Rarer than almost anything else, this species is probably the most sought after mineral species to collectors (and among the most expensive). Crystals like this were found almost 70 years ago, and not in this quality since. This phospho displays fish-tail twinning, high luster, transparency, and an exquisite pastel green color. Admiittedly, the crystal has been contacted on the back side, but this does not, in any way, affect the beauty and rarity of this specimen. As well, it is the most desirable fishtail twin habit and has a substantial amount of cutting rough material within! You need to see these in person to understand what a uniquely surreal, glowing color this presents!

This gorgeous thumbnail exhibits the incredible gemminess and unique blue- green color that makes phosphophyllite one of the most desired species in the mineral world. Like the above specimen, it is a stunning example of the species, showing sharp and classical twinning. The twin itself is well-formed, but the left "wing" is, sadly, contacted or cleaved and thus mostly missing. It is best displayed frontally, therefore, to get the visual depth and show off the fine face (left photo) on that side. With phospho cut stones selling for $1000-2500 per arata when you can even find one, there is substantial cutting rough value in the specimen's gemmy center, of around $3000 and perhaps more.

A razor-sharp, glassy, classically twinned phosphophyllite crystal with absolutely top form to it. It is not gemmy per se, except at the tips, but it does have that classic unique color. It is complete all around and the twinning symmetry just rivets the eye. This is a twinned crystal, as were most such specimens from the famous finds of the 1950s. NO COMPARABLE QUALITY HAS BEEN FOUND IN OVER 50 YEARS NOW! These remain the Holy Grail of mineral collectors in all size and price ranges.

A colorful specimen with undamaged, bright phospho crystals growing up the front face, to 2.5 cm in size! The receding ridges of phospho to the upper-left are damaged terminations, but they add color to the specimena nd so I did not trim them off (though it could be done). Overall, for the price, this is a pretty decent matrix phospho with good display qualities and a lot of bang for the buck. It is SO hard to get ANY sample of this exceedingly rare and desirable species, that to find a relatively affordable matrix miniature like this is not expected.

A dramatic cluster of several parallel grown crystals from THE holy grail of old rarities finds, the phosphopyllites found in the 1940s-1950s in Bolivia. Still today, nothing matches the shocking and unique color of a phospho from the old finds here. The intense color saturation just glows and stands out in a case. The color saturation is so intense, that honestly even fine photos simply find it hard to convey the exact and unique tone of green color. Most are not complete around the edges in part due to their age, and to the softness of the species. So some damage is generally acceptable to own a larger-than-1cm example of these crystals. This crystal can display one of two ways. Vertically, it shows a fine termination and a very gemmy, transparent large face forward. The back of the termination is slightly damaged, and the right rear edge and bottom edge in this view show contact or breakaway damage. Nevertheless, it displays finely and look simpressive, especially given the price for a size where such crystals are normally five figures. Some of us here prefer it, actually, set horizontal to show maximum width. Either way, this piece presents more finely than perhaps the text implies, and it is a relatively large example to find on the market. Joe Budd Photos

Phosphophyllite is one of the Holy Grails of mineral collecting. To get a good one, to even see a good one, is almost impossible. To get a LARGE and good one, that has some show value beyond being a killer little crystal , this is uncommon in the extreme! This specimen has a 2-INCH crystal cluster shooting starkly upright from a well-trimmed matrix. The color is phenomenal - the classic, and totally unique blue-green color with high saturation. The crystals are stacked like plates against each other, culminating in a very sharp and totally gemmy-clear termination atop. The crystal cluster seems to have grown in a thin seam, straight up or down as the case may be, and matrix which attached along the front has been carefully removed to leave a series of micro-faces where crystal growth was constrained, but this is not damage. A small bit of contact damage does exist, on the very left side of the cluster. The right side is terminated with outward-pointing faces showing nice patterns of crystallization on their surfaces, and just a slight bit of edge wear atop those side faces. The gemmy, stepped terminations are complete, and stand above the bulk of the cluster to really show off nicely. I have had in my life only 3 major phosphophyllites, and this is perhaps the best "bang for the buck" of them, in terms of owning something large and showy that does not completely break all price horizons (as other phosphophylites might), because I was lucky enough to buy this as a "fixer-upper" in need of a trim and clean. I cannot emphasize enough the uniqueness of the color, or the rarity of getting such a large and showy specimen of this incredibly rare, gem species. Most of them were found in the 1930s and 1940s, with jus ta small trickle turning up despite intensive efforts, in all the years since.
