Wulfenite, Mimetite from San Francisco Mine (Cerro Prieto Mine), Cerro Prieto, Cucurpe, Mun. de Cucurpe, Sonora, Mexico [db_pics/mdpics/MD-271369a.jpg]

5.2 x 5 x 4.5 cm. A stunning, absolutely gemmy cluster of sharp wulfenite windowpanes to 2.7 cm across, dusted with bright mimetite. The wulfenite on this specimen is not typical at all of the locale, being an unusual yellow-orange coloration instead of orange as most crystals from here. The 3-dimensionality of the piece is appealing, and it’s very nearly pristine quality is a miracle, given the fragility of such pieces. This was collected in the late 1960s, by Wayne Thompson. Specimens in this quality and miniatures on matrix no less, are simply not often available.

14.5 x 7 x 6 cm. Here you have a dramatic, large, 3-dimensional specimen from a very rare and old find - literally a vertical tower of light gossan matrix completely smothered by sparkling balls of botryoidal mimetite. The color is a saturated yellow, nearly the best you can get for the locality and far more desirable than orange-yellow hues. It is brilliantly sparkling in light and colorful and complete-all-around 360 degrees. In fact, this is one of the finer large mimetites from this find I have seen survive to this day, 40 years later. The color is a very intense orangey-yellow hue. All such mimetites as this were collected in a single large find in end of 1968 and start of 1969 by Benny Fenn (right before the Tucson show of that year), from a one-time pocket at a small prospect. It was literally a small prospect, not even a developing mine and it never panned out or produced more specimens again. Despite attempts to find another mimetite pocket, no more ever came out after one release in 1969, which was sold off at the Tucson show of that year. These remain unique in the world for their overall aspect; and large, colorful pieces like this are treasured by those who have them. Even at the time, this would have been considered exceptional for its size and all-around aesthetics.

5.7 x 3.4 x 3.0 cm. A fine mimetite from the late 1960s find at San Pedro Corralitos, Mexico. Lustrous, translucent, yellow-orange botryoids totally cover the thin, sturdy, curved, gossan matrix. Nearly pristine. Highly representative, classic material from this one-time-only find in 1968. Ex. Robert Whitmore Collection.

7.7 x 5.5 x 3.4 cm. A sculptural specimen with lustrous, pseudocubic, butterscotch-colored wulfenite crystals richly scattered on a very sturdy, 3-dimensional gossan matrix and beautifully complimented by botryoidal green mimetite from a recent find at the Mina Ojuela at Mapimi, Mexico. The largest wulfenite crystal is 1.2 cm and is doubly terminated. This is a recent find, from just before the 2008 Denver Show. The exact mine location is Level 6, San Juan Poniente vein.

5.6 x 3.0 x 2.5 cm. Radiating sprays of lustrous, partially gemmy, honey-brown mimetite crystals richly and very aesthetically cover the gossan matrix on this outstanding, older piece from the mines at Santa Eulalia. The prisms reach 1.0 cm and some are doubly terminated. Most Santa Eulalia mimetite is botryoidal, making this piece even more noteworthy. Ex. Consie Prince Collection.

Mimetite (Var: Campylite) from Dry Gill Mine, Caldbeck Fells, North and Western Region (Cumberland), Cumbria, England, UK [db_pics/mdpics/MD-282286b.jpg]

9.0 x 7.4 x 5.0 cm. A superb, old-time mimetite (variety: campylite) specimen from the historic Dry Gill Mine of Cumbria. Lustrous, olive-green, curved barrel-shaped mimetite prisms (campylite) richly and thickly cover the undulating matrix of milky quartz. The coverage is about the most I have seen on one specimen. Dry Gill was active as an ore producer from 1830-1869. Fine pieces were recovered in recent times, but this is definitely a 19th century piece. Ex. Robert Whitmore Collection.

4.7 x 4.3 x 4.1 cm. An excellent specimen with lustrous, pseudocubic, butterscotch-colored wulfenite crystals richly covering the mounded gossan matrix and from a recent find at the Mina Ojuela at Mapimi, Mexico. The very blocky crystals reach 5 mm. This fine piece is pristine and there are even a few tiny, accenting green mimetite botryoids. This is a new find, from just before the 2008 Denver Show. The exact mine location is Level 6, San Juan Poniente vein.

5.5 x 4.4 x 3.2 cm. From the 1993 finds at this classic mine, in its last reopening and specimen mining phase, this is a classic miniature with crystals to about 1 cm, with great lustre and much gemminess. Now hard to find in good matrix specimens. Ex. Harold Urish Collection.

Mimetite from Sammy Dog Mine (Hillside Mine; Ironwood Mine; God's claim), Silver Bell District, Silver Bell Mts, Pima Co., Arizona, USA [db_pics/mdpics/MD-283274a.jpg]

4.2 x 3.6 x 1.6 cm. This is a rare specimen, the first I have personally seen, of material I could only find referenced in an Arizona Bureau of Mines report. Harold Urish self-collected this in 1999 at the so-called God’s Claim, here. It features unusual, acicular crystals of mimetite on a background of green mineralization which, according to that report, as summarized on MINDAT, may be descloizite or bayldonite. Ex. Harold Urish Collection.

3.7 x 2.7 x 2.5 cm. Collected by George Godas in 1995, this is a classic combination from the mine, with intense red-orange mimetite on flashy blades of wulfenite. It looks Mexican, but yes these combinations also did come out of Arizona, from time to time. A beautiful miniature with incredible color saturation. From the well-known Tucson collection of 40-year collector, Harold Urish.

7.7 x 6.1 x 2.9 cm. Santa Eulalia is the poor stepchild in most people's minds to the commonly seen, more yellow-orange mimetite from the San Pedro Corralitos locality. However, this is only because the good old stuff from here is so uncommon (circa 1960s-1970s). This is a solid specimen of splayed, mushroom-shaped rosettes of crystals with flattish tops. The crystals are lustrous, slightly translucent, orange-amber colored, really quite unique and different from the rounded material out of the more common locale (San Pedro Corralitos). And for importance, there were a lot fewer pieces like this found at this locale, so it ranks higher than any comparably sized piece from the Ojuela or Corralitos locales in Mexico - and again, has a different look in any case. From the well-known Tucson collection of 40-year collector, Harold Urish.
