Botryogen, Copiapite, Butlerite and Parabutlerite - Mina Santa Elena, Alcaparrosa, San Juan, Argentina

This is a superb specimen composed of almost soid botrygen in the form of the huge crystals which makes this find so phenomenal. The sharpest crystals atop are to almost 1 cm, but they rest on swept-back, bladed crystals to 2 cm and more. Another cluster of freestanding crystals on the back features a 1.5 cm doubly-terminated crystal. It is the best Miniature I saw, for my taste, and has both aesthetics and color as well as the significance for the species you'd want at this price range for a rarity. Truly oustanding for the find and certainly for the species compared to other locales.

This specimen has the largest crystal I have seen from the find, which shows 2.2 cm well-exposed on several sides and obviously continues into the matrix for another centimeter or so, popping out a bit along the front face (maybe it can be excavated more?), making this surely one of the world's largest of species. The crystal is translucent, and is terminated (a bit rough from contact, but it does seem to be terminated). Major for the species! I do not know if gems can be cut from the species, but if it is possible, this would be the piece...

3.9 x 3.7 x 3.4 cm. Butlerite and parabutlerite are very rare hydrated iron sulfates. Lustrous, translucent, orange-brown butlerite and parabutlerite prisms to 2 mm richly cover matrix on this fine example of these rare species. This piece is from the very less well-known Kavir-e-Sagand area of Iran and was collected in the 1970s expeditions by Pierre Bariand of the Sorbonne. Rarely available material, today.
