GEMS-058 - Manganotantalite (outstanding stone) - $ 10000 SOLD

thumbnail, 15.78 x 10.88 mm ; 8.35 carats

Manganotantalite (outstanding stone) - Afghanistan
Manganotantalite (outstanding stone) - AfghanistanManganotantalite (outstanding stone) - Afghanistan

This stone for all intents and purposes, is one of the finest facetted Manganotantalites in the world. For years, the only two regions that produced gem grade Manganotantalite were Minas Gerais, Brazil and Alto Ligonha, Mozambique. In recent years, we have seen some spectacular Manganotantalite coming out of Afghanistan, and the color is as rich and vibrant as any other locality. This gem is most definitely the finest cut stone of this material that I've seen from Afghanistan. Because of the density of this material, gems are often quite heavy, even in smaller stones. This stone has an intense blood red color, and there is no hint of brown to be seen, like many of the stones from Brazil and Mozambique. . The stone has a Cut Corner Triangle cut or Shield cut depending on how you view it. The stone is only very very slightly included. I would consider to be a world class gem and in the highest ranks of ultra-rare collector quality gems. This stone is virtually impossible to replace as Afghanistan truly has not produced much in the way of Manganotantalite rough in recent years.

Manganotantalite (twinned) - Lavra de Cori, Bahia, Brazil

An oustanding, dramatic twinned crystal of this rare earth species, showing great lustre AND form...rare in such a crystal. Also, most tantalites from Brazil are flat-topped and just plain brutish looking. This is as elegant as I can imagine a tantalite crystal to be! Note it is nearly pristine with just a few trivial dings, and otherwise it is complete all around. In some lighting, it acquires a surface iridescence, you can see. This is exceptional not only for Brazilian examples of this species, but for ANY locale

Manganotantalite - Santa Maria, Alto Ligonhe, Mozambique

Thumbnail, 1.1 x 0.8 x 0.6 cm A partially GEMMY tantalite is a rare thing indeed, and this locality was famous for them....old specimen, from 30-40 years ago! Minor wear to edges, but still a sharp crystal and with great color.

Tantalite-(Fe) - Linópolis, Divino das Laranjeiras, Doce valley, Minas Gerais, Southeast Region, Brazil

17.2 x 10.5 x 6.4 cm. This monster is a COMPLETE, undamaged, 11-pound crystal (over 4 kilos!). It is fully and perfectly terminated and the fact that such a thing has survived s to me a minor miracle. The crystal is truly complete all around, and to me is a massively important mineral specimen for Brazil or a rare earth element collection.
