the US so well, but I thought the calcite so neat and unusual, like dhte contrast, and well...my source got me. Apparently the piece turned up at a small show, having come directly from a miner in Mexico up to the show and missing the normal channels such major pieces often get funnelled into. The calcite is a wonderful accent, and I cannot ever recall seeing another Mexican specimen of polybasite with such sheer , amazing contrast. Visually, this leaps out. The sparkling drusy calcite highlights the metallic, lustrous blades so nicely. Small barrel-like stephanites are in association as well (on the back), according to Dr. Terry Wallace who examined the specimen for me at the Denver show. He confirmed for me that the piece came from this small shaft adjoining two slightly different deposits, an aberration which is the reason why you have the calcite and the polybasite in the same place at the same time...normally not seen. This is an important Mexican specimen, and an important silver species specimen. If i can presume, I will say that 10 years ago it would have been quickly sold into the Miguel Romero collection at any price, and fit right in with his museum-level Mexican silver species suite which I have recently acuired fom the University of Arizona Science Center .

MD-211549 - Polybasite - - Archived Chispas Mine (Pedrazzini mine), Arizpe, Mun. de Arizpe, Sonora, Mexico miniature, 4.7 x 3.6 x 2.3 cm.
4.7 x 3.6 x 2.3 cm. The Chispas Mine of Sonora, Mexico has produced some of Mexico’s and the world’s best and largest specimens of polybasite crystals. This superb, very rich and showy specimen is highlighted by a sharp, lightly iridescent, metallic-bright, 2.2 cm polybasite tablet at the top. The front of this piece is composed entirely of polybasite tablets and the specimen is solid polybasite. The back of the specimen is splendent, massive polybasite with classic "ruby silver" highlights. Specimens of this quality were produced 100 years ago, from about 1900-1910. However, we have no proof, that this piece was collected in that era. This well-known Mexican locale is the subject of a fine article in the current issue of the Mineralogical Record, Vol. 39, #6, November-December, 2008.
MD-247917 - Acanthite, Polybasite - - Archived San Juan de Rayas Mine (Rayas Mine; Reyes Mine), Guanajuato, Mun. de Guanajuato, Guanajuato, Mexico small cabinet, 5.5 x 4.3 x 2.7 cm.
5.5 x 4.3 x 2.7 cm. This is an important silver species specimen with excellent aesthetics and very rich masses of sharp polybasite crystals. The bladed polybasites form clusters atop a natural pedestal of silver-rich matrix, and atop each of the polybasite crystals there are sharp outgrowths of brilliantly metallic, pseudocubic, little acanthite crystals - mostly 1mm in size but forming larger clusters. The polybasites, as do so many from here, have some slight coating of iridescent material or alteration. The stark contrast between these pseudocubic-blocked towers and the bladed polybasite under them is really interesting. Ex. Harold Urish Collection.
MD-266071 - Acanthite, Polybasite - - Archived San Juan de Rayas Mine (Rayas Mine; Reyes Mine), Guanajuato, Mun. de Guanajuato, Guanajuato, Mexico miniature, 4.8 x 4.5 x 2.3 cm.
4.8 x 4.5 x 2.3 cm. Almost a complete floater, this acanthite specimen can be displayed on either side to equal effect. It is very 3-dimensional and treelike, and just sharper than most acanthites from here tend to be. The dark gray crystals are arborescent, with a few exhibiting incipient, hopper growth. The largest crystal is 1.1 cm in length. Some crystals have a thin brassy yellow coating of chalcopyrite, as well as the base of the cluster. Ex. Dr. Miguel Romero Collection.
