This is a superb specimen of intergrown Muscovite books, with fabulous metallic luster and a terrific reddish-copper color. But the best part of all is the superlative crystal form, with all the individual books having a sharp well-defined hexagonal shape. This specimen is way above what you commonly find for any of the mica group! As with some other "common" minerals in this collection, it is a rare example that would fit in with fancier species, no questions asked!

This plate has deep orange-colored scheelites, to 2.5 cm on edge, nicely perched atop a well-trimmed matrix! The color is unusually rich and deep, and the lustre is good . A good, rich plate for the price from the same pocket as produced the other unusually dark-orange crystals shown above

A beautiful large specimen with a solid covering of apatite all the way around, completely covering hte rocky core of the piece on all sides. From teh apatite, little pink feldspars have grown out! Although individually the crystals are smallish (1 to 1.5 cm), the carpet of them is exceedingly rich and so the piece is very colorful as a result. It is a large impressive specimen, that is better in person. I am pricing the few specimens with complete coverage, you will note, lower by far than those with isolated crystals. This simply reflects my own taste, and does not diminish the value of these relatively bargain-priced specimens of this sort. This is similar to APA19, although this one is without the damage and is nearly pristine.

At first glance, you might think from the photos this would be a miniature - to have such balance and proportion is after all unlikely in a large specimen. Yet, at 1500 grams and 6 inches in length, its the size of a large grapefruit or small melon! This doubly-terminated "cannon" shaped aquamarine is truly a beast, but an aesthetic one despite its size. I, and several other dealer/friends who have seen much of what Nagar has produced and sent to the European and US market, would go so far as so think it ranks up there among the top five to ten specimens from the region for overall quality and aesthetics. This is one of two great specimens that came together from a single pocket in 2007. The piece is shockingly complete all around, with no repairs, and only a small ding and a shallow contact/damaged spot on the lower-rear tip of the bottom - totally facing away from any view. This doubly-terminated crystal is perched on a natural pedestal of bladed, roseate muscovite matrix. This "makes" the piece...you need that natural pedestal to distance it from all the singles out there. However, the unusally high glassy lustre, geometry, and gemminess (especially for the size, as most large Nagar aquas go more opaque) are also superior. Gamini, who ignored price and my own criteria when picking pieces he felt were artistic, and who hasn't spent years trying to judge and grade Nagar aquas, went right to this one the first time he saw it in my case - while ignoring quite a few other aquas, some pricier. Price includes specimen, painting, and custom lucite base for display. NOTE. A professional photo by Joe Budd , on gradient background, was recently added. THIS SHOWS THE TRUE COLOR AND LUSTRE, which was very difficult for us to photograph with normal equipment as it is so bright and lustrous!

Self-collected by Chuck while climbing the steep tailings on the south side of the mountain the French Pete is located on top of,this is a very unusual specimen!

A neat combo piece, and actually a darned good muscovite for a County collection . Self-collected by Chuck during late 80's/early 90's while the mine was owned and worked by Fred Stevens.

Another urban mineral specimen, from excavations in the northern San Diego County town of Fallbrook. These are crudely terminated andalusites, though covered atop by a drapery of muscovite. Unusual!

ch22 - Manganocolumbite, Cleavelandite, Muscovite - $ 2400 SOLD

This is an extremely rare critter, the best Chuck knows of, from one of the more interesting mines in San Diego County. It features a VERY equant, sharp, and surprisingly attractive crystal of the rare species Manganocolumbite perched aesthetically on matrix.

This nearly 2-cm crystal has an unusual "crackled" effect on the surface when looked at very closely, or in strong light, but looks smoothfaced from far out. It has a rich purple phantom in the middle. The edges are razor-sharp, very dramatic. The matrix of yellow muscovite is uncommon from this mine and contrasts nicely

This large specimen is classic Nagar material, and elegantly exhibits a fat, very gemmy, 2 x 2 x 2 inch crystal on a plate of beautiful hexagonal muscovite blades. ALL of the small crystals are equally briht, gemmy, and terminated! the whole piece is pristine! This is a very good bargain for the price, given the size (over 8 inches!)

D06-211 - Beryl var Morganite on Quartz and Muscovite - $ 850 SOLD
Gillette Quarry, Haddam Neck, Connecticut, USA
small cabinet, 6.0 x 5.6 x 3.7 cm
ex.  George Elling

Beryl var Morganite on Quartz and Muscovite - Gillette Quarry, Haddam Neck, Connecticut, USA

Long before the California pegmatites had been discovered, the pegmatites of central Connecticut produced the best beryls and tourmalines in the U.S. This matrix beryl var. morganite, is doubly terminated, translucent, and a pastel pink color. The morganite measures 5.0 cm in length. When properly displayed, a small damaged area is on the back side and is not visible. Gemmy? NO! Significant? YES!

This is a dramatic specimen featuring a very well-exposed scheelite crystal perched upon wings of thick muscovite blades, on muscovite matrix. The contrast is good, and the size is impressive. The sharp, well-centered scheelite crystal is very equant and balanced at 6.5 x 6 x 6 cm in size. The color of the scheelite is a very clean orange hue, not too brown and not unusually red as some more recent finds (this came out in the mid-2000s). We nicknamed this piece "the heart" for obvious reasons! Joe Budd photos .
