OK, at first glance a beast only an East Coast collector could love, but lets at least all admit it seems a relatively GOOD mica intrinsically, with sharp 3-dimensional form and a nice overall look. The chocolate color is also attractive. Most specimens from Franklin are true oldtimers and this is no exception, certainly historic (said to date to teh Canfield Collection, and traded out of the Franklin Musuem some time later) . The piece has a waxy lustre with a rich coffee color.

This crystal, measuring approx. 4.5 cm across, has outstanding luster, great classic muscovite form, and exhibits a lovely, golden color. It has natural terminations, and is a floater. It is a BEAUTIFUL example of a gem mica from an unusual locality! These gemmy golden phlogopites are turning out to be among the world's great examples of the species, and have trickled out slowly for 3-4 years now. And, they are not that expensive for a 100-fold increase in quality over most previous finds of the species. The piece is gemmy (you can really see through it in most places, looking head-on), and literally glows an intense amber-gold color when backlit well.

5 x 4.1 x 2.3 cm. Choice Ruby specimen from the Chumar Mine of the eastern Himalayas. Many of the finest Ruby specimens from here have shown good long prismatic development of the crystals, and this is no exception. The main crystal is upwards of 3 cm long, partially terminated, and contacted in the back, has traces of the shocking pink color that these rubies are famous for.

5.1 x 3.9 x 2.7 cm. Mica is usually pretty doggoned boring, an opaque "accessory" mineral. But in some rare occurrences, the sheet-like crystals are transparent enough that even when densely stacked by the hundreds, as here, the resulting crystal "book" is transparent! This one has the added distinction of having a beautiful sea-foam green color to it.

7.2 x 4.5 x 4.0 cm. Gem quality Mica species are very difficult to obtain from any locality. The gem Phlogopites from Afghanistan that came on the market a few years ago are some of the best quality crystals for the species that I have seen. This particular crystal is a very sharp, highly lustrous, deep honey color, GEM quality, hexagonal crystal on white marble matrix. The quality of the Phlogopite is very good for this locality, and these specimens are not nearly as obtainable as they were just a few years ago. Ex. Richard Kosnar Collection.

Pyrochlore, Vesuvianite, Phlogopite, Calcite - Oka complex, Oka, Deux-Montagnes RCM, Laurentides, Québec, Canada

7.0 x 5.1 x 3.5 cm. Pyrochlore is an uncommon niobium oxide, found in unusual igneous rocks, such as nepheline syenites and carbonatites, and some granitic pegmatites. The Oka area hosts a classic carbonatite complex. A pink paper arrow points to a 7 mm, sharp, lustrous and partially gemmy, reddish-brown, octahedral pyrochlore crystal jauntily perched on the edge of pearl-white strontium calcite matrix. Lustrous, olive-green vesuvianite crystals and a couple of black phlogopite mica books are a nice contrast to the matrix. Accompanied by an old John Albanese label dating from 1953-1968. Ex. George Elling Collection.

Sapphirine, Phlogopite, Scapolite - Androy Region, Tuléar (Toliara) Province, Madagascar

5.1 x 3.4 x 3 cm. Sapphirine is rarely found in such sharp, nicely formed crystals as from these recent discoveries in Madagascar. The major crystal is 2.5 cm long and doubly-terminated. It is sharp and waxy in lustre. Smaller crystals are all over the backside. Ex. Martin Zinn Collection.

3.2 x 3.2 x 2 cm. A sharp, very well-defined single Ruby crystal (2.3 cm) in Calcite with Phlogopite. The color is very good, and the tip is gemmy and terminated. Ex. Charlie Key.

Anthophyllite, Phlogopite - Hermanov, Velké Meziříčí, Vysočina Region, Moravia (Mähren; Maehren), Czech Republic

4.3 x 3.8 x 3.8 cm. Anthophyllite is an amphibole mineral: (Mg, Fe)7Si8O22(OH)2, magnesium iron inosilicate hydroxide. It is a common component of some metamorphic and metasomatic rocks. In this specimen, the anthophyllite has been peeled back to show that it was wrapped around a complete lozenge of phlogopite (one of the rarer members of the mica group).

Phlogopite - Bancroft, Bancroft District, Hastings Co., Ontario, Canada

34.7 x 26.3 x 1.6 cm. A huge cleavage section of mica variety phlogopite, from Ontario. These are old classics, and everybody knows they came out once upon a time but seldom do you see one so big and pure and fine. This is the kind of clean mica plates that could have been used for mica windows and lampshades in the old days. Weight is 4.6 pounds. Ex. Philadelphia Academy of Sciences Collection.

Phlogopite, Diopside - Yates mine, Otter Lake, Pontiac RCM, Outaouais, Québec, Canada

8.1 x 6.0 x 3.7 cm. This is an incredibly thick "book" of microscopically thin sheets of phlogopite mica from Canada - it is hard to imagine how many are in this 3.3-cm thick stack. You can see the sharp hexagonal outline clearly here, the dark, smoky color, and the high reflectivity.
